1 A nd David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

David a fugit din Naiot, din Rama, a venit la Ionatan şi l-a întrebat: – Ce am făcut? Care este nelegiuirea mea şi cu ce am păcătuit împotriva tatălui tău de caută să-mi ia viaţa?

2 A nd he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

Ionatan i-a răspuns: – Nici vorbă! Nu vei muri! Tatăl meu nu face nici un lucru, nici mare, nici mic, fără să mi-l dezvăluie. Pentru ce ar ascunde tatăl meu tocmai lucrul acesta de mine? Nu poate fi adevărat.

3 A nd David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

Dar David a jurat din nou, zicând: – Cu siguranţă că tatăl tău a ştiut că am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine şi s-a gândit: „Să nu ştie Ionatan lucrul acesta căci s-ar întrista.“ Însă, cu adevărat, viu este Domnul şi viu este sufletul tău că între mine şi moarte nu mai este decât un pas.

4 T hen said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

– Voi face pentru tine tot ceea ce doreşti, i-a spus Ionatan lui David.

5 A nd David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

– Iată, mâine va fi lună nouă şi ar trebui să stau la masă împreună cu regele, i-a zis David. Dă-mi voie însă să plec şi să mă ascund în câmp până în seara zilei a treia.

6 I f thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

Dacă tatăl tău va observa lipsa mea, să-i spui: „David m-a rugat să-i dau voie să dea o fugă până la Betleem, cetatea sa, deoarece acolo va fi adusă jertfa anuală pentru tot clanul.“

7 I f he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

Dacă va accepta, atunci va fi pace pentru slujitorul tău. Însă dacă se va aprinde de mânie atunci să ştii că a hotărât să-mi facă rău.

8 T herefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

În ceea ce te priveşte, arată bunătate faţă de slujitorul tău, fiindcă ai făcut cu el un legământ înaintea Domnului. Iar dacă se găseşte vreo nelegiuire în mine, omoară-mă tu însuţi! Pentru ce să mă mai aduci înaintea tatălui tău?

9 A nd Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

– Niciodată! i-a zis Ionatan. Dacă aş fi ştiut că tatăl meu a hotărât să-ţi facă rău, oare nu ţi-aş fi spus?

10 T hen said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

– Cine îmi va da de ştire dacă tatăl tău îţi va răspunde cu asprime? l-a întrebat David pe Ionatan.

11 A nd Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

Ionatan i-a răspuns: – Vino, să ieşim în câmp. Au ieşit amândoi în câmp

12 A nd Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;

şi acolo Ionatan i-a spus lui David: – Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, este martor că voi iscodi pe tatăl meu mâine şi poimâine cam pe la ceasul acesta. Dacă are gânduri bune pentru tine îţi voi da de ştire.

13 T he Lord do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

Domnul să se poarte cu Ionatan cu toată asprimea dacă tatăl meu va dori să-ţi facă rău şi eu nu-ţi voi dezvălui lucrul acesta şi nu te voi lăsa să pleci în siguranţă. Domnul să fie cu tine aşa cum a fost şi cu tatăl meu.

14 A nd thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not:

Dacă voi mai trăi, să arăţi faţă de mine o îndurare ca cea a lui Dumnezeu, aşa încât să nu fiu ucis

15 B ut also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

şi să nu-ţi îndepărtezi niciodată bunătatea faţă de familia mea, atunci când Domnul va şterge de pe faţa pământului pe fiecare din duşmanii lui David.

16 S o Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies.

Astfel a încheiat Ionatan legământ cu familia lui David, spunând: „ Domnul să ceară socoteală duşmanilor lui David!“

17 A nd Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

Ionatan l-a pus pe David să-şi reînnoiască jurământul din pricina dragostei pe care o nutrea pentru el, pentru că-l iubea aşa cum îşi iubea sufletul lui.

18 T hen Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

Apoi i-a zis: „Mâine este lună nouă şi lipsa ta va fi observată, pentru că locul tău va fi gol.

19 A nd when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

Poimâine să cobori repede, să te duci la locul în care te-ai ascuns prima oară şi să aştepţi lângă stânca Ezel.

20 A nd I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

Eu voi trage trei săgeţi spre ea ca şi când aş trage la ţintă.

