1 A nd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

4 A nd Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

Or anche Giuseppe uscí dalla città di Nazaret della Galilea, per recarsi in Giudea nella città di Davide, chiamata Betlemme, perché egli era della casa e della famiglia di Davide,

5 T o be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

per farsi registrare con Maria, sua moglie, che aveva sposato e che era incinta.

6 A nd so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

Cosí mentre erano là, giunse per lei il tempo del parto.

7 A nd she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Ed ella diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, e lo fasciò e lo pose a giacere in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.

8 A nd there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Ora in quella stessa regione c'erano dei pastori che dimoravano all'aperto nei campi, e di notte facevano la guardia al loro gregge.

9 A nd, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Ed ecco, un angelo del Signore si presentò loro e la gloria del Signore risplendette intorno a loro, ed essi furono presi da grande paura.

10 A nd the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

Ma l'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, perché vi annunzio una grande gioia che tutto il popolo avrà;

11 F or unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

poiché oggi nella città di Davide è nato per voi un Salvatore, che è Cristo, il Signore

12 A nd this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

E questo vi servirà di segno: Voi troverete un bambino fasciato, coricato in una mangiatoia».

13 A nd suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

E ad un tratto si uní all'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste che lodava Dio, dicendo:

14 G lory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

«Gloria a Dio nei luoghi altissimi, e pace in terra agli uomini, su cui si posa il suo favore».

15 A nd it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

E avvenne che, quando gli angeli si allontanarono da loro per ritornare in cielo, i pastori dissero tra loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme, per vedere ciò che è avvenuto e che il Signore ci ha fatto conoscere».

16 A nd they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Andarono quindi in fretta e trovarono Maria, Giuseppe e il bambino, che giaceva in una mangiatoia.

17 A nd when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

Dopo averlo visto, divulgarono quanto era stato loro detto a proposito di quel bambino.

18 A nd all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

E tutti coloro che li udirono si meravigliarono delle cose raccontate loro dai pastori.

19 B ut Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Maria custodiva tutte queste parole, meditandole in cuor.

20 A nd the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

E i pastori se ne ritornarono, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutte le cose che avevano udito e visto, come era stato loro detto.

21 A nd when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

E quando furono trascorsi gli otto giorni dopo i quali egli doveva essere circonciso, gli fu posto nome Gesú, il nome dato dall'angelo prima che fosse concepito nel grembo.

22 A nd when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

Quando poi furono compiuti i giorni della purificazione di lei secondo la legge di Mosé, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore

23 ( As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

come è scritto nella legge del Signore: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà chiamato santo al Signore»,

24 A nd to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

e per offrire in sacrificio, come è detto nella legge del Signore, un paio di tortore o due giovani colombi.

25 A nd, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

Or ecco, vi era a Gerusalemme un uomo chiamato Simeone; quest'uomo era giusto e pio e aspettava la consolazione d'Israele; e lo Spirito Santo era su di lui.

26 A nd it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

E gli era stato divinamente rivelato dallo Spirito Santo, che non sarebbe morto prima di aver visto il Cristo del Signore.

27 A nd he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

Egli dunque, mosso dallo Spirito, venne nel tempio, e, come i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesú, per fare a suo riguardo quanto prescriveva la legge,

28 T hen took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

egli lo prese tra le braccia e benedisse Dio, dicendo:

29 L ord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

«Ora, Signore, lascia che il tuo servo muoia in pace secondo la tua parola,

30 F or mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

perché i miei occhi hanno visto la tua salvezza,

31 W hich thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

che tu hai preparato davanti a tutti i popoli;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

luce per illuminare le genti e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».

33 A nd Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

E Giuseppe e la madre del bambino si meravigliavano delle cose che si dicevano di lui.

34 A nd Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Poi Simeone li benedisse e disse a Maria sua madre: «Ecco, costui è posto per la caduta e per l'innalzamento di molti in Israele e per essere segno di contraddizione,

35 ( Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

e a te stessa una spada trafiggerà l'anima, affinché siano svelati i pensieri di molti cuori».

36 A nd there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

Vi era anche Anna, una profetessa, figlia di Fanuel, della tribú di Aser, la quale era molto avanzata in età, avendo vissuto dopo la sua verginità sette anni con il marito.

37 A nd she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Ella era vedova e, sebbene avesse ormai ottantaquattro anni, non si allontanava mai dal tempio, servendo Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere.

38 A nd she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

Sopraggiunta ella pure in quel momento, lodava il Signore e parlava di quel bambino a tutti coloro che aspettavano la redenzione in Gerusalemme.

39 A nd when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

Ora, quando ebbero compiuto tutto quello che riguardava l'osservanza della legge del Signore, ritornarono in Galilea nella loro città di Nazaret.

40 A nd the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Intanto il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito, essendo ripieno di sapienza; e la grazia di Dio era su di lui.

41 N ow his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

Or i suoi genitori si recavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua.

42 A nd when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

E, quando egli compí dodici anni, essi salirono a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa.

43 A nd when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

Terminati quei giorni, mentre essi ritornavano, il fanciullo Gesú rimase in Gerusalemme; ma Giuseppe e sua madre non lo sapevano.

44 B ut they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

Supponendo che egli fosse nella comitiva, essi fecero una giornata di cammino, poi si misero a cercarlo fra i parenti e i conoscenti;

45 A nd when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

e, non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme in cerca di lui.

46 A nd it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

E avvenne che, tre giorni dopo, lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai dottori, intento ad ascoltarli e a far loro domande.

47 A nd all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

E tutti quelli che l'udivano, stupivano della sua intelligenza e delle sue risposte.

48 A nd when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

E, quando essi lo videro, rimasero stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre ed io, angosciati, ti cercavamo!».

49 A nd he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

Ma egli disse loro: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?».

50 A nd they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

Ma essi non compresero le parole che aveva detto loro.

51 A nd he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

Ed egli scese con loro, tornò a Nazaret e stava loro sottomesso. E sua madre serbava tutte queste parole nel suo cuore.

52 A nd Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

E Gesú cresceva in sapienza, in statura e in grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.
