1 N ow a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Un oarecare Lazăr din Betania, satul Mariei şi al Martei, sora ei, era bolnav.

2 ( It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

Maria era cea care L-a uns pe Domnul cu parfum şi I-a şters picioarele cu părul ei; fratele ei, Lazăr, era bolnav.

3 T herefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Surorile au trimis la Isus să-I spună: „Doamne, iată că cel pe care-l iubeşti este bolnav!“

4 W hen Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Dar Isus, când a auzit, a zis: „Boala aceasta nu este spre moarte, ci spre slava lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca Fiul lui Dumnezeu să fie slăvit prin ea.“

5 N ow Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Isus îi iubea pe Marta, pe sora ei şi pe Lazăr.

6 W hen he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Totuşi, când a auzit că Lazăr este bolnav, a mai rămas în locul unde era încă două zile.

7 T hen after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

După aceea le-a zis ucenicilor: – Să ne ducem din nou în Iudeea!

8 H is disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Ucenicii I-au răspuns: – Rabbi, până acum iudeii căutau să arunce cu pietre în Tine şi Tu Te duci din nou acolo?!

9 J esus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Isus le-a răspuns: – Nu sunt douăsprezece ore de lumină în zi? Dacă cineva umblă ziua, nu se împiedică, pentru că vede lumina acestei lumi,

10 B ut if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

dar dacă cineva umblă noaptea, se împiedică, pentru că lumina nu este în el.

11 T hese things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

După ce a spus acestea, le-a zis: – Lazăr, prietenul nostru, doarme, dar Mă duc să-l trezesc.

12 T hen said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Ucenicii I-au zis: – Doamne, dacă doarme, atunci se va face bine!

13 H owbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Isus vorbise însă despre moartea Lui, dar ei credeau că vorbeşte despre somnul obişnuit.

14 T hen said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Atunci Isus le-a spus deschis: – Lazăr a murit.

15 A nd I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

Şi mă bucur pentru voi că n-am fost acolo, ca să credeţi. Dar să mergem la el!

16 T hen said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Atunci Toma, căruia i se zicea „Didimus“, le-a zis celorlalţi ucenici: „Să mergem şi noi să murim împreună cu El!“ Isus, învierea şi viaţa

17 T hen when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Când a ajuns Isus, a aflat că Lazăr era deja de patru zile în mormânt.

18 N ow Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Betania era aproape de Ierusalim, cam la cincisprezece stadii,

19 A nd many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

şi mulţi dintre iudei veniseră la Marta şi la Maria ca să le consoleze pentru moartea fratelui lor.

20 T hen Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Când a auzit Marta că vine Isus, s-a dus să-L întâmpine. Maria însă şedea în casă.

21 T hen said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Marta I-a zis lui Isus: – Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n-ar fi murit fratele meu!

22 B ut I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

Dar şi acum ştiu că orice-I vei cere lui Dumnezeu, Dumnezeu Îţi va da!

23 J esus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Isus i-a zis: – Fratele tău va învia!

24 M artha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Marta I-a răspuns: – Ştiu că va învia la învierea din ziua de pe urmă.

25 J esus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Isus i-a zis: – Eu sunt învierea şi viaţa. Cel ce crede în Mine va trăi chiar dacă moare.

26 A nd whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Şi oricine trăieşte şi crede în Mine nu va muri niciodată. Crezi lucrul acesta?

27 S he saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Ea I-a răspuns: – Da, Doamne, cred că Tu eşti Cristosul, Fiul lui Dumnezeu, Cel Care urma să vină în lume!

28 A nd when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

Şi spunând aceasta, s-a dus şi a chemat-o pe Maria, sora ei, zicându-i în şoaptă: „A sosit Învăţătorul şi te cheamă!“

29 A s soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Cum a auzit aceasta, Maria s-a ridicat repede şi s-a dus la El.

30 N ow Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Isus încă nu intrase în sat, ci era tot în locul unde-L întâmpinase Marta.

31 T he Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Iudeii care erau cu ea în casă şi o consolau, când au văzut că Maria se ridică repede şi iese, au urmat-o, crezând că se duce la mormânt, ca să plângă acolo.

