1 A nd the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Domnul i-a zis lui Samuel: – Până când îl vei mai plânge pe Saul, din moment ce Eu l-am respins, ca să nu mai domnească peste Israel? Umple-ţi cornul cu untdelemn şi du-te acolo unde te trimit: la Işai, betleemitul, pentru că pe unul din fiii săi Mi l-am ales ca rege.

2 A nd Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.

Dar Samuel I-a zis: – Cum aş putea să plec? Saul va auzi lucrul acesta şi mă va omorî. Domnul i-a răspuns: – Să iei o juncană cu tine şi să zici: „Am venit să aduc Domnului o jertfă.“

3 A nd call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

Invită la aducerea jertfei şi pe Işai, iar eu îţi voi arăta ce trebuie să faci. Vei unge pentru Mine pe acela pe care ţi-l voi arăta.

4 A nd Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

Samuel a făcut aşa cum îi spusese Domnul şi a venit la Betleem. Cei din sfatul bătrânilor cetăţii i-au ieşit în întâmpinare tremurând de spaimă. L-au întrebat: – Vii cu pace?

5 A nd he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

Iar el le-a răspuns: – Da, cu pace. Vin ca să aduc o jertfă Domnului. Sfinţiţi-vă şi veniţi cu mine la aducerea jertfei. Samuel l-a sfinţit pe Işai şi pe fiii săi şi i-a invitat la aducerea jertfei.

6 A nd it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord 's anointed is before him.

Când aceştia au sosit şi Samuel l-a văzut pe Eliab s-a gândit: „Cu siguranţă unsul Domnului se află aici, înaintea Lui.“

7 B ut the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Însă Domnul i-a zis: „Nu te uita la înfăţişarea sau la înălţimea staturii lui, pentru că l-am respins, căci Domnul nu se uită la ceea ce se uită omul. Omul se uită la înfăţişare, pe când Domnul se uită la inimă.“

8 T hen Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

Atunci Işai l-a chemat pe Abinadab şi l-a prezentat lui Samuel. El i-a zis: – Nici pe acesta nu l-a ales Domnul.

9 T hen Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

Işai l-a prezentat apoi pe Şama, dar Samuel a zis: – Nici pe acesta nu l-a ales Domnul.

10 A gain, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.

Aşa i-a prezentat Işai lui Samuel pe şapte din fiii săi, însă Samuel i-a zis lui Işai: – Domnul nu i-a ales nici pe aceştia.

11 A nd Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

Apoi a mai adăugat: – Aceştia sunt toţi fiii pe care îi ai? – A mai rămas cel mai tânăr dintre ei, i-a răspuns Işai. Dar acesta este cu oile la păscut. – Trimite după el fiindcă nu ne vom aşeza până nu vine aici, i-a zis Samuel

12 A nd he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

Işai a trimis după el şi a fost adus. Tânărul avea părul roşcat, ochii frumoşi şi era chipeş. Domnul i-a zis lui Samuel: – Ridică-te şi unge-l, pentru că el este.

13 T hen Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Samuel a luat cornul cu untdelemn şi l-a uns în mijlocul fraţilor lui, iar Duhul Domnului a venit cu putere peste David, începând din ziua aceea. După toate acestea, Samuel s-a întors la Rama. David, la curtea lui Saul

14 B ut the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

Duhul Domnului S-a îndepărtat de la Saul, astfel că acesta a început să fie chinuit de un duh rău care venea de la Domnul.

15 A nd Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

Slujitorii lui Saul i-au zis: – Iată că un duh rău trimis de Dumnezeu te chinuie.

16 L et our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

Stăpâne, porunceşte slujitorilor tăi, care stau înaintea ta, să caute un om care ştie să cânte la liră. Atunci când duhul cel rău trimis de Dumnezeu va veni peste tine, el va cânta cu mâna lui şi tu te vei simţi mai bine.

17 A nd Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

Saul le-a spus slujitorilor săi: – Găsiţi-mi un om care ştie să cânte bine şi aduceţi-l la mine.

18 T hen answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.

Atunci unul dintre tinerii slujitori a zis: – L-am văzut pe unul dintre fiii lui Işai din Betleem, care este iscusit la cântat. Este un bărbat viteaz şi războinic, priceput la vorbire şi cu o înfăţişare plăcută, iar Domnul este cu el.

19 W herefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

Saul a trimis mesageri la Işai, spunându-i: – Trimite-mi pe David, fiul tău, cel care păstoreşte oile.

20 A nd Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

Işai a luat un măgar încărcat cu pâine, un burduf de vin şi un ied pe care le-a trimis lui Saul prin fiul său David.

21 A nd David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

David a venit la Saul şi s-a înfăţişat înaintea lui. Lui Saul i-a plăcut foarte mult de David şi l-a luat să-i poarte armele.

22 A nd Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

A trimis la Işai să i se spună: – Dă-i voie lui David să rămână în slujba mea, pentru că a găsit bunăvoinţă în ochii mei.

23 A nd it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Ori de câte ori venea duhul trimis de Dumnezeu asupra lui Saul, David lua lira şi cânta. Atunci Saul avea parte de alinare, se simţea mai bine, iar duhul cel rău pleca de la el.
