1 A nd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

Por esos días, Augusto César promulgó un edicto en el que ordenaba levantar un censo de todo el mundo.

2 ( And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

Este primer censo se llevó a cabo cuando Quirino era gobernador de Siria,

3 A nd all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

por lo que todos debían ir a su propio pueblo para inscribirse.

4 A nd Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

Como José era descendiente de David y vivía en Nazaret, que era una ciudad de Galilea, tuvo que ir a Belén, la ciudad de David, que estaba en Judea,

5 T o be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

para inscribirse junto con María, que estaba desposada con él y se hallaba encinta.

6 A nd so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

Y mientras ellos se encontraban allí, se cumplió el tiempo de que ella diera a luz,

7 A nd she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

y allí tuvo a su hijo primogénito; y lo envolvió en pañales, y lo acostó en un pesebre, porque no había lugar para ellos en ese albergue. Los ángeles y los pastores

8 A nd there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

En esa misma región había pastores que pasaban la noche en el campo cuidando a sus rebaños.

9 A nd, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Allí un ángel del Señor se les apareció, y el resplandor de la gloria del Señor los envolvió. Ellos se llenaron de temor,

10 A nd the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

pero el ángel les dijo: «No teman, que les traigo una buena noticia, que será para todo el pueblo motivo de mucha alegría.

11 F or unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Hoy, en la ciudad de David, les ha nacido un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor.

12 A nd this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Esto les servirá de señal: Hallarán al niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre.»

13 A nd suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

En ese momento apareció, junto con el ángel, una multitud de las huestes celestiales, que alababan a Dios y decían:

14 G lory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

«¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas! ¡Paz en la tierra a todos los que gozan de su favor!»

15 A nd it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Cuando los ángeles volvieron al cielo, los pastores se dijeron unos a otros: «Vayamos a Belén, y veamos esto que ha sucedido, y que el Señor nos ha dado a conocer.»

16 A nd they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Así que fueron de prisa, y hallaron a María y a José, y el niño estaba acostado en el pesebre.

17 A nd when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

Al ver al niño, contaron lo que se les había dicho acerca de él.

18 A nd all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Todos los que estaban escuchando quedaron asombrados de lo que decían los pastores,

19 B ut Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

pero María guardaba todo esto en su corazón, y meditaba acerca de ello.

20 A nd the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Al volver los pastores, iban alabando y glorificando a Dios por todo lo que habían visto y oído, pues todo había sucedido tal y como se les había dicho. Presentación de Jesús en el templo

21 A nd when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Cuando se cumplieron los ocho días para que el niño fuera circuncidado, le pusieron por nombre JESÚS, que era el nombre que el ángel le había puesto antes de que fuera concebido.

22 A nd when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

Y cuando se cumplieron los días para que, según la ley de Moisés, ellos fueran purificados, llevaron al niño a Jerusalén para presentarlo ante el Señor

23 ( As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

y cumplir con lo que está escrito en la ley del Señor: «Todo primer hijo varón será consagrado al Señor»,

24 A nd to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

y para ofrecer un sacrificio en cumplimiento de la ley del Señor, que pide «un par de tórtolas, o dos palominos».

25 A nd, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

En Jerusalén vivía un hombre justo y piadoso, llamado Simeón, que esperaba la salvación de Israel. El Espíritu Santo reposaba en él

26 A nd it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

y le había revelado que no moriría antes de que viera al Ungido del Señor.

27 A nd he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

Simón fue al templo, guiado por el Espíritu. Y cuando los padres del niño Jesús lo llevaron al templo para cumplir con lo establecido por la ley,

28 T hen took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

él tomó al niño en sus brazos y bendijo a Dios con estas palabras:

29 L ord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

«Señor, ahora despides a este siervo tuyo, y lo despides en paz, de acuerdo a tu palabra.

30 F or mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

Mis ojos han visto ya tu salvación,

31 W hich thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

que has preparado a la vista de todos los pueblos:

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

luz reveladora para las naciones, y gloria para tu pueblo Israel.»

33 A nd Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

José y la madre del niño estaban asombrados de todo lo que de él se decía.

34 A nd Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Simeón los bendijo, y a María, la madre del niño, le dijo: «Tu hijo ha venido para que muchos en Israel caigan o se levanten. Será una señal que muchos rechazarán

35 ( Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

y que pondrá de manifiesto el pensamiento de muchos corazones, aunque a ti te traspasará el alma como una espada.»

36 A nd there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

También estaba allí Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Ana era una profetisa de edad muy avanzada. Desde su virginidad, había vivido siete años de matrimonio,

37 A nd she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

y ahora era una viuda de ochenta y cuatro años. Nunca se apartaba del templo, sino que de día y de noche rendía culto a Dios con ayunos y oraciones.

38 A nd she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

En ese mismo instante Ana se presentó, y dio gracias a Dios y habló del niño a todos los que esperaban la redención de Jerusalén. El regreso a Nazaret

39 A nd when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

Después de cumplir con todo lo prescrito en la ley del Señor, volvieron a Nazaret, que era su ciudad en Galilea.

40 A nd the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

El niño crecía y se fortalecía, y se llenaba de sabiduría, y la gracia de Dios reposaba en él. El niño Jesús en el templo

41 N ow his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

Todos los años, los padres de Jesús iban a Jerusalén durante la fiesta de la pascua,

42 A nd when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

y siguiendo su costumbre, cuando Jesús cumplió doce años fueron a Jerusalén para la fiesta.

43 A nd when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

Cuando la fiesta terminó y emprendieron el regreso, sucedió que el niño Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén sin que sus padres lo notaran.

44 B ut they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

Como ellos pensaban que el niño estaba entre los otros viajeros, hicieron un día de camino y, mientras tanto, lo buscaban entre los parientes y conocidos.

45 A nd when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

Como no lo hallaron, volvieron a Jerusalén para buscarlo allí.

46 A nd it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

Tres días después lo hallaron en el templo, sentado en medio de los doctores de la ley, a quienes escuchaba y les hacía preguntas.

47 A nd all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

Todos los que lo oían se asombraban de su inteligencia y de sus respuestas.

48 A nd when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Cuando sus padres lo encontraron, se sorprendieron; y su madre le dijo: «Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho esto? ¡Con qué angustia tu padre y yo te hemos estado buscando!»

49 A nd he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

Él les respondió: «¿Y por qué me buscaban? ¿Acaso no sabían que es necesario que me ocupe de los negocios de mi Padre?»

50 A nd they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

Ellos no comprendieron lo que Jesús les dijo,

51 A nd he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

aunque se fue con ellos a Nazaret y vivió sujeto a ellos. Por su parte, su madre guardaba todo esto en su corazón.

52 A nd Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Y Jesús siguió creciendo en sabiduría y en estatura, y en gracia para con Dios y con los hombres.