32 T hen when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Maria, când a ajuns unde era Isus şi L-a văzut, a căzut la picioarele Lui şi I-a zis: „Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n-ar fi murit fratele meu!“

33 W hen Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

Isus, când a văzut-o plângând, pe ea şi pe iudeii care veniseră cu ea, s-a înfiorat în duh şi s-a tulburat.

34 A nd said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

A întrebat: – Unde l-aţi pus? Ei I-au răspuns: – Doamne, vino şi vezi!

35 J esus wept.

Isus a început să plângă.

36 T hen said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

Atunci iudeii au zis: „Iată cât de mult îl iubea!“

37 A nd some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Însă unii dintre ei ziceau: „El, Care a deschis ochii orbului, nu putea face ca nici omul acesta să nu moară?“ Învierea lui Lazăr

38 J esus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Isus s-a înfiorat din nou în Sine şi S-a dus la mormânt, care era o peşteră la intrarea căreia fusese pusă o piatră.

39 J esus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Isus a zis: „Daţi la o parte piatra!“ Marta, sora celui mort, I-a zis: – Doamne, deja miroase urât, căci este mort de patru zile!

40 J esus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Isus i-a zis: – Nu ţi-am spus că, dacă crezi, vei vedea slava lui Dumnezeu?

41 T hen they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Au dat deci piatra la o parte. Isus Şi-a ridicat ochii şi a zis: „Tată, Îţi mulţumesc că M-ai ascultat!

42 A nd I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Ştiam că întotdeauna Mă asculţi, dar am spus aceasta din pricina mulţimii care stă împrejur, pentru ca ei să creadă că Tu M-ai trimis.“

43 A nd when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

După ce a spus acestea, a strigat cu glas tare: „Lazăr, vino afară!“

44 A nd he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Mortul a ieşit cu picioarele şi mâinile legate cu fâşii de pânză şi cu faţa înfăşurată într-un ştergar. Isus le-a zis: „Dezlegaţi-l şi lăsaţi-l să meargă!“ Uneltire împotriva lui Isus

45 T hen many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Mulţi dintre iudeii care au venit la Maria şi care au văzut ce a făcut Isus, au crezut în El.

46 B ut some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Dar unii dintre ei s-au dus la farisei şi le-au spus ce făcuse Isus.

47 T hen gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Conducătorii preoţilor şi fariseii au adunat Sinedriul şi au zis: – Ce să facem? Omul Acesta face multe semne.

48 I f we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Dacă-L lăsăm să continue aşa, toţi vor crede în El şi vor veni romanii şi ne vor nimici atât locul, cât şi neamul!

49 A nd one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Însă unul dintre ei, Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela, le-a zis: – Voi nu ştiţi nimic!

50 N or consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

Nu vă daţi seama că este mai de folos pentru voi să moară un singur om pentru popor şi să nu piară întregul neam?!

51 A nd this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Dar nu a spus lucrul acesta de la el, ci, fiind mare preot în anul acela, a profeţit că Isus urma să moară pentru neam

52 A nd not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

şi nu numai pentru neam, ci şi ca să-i adune laolaltă pe copiii lui Dumnezeu cei risipiţi.

53 T hen from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Aşadar, din ziua aceea au plănuit să-L omoare.

54 J esus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

Ca urmare, Isus nu mai umbla pe faţă printre iudei, ci a plecat de acolo în regiunea din apropierea pustiei, într-o cetate numită Efraim, şi a rămas acolo cu ucenicii.

55 A nd the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Paştele iudeilor era aproape şi mulţi din ţinutul acela se suiau la Ierusalim înainte de Paşte ca să se curăţească.

56 T hen sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Ei Îl căutau pe Isus şi-şi spuneau unii altora, în timp ce stăteau în Templu: „Ce credeţi? Nu va veni la sărbătoare?“

57 N ow both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

Dar conducătorii preoţilor şi fariseii dăduseră poruncă ca, dacă cineva ştie unde este, să le dea de ştire, astfel încât să-L poată aresta.
