1 P aul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Yo, Pablo, siervo de Dios y apóstol de Jesucristo, según la fe de los escogidos de Dios y el conocimiento de la verdad que corresponde a la piedad,

2 I n hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

en la esperanza de la vida eterna, la cual Dios, que no miente, prometió desde antes del principio de los siglos,

3 B ut hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

y a su debido tiempo manifestó su palabra por medio de la predicación que me fue encomendada por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador,

4 T o Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

a Tito, verdadero hijo en nuestra fe común: Recibe gracia, misericordia y paz, de Dios el Padre y del Señor Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador. Requisitos de ancianos y obispos

5 F or this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

Por esto te dejé en Creta, para que corrigieras lo deficiente y establecieras ancianos en cada ciudad, tal y como yo te mandé:

6 I f any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

ancianos irreprensibles, maridos de una sola mujer y con hijos creyentes, que no estén acusados de disolución ni de rebeldía.

7 F or a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

Porque es necesario que el obispo, como administrador de Dios, sea irreprensible, no soberbio ni iracundo, ni afecto al vino, ni pendenciero, ni codicioso de ganancias deshonestas,

8 B ut a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

sino hospitalario, amante de lo bueno, sobrio, justo, santo, dueño de sí mismo,

9 H olding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

apegado a la palabra fiel, tal y como ha sido enseñada, para que también pueda exhortar con sana enseñanza y convencer a los que contradicen.

10 F or there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

Porque aún hay muchos rebeldes, que hablan de vanidades y de engaños, especialmente los de la circuncisión,

11 W hose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

a los cuales es preciso tapar la boca. Éstos trastornan casas enteras, y a cambio de ganancias deshonestas enseñan lo que no conviene.

12 O ne of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Uno de ellos, que es su propio profeta, dijo: «Los cretenses son siempre mentirosos, malas bestias y glotones ociosos.»

13 T his witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

Éste es un testimonio verdadero; así que repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en la fe

14 N ot giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

y no atiendan a fábulas judaicas, ni a mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.

15 U nto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Para los puros, todas las cosas son puras; pero para los corruptos e incrédulos nada es puro, pues hasta su mente y su conciencia están corrompidas;

16 T hey profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

dicen conocer a Dios, pero con los hechos lo niegan, pues son odiosos y rebeldes, reprobables en cuanto a toda buena obra.
