1 N ow a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Era allora malato un certo Lazzaro di Betania, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta, sua sorella.

2 ( It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Or Maria era quella che unse di olio profumato il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; e suo fratello Lazzaro era malato.

3 T herefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Le sorelle dunque mandarono a dire a Gesú: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato».

4 W hen Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

E Gesú, udito ciò, disse: «Questa malattia non è a morte, ma per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il Figlio di Dio sia glorificato».

5 N ow Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Or Gesú amava Marta, sua sorella e Lazzaro.

6 W hen he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Come dunque ebbe inteso che Lazzaro era malato, si trattenne ancora due giorni nel luogo dove egli era.

7 T hen after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

Poi disse ai suoi discepoli: «Torniamo di nuovo in Giudea».

8 H is disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

I discepoli gli dissero: «Maestro, i Giudei poco fa cercavano di lapidarti e tu vai di nuovo là?».

9 J esus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Gesú rispose: «Non vi sono forse dodici ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo

10 B ut if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

ma se uno cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui».

11 T hese things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

Dopo aver detto queste cose, soggiunse: «Il nostro amico Lazzaro si è addormentato, ma io vado a svegliarlo».

12 T hen said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Allora i suoi discepoli dissero: «Signore, se dorme si riprenderà».

13 H owbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Or Gesú aveva parlato della sua morte, essi invece pensavano che avesse parlato del riposo del sonno.

14 T hen said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Allora Gesú disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto.

15 A nd I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

Ed io mi rallegro per voi di non essere stato là, affinché crediate; ma andiamo da lui».

16 T hen said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Allora Tommaso, detto Didimo, disse ai condiscepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui».

17 T hen when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Arrivato dunque Gesú, trovò che Lazzaro era già da quattro giorni nel sepolcro.

18 N ow Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Or Betania distava da Gerusalemme circa quindici stadi.

19 A nd many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

E molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria per consolarle del loro fratello.

20 T hen Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Marta dunque, come udí che Gesú veniva, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa.

21 T hen said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Marta disse a Gesú: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto,

22 B ut I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

ma anche adesso so che tutto quello che chiederai a Dio, Dio te lo darà».

23 J esus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Gesú le disse: «Tuo fratello risusciterà».

24 M artha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Marta gli disse: «Lo so che risusciterà nella risurrezione all'ultimo giorno».

25 J esus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Gesú le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chiunque crede in me, anche se dovesse morire, vivrà.

26 A nd whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

E chiunque vive e crede in me, non morrà mai in eterno. Credi tu questo?».

27 S he saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Ella gli disse: «Sí, Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio che doveva venire nel mondo».

28 A nd when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

E, detto questo, andò a chiamare di nascosto Maria, sua sorella, dicendo: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama».

29 A s soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Appena udito ciò, ella si alzò in fretta e venne da lui.

30 N ow Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Or Gesú non era ancora giunto nel villaggio, ma si trovava nel luogo dove Marta lo aveva incontrato.

31 T he Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Perciò i Giudei che erano in casa con lei per consolarla, vedendo Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, dicendo: «Ella se ne va al sepolcro per piangere la».

32 T hen when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Appena Maria giunse al luogo in cui si trovava Gesú, e lo vide, si gettò ai suoi piedi, dicendogli: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto».

33 W hen Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

Gesú allora, come vide che lei e i Giudei che erano venuti con lei piangevano, fremé nello spirito e si turbò,

34 A nd said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

e disse: «Dove l'avete posto?». Essi gli dissero: «Signore, vieni e vedi».

35 J esus wept.

Gesú pianse.

36 T hen said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

Dissero allora i Giudei: «Vedi come l'amava!».

37 A nd some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Non poteva costui che aprí gli occhi al cieco, far sí che questi non morisse?».

38 J esus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Perciò Gesú, fremendo di nuovo in se stesso, venne al sepolcro; or questo era una grotta davanti alla quale era stata posta una pietra.

39 J esus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Gesú disse: «Togliete via la pietra!». Marta, la sorella del morto, gli disse: «Signore, egli puzza già, poiché è morto da quattro giorni».

40 J esus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Gesú le disse: «Non ti ho detto che se credi, vedrai la gloria di Dio?».

41 T hen they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Essi dunque tolsero la pietra dal luogo dove giaceva il morto. Gesú allora alzati in alto gli occhi, disse: «Padre, ti ringrazio che mi hai esaudito.

42 A nd I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

lo sapevo bene che tu mi esaudisci sempre, ma ho detto ciò per la folla che sta attorno, affinché credano che tu mi hai mandato».

43 A nd when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

E, detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!».

44 A nd he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Allora il morto uscí, con le mani e i piedi legati con fasce e con la faccia avvolta in un asciugatoio. Gesú disse loro: «Scioglietelo e lasciatelo andare».

45 T hen many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Allora molti dei Giudei, che erano venuti da Maria e avevano visto tutto quello che Gesú aveva fatto, credettero in lui.

46 B ut some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Ma alcuni di loro andarono dai farisei e riferirono loro quanto Gesú aveva fatto.

47 T hen gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Allora i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei riunirono a il sinedrio e dicevano: «Che facciamo? Quest'uomo fa molti segni.

48 I f we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Se lo lasciamo andare avanti cosí, tutti crederanno in lui, verranno i Romani e distruggeranno il nostro luogo e la nostra nazione».

49 A nd one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Ma uno di loro, Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, disse loro: «Voi non capite nulla;

50 N or consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

e non considerate che conviene per noi che un sol uomo muoia per il popolo e non perisca tutta la nazione».

51 A nd this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Or egli non disse questo da se stesso; ma, essendo sommo sacerdote in quell'anno, profetizzò che Gesú doveva morire per la nazione,

52 A nd not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

e non solo per la nazione, ma anche per raccogliere in uno i figli di Dio dispersi.

53 T hen from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Da quel giorno dunque deliberarono di farlo morire.

54 J esus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Perciò Gesú non si aggirava piú pubblicamente tra i Giudei, ma si ritirò nella regione vicina al deserto, in una città detta Efraim, e lí rimase con i suoi discepoli.

55 A nd the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Or la Pasqua dei Giudei era vicina e molti di quella regione salirono a Gerusalemme prima della Pasqua per purificarsi.

56 T hen sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Cercavano dunque Gesú e, stando nel tempio, dicevano fra di loro: «Che ve ne pare? Non verrà egli alla festa?».

57 N ow both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

Or i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei avevano dato ordine che, se qualcuno sapeva dove egli era, lo segnalasse affinché potessero prenderlo.
