1 N ow faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

Ahora bien, tener fe es estar seguro de lo que se espera; es estar convencido de lo que no se ve.

2 F or by this, the elders obtained testimony.

Gracias a ella, nuestros antepasados fueron reconocidos y aprobados.

3 B y faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.

Por la fe entendemos que Dios creó el universo por medio de su palabra, de modo que lo que ahora vemos fue hecho de lo que no se veía.

4 B y faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.

Por la fe, Abel ofreció a Dios un sacrificio más aceptable que el de Caín, y por eso fue reconocido como un hombre justo, y Dios aceptó con agrado sus ofrendas. Y aunque Abel está muerto, todavía habla por medio de su fe.

5 B y faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

Por la fe, Enoc traspuso sin morir el umbral de la muerte, y nunca más se supo de él, porque Dios le hizo cruzar ese umbral; pero antes de cruzarlo, todos reconocieron que él era del agrado de Dios.

6 W ithout faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

Sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios, porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que él existe, y que sabe recompensar a quienes lo buscan.

7 B y faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Por la fe, con mucho temor Noé construyó el arca para salvar a su familia, cuando Dios le advirtió acerca de cosas que aún no se veían. Fue su fe la que condenó al mundo, y por ella fue hecho heredero de la justicia que viene por medio de la fe.

8 B y faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

Por la fe, Abrahán obedeció cuando fue llamado, y salió sin saber a dónde iba, y se dirigió al lugar que iba a recibir como herencia.

9 B y faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.

Por la fe, habitó en la tierra prometida como un extraño en tierra extraña, y vivió en tiendas con Isaac y Jacob, quienes eran coherederos de la misma promesa;

10 F or he looked for the city which has the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

porque esperaba llegar a la ciudad que tiene fundamentos, cuyo arquitecto y constructor es Dios.

11 B y faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.

Por la fe, Sara misma recibió fuerzas para concebir, aunque era estéril, y dio a luz, aun cuando por su edad se le había pasado el tiempo, porque creyó que era fiel quien le había hecho la promesa.

12 T herefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

Por eso también, de un solo hombre, que ya estaba casi muerto, llegó a tener una multitud de descendientes, tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo y tan incontables como la arena que está a la orilla del mar.

13 T hese all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Por la fe, todos ellos murieron sin haber recibido lo que se les había prometido, y sólo llegaron a ver esto a lo lejos; pero lo creyeron y lo saludaron, pues reconocieron que eran extranjeros y peregrinos en esta tierra.

14 F or those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.

Porque los que dicen esto, claramente dan a entender que buscan una patria;

15 I f indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.

pues si hubieran estado pensando en la patria de donde salieron, tiempo tenían para volver.

16 B ut now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Pero ellos anhelaban una patria mejor, es decir, la patria celestial. Por eso Dios no se avergüenza de llamarse su Dios; al contrario, les ha preparado una ciudad.

17 B y faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son;

Por la fe, cuando Abrahán fue puesto a prueba, ofreció a Isaac; y el que había recibido las promesas ofrecía a su único hijo,

18 e ven he to whom it was said, “your offspring will be accounted as from Isaac”;

a pesar de que Dios le había dicho: «Por medio de Isaac te vendrá descendencia».

19 c oncluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.

Y es que Abrahán sabía que Dios tiene poder incluso para levantar a los muertos; y en sentido figurado, de entre los muertos lo volvió a recibir.

20 B y faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.

Por la fe, Isaac bendijo a Jacob y a Esaú acerca de las cosas venideras.

21 B y faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.

Por la fe, cuando Jacob murió, bendijo a cada uno de los hijos de José, y adoró apoyado en la punta de su bastón.

22 B y faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.

Por la fe, cuando José murió, anunció la salida de los hijos de Israel y dio instrucciones en cuanto a qué hacer con sus restos mortales.

23 B y faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

Por la fe, cuando Moisés nació, sus padres lo escondieron durante tres meses, pues al ver que era un niño muy hermoso no tuvieron miedo del decreto del rey.

24 B y faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

Por la fe, cuando Moisés ya era adulto, rehusó llamarse hijo de la hija del faraón,

25 c hoosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;

y prefirió ser maltratado junto con el pueblo de Dios, antes que gozar de los deleites temporales del pecado,

26 a ccounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

pues consideró que sufrir el oprobio de Cristo era una riqueza mayor que los tesoros de los egipcios. Y es que su mirada estaba fija en la recompensa.

27 B y faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Por la fe salió de Egipto, sin temor a la ira del rey, y se mantuvo firme, como si estuviera viendo al Invisible.

28 B y faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.

Por la fe, celebró la pascua y el rociamiento de la sangre, para que el que destruía a los primogénitos no llegara a tocarlos.

29 B y faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.

Por la fe, pasaron por el Mar Rojo como si pisaran tierra seca; y cuando los egipcios intentaron hacer lo mismo, murieron ahogados.

30 B y faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.

Por la fe, cayeron las murallas de Jericó después de rodearlas siete días.

31 B y faith, Rahab the prostitute, didn’t perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.

Por la fe, la ramera Rajab no murió junto con los desobedientes, pues había recibido en paz a los espías.

32 W hat more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets;

¿Y qué más puedo decir? Tiempo me faltaría para hablar de Gedeón, de Barac, de Sansón, de Jefté, de David, así como de Samuel y de los profetas,

33 w ho, through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

que por la fe conquistaron reinos, impartieron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, taparon bocas de leones,

34 q uenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.

apagaron fuegos impetuosos, escaparon del filo de la espada, sacaron fuerzas de flaqueza, llegaron a ser poderosos en batallas y pusieron en fuga a ejércitos extranjeros.

35 W omen received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

Hubo mujeres que por medio de la resurrección recuperaron a sus muertos. Pero otros fueron atormentados, y no aceptaron ser liberados porque esperaban obtener una mejor resurrección.

36 O thers were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.

Otros sufrieron burlas y azotes, y hasta cadenas y cárceles.

37 T hey were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

Fueron apedreados, aserrados, puestos a prueba, muertos a filo de espada; anduvieron de un lado a otro cubiertos de pieles de oveja y de cabra, pobres, angustiados y maltratados.

38 ( of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.

Estos hombres, de los que el mundo no era digno, anduvieron errantes por los desiertos, por los montes, por las cuevas y por las cavernas de la tierra.

39 T hese all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, didn’t receive the promise,

Y aunque por medio de la fe todos ellos fueron reconocidos y aprobados, no recibieron lo prometido.

40 G od having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Todo esto sucedió para que ellos no fueran perfeccionados aparte de nosotros, pues Dios había preparado algo mejor para nosotros.
