1 A nd Job answered and said,

Allora Giobbe rispose e disse:

2 N o doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

«Senza dubbio voi siete gente saggia, e la sapienza morirà con voi.

3 B ut I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

Ma ho anch'io intendimento come voi, e non sono da meno di voi; inoltre chi ignora cose come queste?

4 I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.

Sono diventato lo zimbello dei miei amici; io, a cui Dio rispondeva, quando lo invocavo; il giusto, l'integro è messo in ridicolo.

5 H e that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.

Una lampada, disprezzata nei pensieri di quelli che vivono negli agi, è preparata per coloro i cui piedi vacillano.

6 T he tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

Sono invece tranquille le tende dei ladroni, e sono al sicuro quelli che provocano Dio e quelli che fanno della propria forza un dio.

7 B ut ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:

Ma interroga ora le bestie e ti istruiranno, gli uccelli del cielo e te lo diranno.

8 O r speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

o parla alla terra, ed essa ti istruirà, e i pesci del mare te lo racconteranno.

9 W ho knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this?

Fra tutte queste creature chi non sa che la mano dell'Eterno ha fatto questo?

10 I n whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

Egli ha nelle sue mani la vita di ogni cosa vivente e lo spirito di ogni essere umano.

11 D oth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?

L'orecchio non esamina forse le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi?

12 W ith the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

Nei vecchi si trova la sapienza, e lunghezza di giorni conferisce intendimento.

13 W ith him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.

Ma in lui risiedono la sapienza e la forza, a lui appartengono il consiglio e l'intendimento.

14 B ehold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

Ecco, se egli distrugge, nessuno può ricostruire; se imprigiona qualcuno, nessuno gli può aprire.

15 B ehold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

Se trattiene le acque, tutto inaridisce; se le lascia andare, sconvolgono la terra.

16 W ith him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

Egli possiede forza e sapienza; da lui dipendono chi è ingannato e chi inganna.

17 H e leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

Egli fa camminare scalzi i consiglieri, rende stolti i giudici.

18 H e looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.

Scioglie i legami imposti dai re e cinge i loro lombi, con una cintura.

19 H e leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.

Fa camminare scalzi i sacerdoti e rovescia i potenti.

20 H e removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.

Toglie la parola a quelli in cui si pone fiducia e priva di intendimento i vecchi.

21 H e poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.

Versa il disprezzo sui nobili, e allenta la cintura ai forti.

22 H e discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

Palesa le cose profonde nascoste nelle tenebre, e porta alla luce l'ombra di morte.

23 H e increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.

Rende grandi le nazioni e poi le distrugge, estende le nazioni e poi le porta in esilio.

24 H e taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

Toglie il senno ai capi della terra e li fa vagare in solitudini senza strade.

25 T hey grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

Brancolano nelle tenebre senza luce, e li fa barcollare come ubriachi».
