1 A nd the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Cuvântul Domnului a venit la mine şi mi-a zis:

2 S on of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;

„Fiul omului, rosteşte o pildă, spune-i o parabolă Casei lui Israel!

3 A nd say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:

Spune-i: «Aşa vorbeşte Stăpânul Domn: ‘Un vultur măreţ, cu aripi mari, cu pene lungi, cu penaj bogat şi divers colorat, a venit în Liban şi, prinzând vârful unui cedru,

4 H e cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.

i-a rupt cea mai de sus rămurea, a dus-o într-o ţară de negustori şi a sădit-o într-o cetate de negoţ.

5 H e took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.

Apoi a luat sămânţă din ţară şi a semănat-o într-un pământ roditor. A pus-o lângă o apă mare şi a sădit-o ca pe o salcie.

6 A nd it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

Sămânţa a încolţit şi s-a făcut o viţă întinsă, dar nu prea înaltă; ramurile îi erau întoarse spre vultur, iar rădăcinile erau sub el. Astfel ea a ajuns o viţă care a dat lăstari şi a făcut mlădiţe.

7 T here was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation.

Mai era însă un alt vultur măreţ, cu aripi mari şi cu penaj bogat. Şi iată că viţa aceasta şi-a îndreptat cu lăcomie rădăcinile spre el şi şi-a întins mlădiţele spre el ca să i se dea mai multă apă decât pe terasa unde fusese sădită,

8 I t was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

cu toate că fusese plantată pe un teren bun şi lângă o apă mare, în aşa fel încât să facă ramuri, să dea rod şi să devină o viţă minunată.’

9 S ay thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.

Prin urmare, spune-le că aşa vorbeşte Stăpânul Domn: ‘Oare-i va merge bine? Oare nu-i vor fi smulse rădăcinile şi nu-i vor fi tăiate roadele?! I se vor veşteji toate frunzele, i se va usca butucul şi nu va fi nevoie nici de braţ puternic, nici de oameni mulţi pentru ca rădăcinile să-i fie îndepărtate!

10 Y ea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.

Iată că este sădită! Îi va merge bine oare? Când vântul de răsărit va sufla împotriva ei, oare nu se va usca ea de tot? Oare nu se va usca chiar pe terasa unde a încolţit?’»“

11 M oreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Cuvântul Domnului a venit la mine şi mi-a zis:

12 S ay now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;

„Întreabă această Casă răzvrătită: «Nu ştiţi ce înseamnă aceste lucruri?» Apoi spune-le: «Iată, împăratul Babilonului a venit la Ierusalim, i-a luat regele şi prinţii şi i-a dus cu el în Babilon.

13 A nd hath taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:

Apoi a luat un membru al casei regale şi a încheiat un legământ cu el, punându-l sub jurământ. Totodată i-a luat şi pe conducătorii ţării,

14 T hat the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand.

ca să slăbească regatul, aşa încât să nu se mai ridice, ci să păzească legământul, rămânându-i loial.

15 B ut he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

Dar regele s-a răzvrătit împotriva lui şi a trimis un sol în Egipt, ca să-i dea cai şi un mare număr de oameni. Va reuşi el oare? Cel ce a făcut aceste lucruri va scăpa el oare? Să rupă el legământul şi să scape?

16 A s I live, saith the Lord God, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

Viu sunt Eu, zice Stăpânul Domn, că regele va muri în Babilon, acolo unde locuieşte împăratul care l-a pus să domnească, al cărui jurământ l-a dispreţuit şi al cărui legământ l-a rupt.

17 N either shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:

Oştirea cea mare şi poporul cel numeros al lui Faraon nu va putea face nimic în război, când se vor înălţa rampe de asalt şi se vor zidi întărituri pentru nimicirea multor vieţi.

18 S eeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.

Pentru că a dispreţuit jurământul, rupând legământul, pentru că, deşi a încheiat un legământ, a făcut totuşi toate aceste lucruri, nu va scăpa!

19 T herefore thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head.

De aceea, viu sunt Eu, zice Stăpânul Domn, că voi întoarce împotriva lui jurământul Meu pe care l-a dispreţuit şi legământul Meu pe care l-a rupt.

20 A nd I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.

Îmi voi arunca asupra lui plasa şi va fi prins în laţul Meu; îl voi duce în Babilon şi îl voi judeca acolo pentru necredincioşia arătată faţă de Mine.

21 A nd all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the Lord have spoken it.

Toţi fugarii din trupele lui vor cădea loviţi de sabie, iar pe cei ce vor rămâne îi voi împrăştia în toate vânturile. Şi veţi şti astfel că Eu, Domnul, am vorbit.»

22 T hus saith the Lord God; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:

Aşa vorbeşte Stăpânul Domn: «Eu Însumi voi rupe o rămurea din vârful măreţ al unui cedru şi o voi sădi. Din vârful ramurilor lui voi rupe o mlădiţă firavă pe care Eu Însumi o voi planta pe un munte înalt şi măreţ.

23 I n the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.

O voi planta pe muntele cel mai înalt al lui Israel. Acesteia îi vor creşte ramuri, va da roade şi va deveni un cedru maiestuos. Păsări de tot felul se vor aşeza în el şi la umbra ramurilor lui vor locui tot felul de înaripate.

24 A nd all the trees of the field shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the Lord have spoken and have done it.

Şi toţi copacii câmpiei vor şti că Eu, Domnul, pot să smeresc un copac înalt şi pot să înalţ un copac neînsemnat, pot să usuc un copac plin de viaţă şi pot face să înflorească un copac uscat.» Eu, Domnul, am vorbit şi aşa voi face.“
