1 A nd it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

Când Samuel a îmbătrânit, i-a pus pe fiii săi drept judecători peste Israel.

2 N ow the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

Numele fiului său întâi născut era Ioel, iar numele celui de-al doilea era Abia. Ei erau judecători la Beer-Şeba.

3 A nd his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

Fiii săi însă nu călcau pe urmele lui, ci umblau după câştig, luau mită şi perverteau dreptatea.

4 T hen all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

Toţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel s-au adunat şi au venit la Samuel, la Rama,

5 A nd said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

spunându-i: „Tu eşti bătrân, iar fiii tăi nu-ţi calcă pe urme. Acum dar, pune un rege care să domnească peste noi, aşa cum au toate neamurile!“

6 B ut the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

Samuel a văzut ca un lucru rău faptul că ei au cerut un rege să domnească peste ei şi s-a rugat Domnului.

7 A nd the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Domnul însă i-a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă glasul poporului în tot ce îţi va spune, pentru că nu pe tine te leapădă, ci pe Mine, ca să nu mai domnesc peste ei.

8 A ccording to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

Aşa au făcut din ziua în care i-am scos din Egipt şi până astăzi: M-au părăsit şi au slujit altor dumnezei. Ei fac aşa şi cu tine.

9 N ow therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

Ascultă-le deci glasul, însă avertizează-i şi fă-le cunoscut care vor fi drepturile regelui care va domni peste ei.“ Drepturile regelui

10 A nd Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.

Samuel a spus poporului care a cerut de la el un rege toate cuvintele Domnului.

11 A nd he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

Le-a spus: – Acestea vor fi drepturile regelui care va domni peste voi: îi va lua pe fiii voştri şi îi va folosi la carele lui; ei vor fi călăreţii lui şi vor alerga înaintea carelor sale.

12 A nd he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

Îi va folosi pentru sine drept căpetenii peste mii şi căpetenii peste cincizeci; îi va folosi pentru a-i ara ogorul şi pentru a-i culege recolta, pentru a-i face echipament de război şi echipament pentru carele lui.

13 A nd he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

Le va lua pe fiicele voastre pentru a-i face miresme, pentru a-i găti mâncare şi pentru a-i coace.

14 A nd he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

Va lua partea cea mai bună din ogoarele voastre, din viile voastre şi din smochinii voştri şi o va da slujitorilor săi.

15 A nd he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

Va lua a zecea parte din rodul seminţelor voastre şi din viile voastre şi o va da căpeteniilor şi slujitorilor săi.

16 A nd he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

Îi va lua pe slujitorii voştri, pe slujitoarele voastre, cele mai bune dintre vitele şi măgarii voştri şi îi va folosi pentru lucrările lui.

17 H e will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

Îi veţi da a zecea parte din turmele voastre şi îi veţi fi slujitori.

18 A nd ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.

În ziua aceea, veţi striga să fiţi izbăviţi dinaintea regelui pe care vi l-aţi ales, dar Domnul nu vă va răspunde în ziua aceea.

19 N evertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

Dar poporul nu a vrut să asculte de glasul lui Samuel şi a zis: – Nu vrem să facem cum zici tu, ci să fie un rege peste noi!

20 T hat we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

În felul acesta vom fi la fel ca toate neamurile: regele nostru va domni peste noi şi ne va conduce în războaiele noastre.

21 A nd Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.

Samuel, după ce a auzit toate cuvintele poporului, le-a spus în auzul Domnului.

22 A nd the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

Atunci Domnul i-a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă de glasul lor şi pune un rege peste ei.“ Samuel le-a zis israeliţilor: – Întoarceţi-vă fiecare în cetatea lui!
