Il servo che agisce saggiamente dominerà sul figlio che fa disonore e riceverà una parte di eredità con i fratelli.

3 T he fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.

Il crogiolo è per l'argento e la fornace per l'oro, ma chi prova i cuori è l'Eterno.

4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

Il malvagio presta attenzione alle labbra inique, il bugiardo dà ascolto alla lingua perversa.

5 W hoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

Chi schernisce il povero oltraggia Colui che l'ha fatto; chi si rallegra della sventura altrui non rimarrà impunito.

6 C hildren's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

I figli dei figli sono la corona dei vecchi, e la gloria dei figli sono i loro padri.

7 E xcellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

Allo stolto non si addice un buon parlare, ancor meno delle labbra bugiarde a un principe.

8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

Un regalo è una pietra preziosa agli occhi di chi lo possiede; dovunque si volge, egli riesce.

9 H e that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

Chi copre una colpa si procura amore, ma chi vi ritorna sopra divide gli amici migliori.

10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

Un rimprovero penetra piú profondamente nell'uomo assennato, che cento colpi nello stolto.

11 A n evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

Il malvagio non cerca altro che ribellione, perciò gli sarà mandato contro un messaggero crudele.

12 L et a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

E' meglio incontrare un'orsa derubata dei suoi piccoli, che uno stolto nella sua follia.

13 W hoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

Il male non si allontanerà dalla casa di chi rende il male per il bene.

14 T he beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

Iniziare una contesa è come dar la stura alle acque; perciò tronca la lite prima che si inasprisca.

15 H e that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.

Chi assolve il colpevole e chi condanna il giusto sono entrambi un abominio per l'Eterno.

16 W herefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

A che serve il denaro in mano allo stolto? Forse a comprare sapienza, quando egli non ha alcun senno?

17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

L'amico ama in ogni tempo, ma un fratello è nato per l'avversità.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

L'uomo privo di senno dà la mano come garanzia e s'impegna per il suo vicino.

19 H e loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

Chi ama il peccato ama le liti, e chi innalza la sua porta cerca la rovina.

20 H e that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

L'uomo disonesto di cuore non trova alcun bene, e chi ha la lingua perversa cade nei guai.

21 H e that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

Chi genera uno stolto ne avrà afflizione, e il padre di uno stolto non potrà rallegrarsi.

22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Un cuore allegro è una buona medicina, ma uno spirito abbattuto inaridisce le ossa.

23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

L'empio accetta regali di nascosto per pervertire le vie della giustizia.

24 W isdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

La sapienza sta davanti a chi ha intendimento, ma gli occhi dello stolto vagano fino agli estremi confini della terra.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

Il figlio stolto è causa di dolore per suo padre e amarezza per colei che l'ha partorito.

26 A lso to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

Non è bene condannare il giusto né colpire i principi per la loro rettitudine.

27 H e that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Chi modera le sue parole possiede conoscenza, e chi ha lo spirito calmo è un uomo prudente.

28 E ven a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Anche lo stolto quando tace, è ritenuto saggio e, quando tiene chiuse le labbra, è considerato intelligente.
