1 N ow these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;

Queste sono le parole della lettera che il profeta Geremia mandò da Gerusalemme, al residuo degli anziani, in cattività, ai sacerdoti, ai profeti e a tutto il popolo che Nebukadnetsar aveva condotto in cattività da Gerusalemme a Babilonia.

2 ( After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)

(Questo avvenne dopo che il re Jekoniah, la regina, gli eunuchi, i principi di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, gli artigiani e i fabbri furono usciti da Gerusalemme).

3 B y the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

La lettera fu recata per mezzo di Elasah, figlio di Shafan, e di Ghemariah, figlio di Hilkiah, che Sedekia, re di Giuda, aveva mandato a Babilonia da Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia. Essa diceva:

4 T hus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;

«Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele, a tutti i deportati che io ho fatto condurre in cattività da Gerusalemme a Babilonia:

5 B uild ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

Costruite case e abitatele, piantate giardini e mangiate i loro frutti.

6 T ake ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

Prendete mogli e generate figli e figlie; prendete mogli per i vostri figli e date le vostre figlie a marito, perché generino figli e figlie e perché là moltiplichiate e non diminuiate.

7 A nd seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Cercate il bene della città dove vi ho fatti condurre in cattività e pregate l'Eterno per essa, perché dal suo benessere dipende il vostro benessere.

8 F or thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

Cosí dice infatti l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: Non vi traggano in inganno i vostri profeti e i vostri indovini che sono in mezzo a voi, e non date retta ai sogni che fate.

9 F or they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.

Poiché vi profetizzano falsamente nel mio nome; io non li ho mandati», dice l'Eterno.

10 F or thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

«Cosí dice l'Eterno: Quando saranno compiuti settant'anni per Babilonia, io vi visiterò e manderò ad effetto per voi la mia buona parola, facendovi ritornare in questo luogo.

11 F or I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Poiché io conosco i pensieri che ho per voi», dice l'Eterno, «pensieri di pace e non di male, per darvi un futuro e una speranza.

12 T hen shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Mi invocherete e verrete a pregarmi, e io vi esaudirò.

13 A nd ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Mi cercherete e mi troverete, perché mi cercherete con tutto il vostro cuore.

14 A nd I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

Io mi farò trovare da voi», dice l'Eterno, «e vi farò tornare dalla vostra cattività; vi raccoglierò da tutte le nazioni e da tutti i luoghi dove vi ho dispersi», dice l'Eterno; «e vi ricondurrò nel luogo da cui vi ho fatto condurre in cattività.

15 B ecause ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

Poiché dite: "L'Eterno ci ha suscitato dei profeti in Babilonia",

16 K now that thus saith the Lord of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

cosí dice l'Eterno riguardo al re che siede sul trono di Davide, riguardo a tutto il popolo che abita in questa città, ai vostri fratelli che non sono andati con voi in cattività»;

17 T hus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

sí, cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti: «Ecco, io manderò contro di loro la spada, la fame e la peste, e li renderò come fichi nauseanti che non si possono mangiare, tanto sono cattivi.

18 A nd I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

Li inseguirò con la spada, con la fame e con la peste; li farò essere maltrattati in tutti i regni della terra ed essere una maledizione, un oggetto di stupore, uno scherno e un obbrobrio in mezzo a tutte le nazioni dove li ho dispersi,

19 B ecause they have not hearkened to my words, saith the Lord, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the Lord.

perché non hanno ascoltato le mie parole», dice l'Eterno, «che io ho mandato loro per mezzo dei miei servi, i profeti, con urgenza ed insistenza; ma voi non avete dato ascolto», dice l'Eterno.

20 H ear ye therefore the word of the Lord, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:

«Ascoltate dunque la parola dell'Eterno, o voi tutti, che io ho mandato in cattività da Gerusalemme a Babilonia!

21 T hus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele, riguardo ad Achab, figlio di Kolaiah, e riguardo a Sedekia, figlio di Maaseiah, che vi profetizzano menzogna nel mio nome: Ecco, io li darò in mano di Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, ed egli li ucciderà sotto i vostri occhi.

22 A nd of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The Lord make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

Da essi si trarrà una formula di maledizione che sarà usata da tutti quelli di Giuda che sono in cattività in Babilonia, e si dirà: "L'Eterno ti tratti come Sedekia e come Achab, che il re di Babilonia ha fatto arrostire nel fuoco!"

23 B ecause they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the Lord.

Poiché essi hanno fatto cose ignominiose in Israele, hanno commesso adulterio con le mogli del loro prossimo, e hanno pronunciato in mio nome parole di menzogna, che non avevo loro comandato. Io stesso lo so e ne sono testimone, dice l'Eterno.

24 T hus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

Parlerai pure a Scemaiah il Nehelamita, dicendo:

25 T hus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: Tu hai mandato in tuo nome lettere a tutto il popolo che è in Gerusalemme, al sacerdote Sofonia, figlio di Maaseiah, e a tutti i sacerdoti, dicendo:

26 T he Lord hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the Lord, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.

"L'Eterno ti ha costituito sacerdote al posto del sacerdote Jehoiada, perché vi siano sovrintendenti nella casa dell'Eterno per sorvegliare ogni uomo pazzo che fa il profeta, perché tu lo metta in prigione e in catene".

27 N ow therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?

E ora perché non hai rimproverato Geremia di Anathoth che fa il profeta tra di voi?

28 F or therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Infatti egli ci ha mandato a dire in Babilonia: "La cattività sarà lunga; costruite case e abitatele, piantate giardini e mangiate i loro frutti"».

29 A nd Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

Il sacerdote Sofonia lesse questa lettera in presenza del profeta Geremia.

30 T hen came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,

Allora la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Geremia, dicendo:

31 S end to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the Lord concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

«Manda a dire a tutti quelli che sono in cattività: Cosí parla l'Eterno riguardo a Scemaiah il Nehelamita: Poiché Scemaiah vi ha profetizzato, anche se io non l'ho mandato, e vi ha fatto confidare nella menzogna,

32 T herefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the Lord; because he hath taught rebellion against the Lord.

cosí dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io punirò Scemaiah il Nehelamita e la sua discendenza; non avrà nessuno dei suoi discendenti che abiterà in mezzo a questo popolo, e non vedrà il bene che io farò al mio popolo dice l'Eterno, perché ha parlato di ribellione, contro l'Eterno».