21 A nd, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the Lord liveth.

Apoi voi trimite băiatul, poruncindu-i să caute săgeţile. Dacă îi voi spune: «Iată, săgeţile sunt dincoace de tine. Adu-le încoace!» atunci să vii pentru că, viu este Domnul, te afli în siguranţă. Nu este nici un pericol.

22 B ut if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away.

Dacă însă îi voi spune băiatului: «Iată, săgeţile sunt dincolo de tine», atunci să pleci pentru că Domnul te trimite.

23 A nd as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.

Iar cu privire la ceea ce am vorbit noi, Domnul este martor între mine şi tine pe vecie.“

24 S o David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

David s-a ascuns în câmp. Când a început luna nouă, regele s-a aşezat la masă să mănânce.

25 A nd the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

Regele s-a aşezat pe locul său obişnuit, lângă perete, avându-l pe Ionatan în faţa sa, iar pe Abner lângă el, în timp ce locul lui David era gol.

26 N evertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

Saul n-a spus nimic în acea zi, pentru că se gândea că s-a întâmplat ceva cu David. Îşi spunea: „El nu este curat, cu siguranţă nu este curat.“

27 A nd it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

În ziua următoare, a doua zi a lunii noi, locul lui David era tot gol. Atunci Saul l-a întrebat pe fiul său Ionatan: – De ce nu a venit fiul lui Işai nici ieri şi nici astăzi la masă?

28 A nd Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

Ionatan i-a răspuns: – David mi-a cerut voie să se ducă la Betleem.

29 A nd he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.

El mi-a spus: „Dă-mi voie, te rog, să merg acasă fiindcă clanul nostru aduce o jertfă în cetate, iar fratele meu mi-a poruncit să fiu acolo. Fii bun, dă-mi voie, te rog, să merg şi să-mi văd fraţii!“ De aceea nu a venit la masa regelui.

30 T hen Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

Saul s-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Ionatan şi i-a spus: – Bastard răzvrătit ce eşti! Crezi că nu ştiu că ţi-ai ales ca prieten pe fiul lui Işai, spre ruşinea ta şi a mamei tale care te-a născut ?

31 F or as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

Atâta timp cât fiul lui Işai trăieşte pe acest pământ, nici tu şi nici regatul tău nu veţi fi în siguranţă. Trimite deci şi adu-l la mine pentru că trebuie să moară.

32 A nd Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

Dar Ionatan i-a răspuns tatălui său, Saul: – Pentru ce să fie dat la moarte? Ce a făcut?

33 A nd Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

Atunci Saul a aruncat suliţa spre el ca să-l lovească. Astfel, Ionatan a înţeles că tatăl său avea de gând să-l ucidă pe David.

34 S o Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

S-a ridicat de la masă arzând de mânie şi în acea zi, a doua a lunii noi, nu a mâncat nimic pentru că era întristat din pricina lui David, căci tatăl său l-a umilit.

35 A nd it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

În dimineaţa următoare, Ionatan a ieşit în câmp pentru întâlnirea cu David. Împreună cu el era un băieţaş.

36 A nd he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

El i-a spus băieţaşului: „Aleargă de găseşte săgeţile pe care le-am tras.“ Băieţaşul a alergat, iar Ionatan a tras o săgeată dincolo de el.

37 A nd when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

Când băieţaşul a sosit la locul în care căzuse săgeata trasă de Ionatan, acesta a strigat după el: – Nu-i aşa că săgeata e dincolo de tine?

38 A nd Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

Ionatan a strigat după el: – Iute! Grăbeşte-te! Nu te opri! Băieţaşul a strâns săgeţile şi s-a întors la stăpânul său.

39 B ut the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

Acesta nu înţelegea nimic; doar Ionatan şi David înţelegeau ce se întâmpla.

40 A nd Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

Ionatan i-a dat băieţaşului armele sale, spunându-i: – Du-te şi du-le în cetate!

41 A nd as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

După ce a plecat băiatul, David s-a ridicat din partea de sud a stâncii, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi s-a închinat de trei ori. Apoi s-au sărutat şi au plâns împreună, dar David a plâns mai mult.

42 A nd Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

Ionatan i-a zis lui David: – Mergi în pace! Fie cum am jurat amândoi în Numele Domnului când am zis: „ Domnul să fie între mine şi tine şi între urmaşii mei şi urmaşii tăi pe vecie.“ Apoi David s-a ridicat şi a plecat, iar Ionatan s-a întors în cetate.
