1 A nd straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

En cuanto amaneció, y luego de reunirse los principales sacerdotes, los ancianos, los escribas y todo el tribunal para ponerse de acuerdo, ataron a Jesús y se lo llevaron a Pilato.

2 A nd Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto them, Thou sayest it.

Éste le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» Y Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo dices.»

3 A nd the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

Los principales sacerdotes lo acusaban de muchas cosas,

4 A nd Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.

así que Pilato volvió a preguntarle: «¿No vas a responder? ¡Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan!»

5 B ut Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

Pero Jesús ni aun así respondió, lo que sorprendió mucho a Pilato. Jesús sentenciado a muerte

6 N ow at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

En el día de la fiesta Pilato acostumbraba poner en libertad a un preso, el que la gente quisiera.

7 A nd there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

Había uno que se llamaba Barrabás, que estaba preso con sus compañeros de motín porque en una revuelta habían cometido un homicidio.

8 A nd the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.

Cuando la multitud se aproximó, comenzó a pedirle a Pilato que hiciera lo que acostumbraba hacer.

9 B ut Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

Pilato les preguntó: «¿Quieren que ponga en libertad al Rey de los judíos?»

10 F or he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

Y es que Pilato sabía que los principales sacerdotes lo habían entregado por envidia.

11 B ut the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

Pero los principales sacerdotes incitaron a la multitud para que Pilato soltara más bien a Barrabás.

12 A nd Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

Pilato les preguntó: «¿Y qué quieren que haga con el que ustedes llaman Rey de los judíos?»

13 A nd they cried out again, Crucify him.

Y ellos volvieron a gritar: «¡Crucifícalo!»

14 T hen Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

Pilato les decía: «¿Pues qué crimen ha cometido?» Pero ellos gritaban más todavía: «¡Crucifícalo!»

15 A nd so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Pilato optó por complacer al pueblo y puso en libertad a Barrabás; luego mandó que azotaran a Jesús, y lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.

16 A nd the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.

Los soldados lo llevaron al interior del atrio, es decir, al pretorio, y llamaron a toda la compañía.

17 A nd they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

Lo vistieron de púrpura, le colocaron una corona tejida de espinas,

18 A nd began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

y comenzaron a saludarlo: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!»

19 A nd they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

Lo golpeaban en la cabeza con una caña, y lo escupían, y doblaban las rodillas para hacerle reverencias.

20 A nd when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron la ropa de púrpura, lo vistieron con sus propios vestidos, y lo sacaron de allí para crucificarlo. Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

21 A nd they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

A uno que volvía del campo y que pasaba por allí lo obligaron a llevar la cruz. Ese hombre se llamaba Simón de Cirene, y era padre de Alejandro y de Rufo.

22 A nd they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

Llevaron a Jesús a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera».

23 A nd they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

Le dieron a beber vino mezclado con mirra, pero él no lo tomó.

24 A nd when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

Después de crucificarlo, se repartieron sus vestidos y los sortearon para ver qué le tocaría a cada uno de ellos.

25 A nd it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

Cuando lo crucificaron eran las nueve de la mañana.

26 A nd the superscription of his accusation was written over, The King Of The Jews.

Como razón de su condena pusieron este epígrafe: «EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS».

27 A nd with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

Con él crucificaron también a dos ladrones, uno a su derecha y el otro a su izquierda.

28 A nd the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

29 A nd they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

Los que pasaban lo insultaban, y mientras meneaban la cabeza decían: «Oye, tú, que derribas el templo de Dios y en tres días lo reedificas,

30 S ave thyself, and come down from the cross.

¡sálvate a ti mismo y desciende de la cruz!»

31 L ikewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

Así también se burlaban de él los principales sacerdotes, y se sumaban a los escribas para decir: «¡Salvó a otros, pero a sí mismo no puede salvarse!

32 L et Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

¡Que baje ahora de la cruz el Cristo, el Rey de Israel, para que podamos ver y creer!» Y también le hacían burla los que estaban crucificados con él.

33 A nd when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

Desde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra,

34 A nd at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

y a las tres de la tarde Jesús clamó a gran voz: «Eloi, Eloi, ¿lama sabactani?», que significa «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?»

35 A nd some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

Al oírlo, algunos de los que estaban allí decían: «Escuchen, está llamando a Elías.»

36 A nd one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

Uno de ellos corrió a empapar en vinagre una esponja, la puso en una caña, y le dio a beber, al tiempo que decía: «Déjenlo, veamos si Elías viene a bajarlo.»

37 A nd Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

Pero Jesús lanzó un fuerte grito y murió.

38 A nd the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

En ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo,

39 A nd when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

y el centurión que estaba frente a él, al verlo morir así, dijo: «En verdad, este hombre era Hijo de Dios.»

40 T here were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

Algunas mujeres estaban allí, mirando de lejos. Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María, la que era madre de Jacobo el menor y de José, y Salomé.

41 ( Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

Ellas habían seguido y atendido a Jesús cuando él estaba en Galilea. Pero había también otras muchas mujeres, que habían ido con él a Jerusalén. Jesús es sepultado

42 A nd now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

Al caer la tarde del día de la preparación, es decir, la víspera del día de reposo,

43 J oseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

José de Arimatea fue y con mucha osadía se presentó ante Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Este José era un miembro importante del tribunal, y también esperaba el reino de Dios.

44 A nd Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

Pilato se sorprendió al saber que Jesús ya había muerto, así que mandó llamar al centurión y le preguntó si, en efecto, Jesús ya había muerto.

45 A nd when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

Luego de que el centurión le confirmó la noticia, Pilato entregó a José el cuerpo de Jesús.

46 A nd he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

José fue y bajó de la cruz el cuerpo de Jesús, lo envolvió en una sábana que había comprado, y lo puso en un sepulcro que estaba cavado en una peña. Luego, hizo rodar una piedra para sellar la entrada del sepulcro.

47 A nd Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

Mientras tanto, María Magdalena y María la madre de José miraban dónde ponían el cuerpo.
