1 B ut it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

După un timp, pe vremea seceratului grâului, Samson şi-a vizitat soţia, având la el un ied. El a zis: – Vreau să intru în odaia soţiei mele! Dar tatăl ei nu l-a lăsat să intre,

2 A nd her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

ci i-a zis: – M-am gândit atunci şi mi-am zis că o urăşti foarte mult, aşa că am dat-o prietenului tău. Dar sora ei mai tânără este mai frumoasă decât ea! Te rog, ia-o în locul ei!

3 A nd Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.

– De data aceasta voi fi nevinovat faţă de filisteni când le voi face rău! le-a răspuns Samson părinţilor ei.

4 A nd Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

Apoi Samson s-a dus şi a prins trei sute de vulpi; a luat nişte torţe, a legat vulpile coadă de coadă şi a pus câte o torţă la mijloc, între cele două cozi.

5 A nd when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.

A aprins torţele şi a dat drumul vulpilor în holdele filistenilor. În acest fel au ars atât căpiţele, cât şi holdele şi livezile de măslini.

6 T hen the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

Atunci filistenii au întrebat: – Cine a făcut fapta aceasta? Li s-a răspuns: – Samson, ginerele timnitului, pentru că acesta i-a luat soţia şi i-a dat-o prietenului lui! Filistenii s-au dus şi au ars-o pe ea şi pe tatăl ei.

7 A nd Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

Samson le-a zis: „Pentru că aţi făcut o asemenea faptă, nu voi înceta să vă fac rău până nu mă voi răzbuna pe voi!“

8 A nd he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

Şi a început să-i lovească la picioare şi la şolduri; a fost un mare măcel. Apoi el s-a dus şi a locuit în grota din Stânca lui Etam.

9 T hen the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

După aceea, filistenii au venit şi şi-au aşezat tabăra în Iuda. Ei s-au răsfirat până la Lehi.

10 A nd the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

Bărbaţii lui Iuda i-au întrebat: – De ce aţi venit împotriva noastră? Ei le-au răspuns: – Am venit ca să-l legăm pe Samson şi să-i facem aşa cum ne-a făcut şi el nouă!

11 T hen three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

Atunci trei mii de bărbaţi ai lui Iuda s-au dus la grota din Stânca lui Etam şi l-au întrebat pe Samson: – N-ai ştiut că filistenii stăpânesc peste noi? De ce ne-ai făcut una ca asta? – După cum mi-au făcut ei mie, aşa le-am făcut şi eu! le-a răspuns el.

12 A nd they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

Ei i-au zis: – Am venit ca să te legăm şi să te dăm în mâinile filistenilor! – Juraţi-mi că nu-mi veţi lua viaţa! le-a răspuns Samson.

13 A nd they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

Ei i-au răspuns: – Doar te vom lega şi te vom da în mâinile lor! De ucis însă nu te vom ucide! L-au legat cu două funii noi şi l-au scos din stâncă.

14 A nd when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

Când au ajuns la Lehi, filistenii au venit spre el strigând. Atunci Duhul Domnului a venit de îndată peste el şi funiile pe care le avea la braţe s-au făcut ca pânza arsă în foc, iar legăturile i-au căzut de la mâini.

15 A nd he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

A găsit o falcă de măgar, care nu era uscată încă, a luat-o în mână şi a ucis cu ea o mie de oameni.

16 A nd Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

Apoi Samson a zis: „Cu o falcă de măgar, o grămadă, două grămezi; cu o falcă de măgar am ucis o mie de oameni!“

17 A nd it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramathlehi.

După ce a terminat de vorbit, a aruncat falca din mână. Locul acela a fost numit Ramat-Lehi.

18 A nd he was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?

Fiindu-i foarte sete, L-a chemat pe Domnul şi I-a zis: „Tu ai dat prin mâna robului tău această mare izbăvire şi acum să mor de sete şi să cad în mâinile celor necircumcişi?“

19 B ut God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.

Dumnezeu a despicat groapa din Lehi şi din ea a ieşit apă. După ce a băut, Samson şi-a revenit şi s-a înviorat. De aceea au numit acel loc En-Hakkore, el aflându-se şi astăzi în Lehi.

20 A nd he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Samson a judecat Israelul timp de douăzeci de ani, pe vremea domniei filistene.
