1 S urely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.

2 I ron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.

Il ferro viene estratto dal suolo, e la pietra fusa dà il rame.

3 H e setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.

L'uomo pone fine alle tenebre ed esplora i piú profondi recessi in cerca di pietre sepolte nell'oscurità e nell'ombra di morte.

4 T he flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.

Perfora un pozzo lontano dall'abitato, in posti dimenticati dai pedoni; sono sospesi e oscillano lontani dagli uomini.

5 A s for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.

Quanto alla terra da essa viene il pane, ma di sotto è sconvolta come dal fuoco.

6 T he stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.

Le sue pietre sono la dimora di zaffiri e contiene polvere d'oro.

7 T here is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:

L'uccello rapace non ne conosce il sentiero né l'ha mai scorto l'occhio del falco.

8 T he lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.

Le bestie feroci non l'hanno battuto e il leone non vi è mai passato.

9 H e putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.

L'uomo mette la mano sulla selce e rovescia dalle radici le montagne.

10 H e cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.

Scava gallerie nelle rocce, e il suo occhio vede tutto ciò che è prezioso.

11 H e bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.

Ostruisce corsi d'acqua perché non scorrano, e porta alla luce le cose nascoste.

12 B ut where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?

Ma dove si può trovare la sapienza, e dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?

13 M an knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.

L'uomo non ne conosce il valore e non si trova sulla terra dei viventi.

14 T he depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.

L'abisso dice: "Non è in me"; il mare dice: "Non sta presso di me"

15 I t cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.

Non la si ottiene in cambio d'oro raffinato né la si compra a peso d'argento.

16 I t cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

Non la si acquista con l'oro di Ofir, con l'onice prezioso o con lo zaffiro.

17 T he gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.

L'oro e il cristallo non la possono uguagliare né si scambia per vasi d'oro fino.

18 N o mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.

Il corallo e il cristallo non meritano neppure di essere nominati; il valore della sapienza val piú delle perle.

19 T he topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

Il topazio di Etiopia non la può uguagliare e non può essere valutata con oro puro.

20 W hence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?

Ma allora da dove viene la sapienza e dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?

21 S eeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.

Essa è nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, è celata agli uccelli del cielo.

22 D estruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.

Abaddon e la morte dicono: "Ne abbiamo sentito parlare con i nostri orecchi"

23 G od understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.

DIO solo ne conosce la via, egli solo sa dove si trovi,

24 F or he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;

perché egli osserva le estremità della terra e vede tutto ciò che è sotto i cieli.

25 T o make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.

Quando stabilí il peso del vento e assegnò alle acque una misura,

26 W hen he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:

quando fece una legge per la pioggia e una via al lampo dei tuoni,

27 T hen did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.

allora la vide e la rivelò, la stabili e anche la investigò.

28 A nd unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

E disse all'uomo: "Ecco, temere il Signore, questo è sapienza, e fuggire il male è intelligenza"».
