1 N ow the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

În acea vreme, filistenii şi-au strâns trupele pentru război la Soco, în Iuda, aşezându-şi tabăra la Efes-Damim, care se află între Soco şi Azeka.

2 A nd Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

Saul împreună cu bărbaţii lui Israel s-au strâns şi şi-au aşezat tabăra în valea Ela. După aceea s-au aşezat în linie de bătaie împotriva filistenilor.

3 A nd the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

Filistenii stăteau pe un deal, iar Israel stătea pe un altul, între ei aflându-se o vale.

4 A nd there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Din tabăra filistenilor a ieşit un luptător al cărui nume era Goliat. Era din Gat şi avea o înălţime de şase coţi şi o palmă.

5 A nd he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

Pe cap avea un coif de bronz şi era îmbrăcat cu o platoşă din zale de bronz în greutate de cinci mii de şecheli.

6 A nd he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

Nişte apărători din bronz îi acopereau picioarele, iar pe spate îi atârna o lance.

7 A nd the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

Lemnul suliţei lui era ca sulul unui ţesător, iar vârful ei era de şase sute de şecheli de fier. Cel ce-i ducea scutul mergea înaintea lui.

8 A nd he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

Goliat s-a oprit şi a strigat trupelor lui Israel aşezate în linie de bătaie: „De ce aţi ieşit şi v-aţi aliniat pentru luptă? Oare nu sunt eu un filistean, iar voi slujitorii lui Saul? Alegeţi pentru voi un bărbat şi trimiteţi-l la mine.

9 I f he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

Dacă va fi în stare să lupte cu mine şi să mă ucidă, atunci noi vom deveni supuşii voştri. Dacă însă eu voi fi mai puternic decât el şi-l voi ucide, atunci voi veţi deveni supuşii noştri şi ne veţi sluji.“

10 A nd the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

Filisteanul a continuat: „Îmi bat joc astăzi de trupele lui Israel! Daţi-mi un bărbat care să se lupte cu mine!“

11 W hen Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

Când au auzit Saul şi întregul Israel acele cuvinte rostite de filistean s-au înspăimântat şi le-a fost foarte frică.

12 N ow David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

David era fiul acelui efratit din Betleemul lui Iuda numit Işai, care avea opt fii. Pe vremea lui Saul, Işai era bătrân, înaintat în vârstă.

13 A nd the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

Cei trei fii mai mari ai lui l-au urmat pe Saul la război. Numele celui dintâi născut era Eliab, numele celui de-al doilea era Abinadab, iar al celui de-al treilea – Şama,

14 A nd David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

David fiind mezinul. Cei trei fii mai mari l-au urmat pe Saul la război,

15 B ut David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

în timp ce David pleca şi se întorcea de la Saul pentru a paşte turma tatălui său, la Betleem.

16 A nd the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

Deci filisteanul a ieşit înaintea lui Israel, făcând lucrul acesta timp de patruzeci de zile, atât dimineaţa, cât şi seara.

17 A nd Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;

Într-una din zile, Işai i-a spus fiului său David: – Ia pentru fraţii tăi efa aceasta de grâne prăjite şi aceste zece pâini şi du-le repede în tabără.

18 A nd carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

Ia şi aceste zece bucăţi de brânză şi du-le căpeteniei peste mia lor. Vezi cum le merge fraţilor tăi şi adu-mi veşti de la ei.

19 N ow Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Ei se află împreună cu Saul şi cu ceilalţi bărbaţi ai lui Israel în valea Ela, unde se luptă cu filistenii.

20 A nd David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

David s-a trezit dis-de-dimineaţă, a lăsat oile în grija unui paznic, a luat cu el tot ce i-a poruncit Işai şi a plecat. A ajuns în tabără tocmai când oştirea se alinia în poziţie de luptă, scoţând strigăte de război.

21 F or Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

Israel şi filistenii s-au aliniat în poziţii de luptă, faţă în faţă.

22 A nd David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

David şi-a lăsat lucrurile în grija celui ce păzea bagajele şi a fugit la poziţiile de luptă. Cum a ajuns şi-a întrebat fraţii de sănătate.

23 A nd as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

În timp ce stăteau ei de vorbă, din rândurile filistenilor a ieşit luptătorul Goliat din Gat. Acesta a rostit aceleaşi cuvinte ca mai înainte, iar David le-a auzit.

24 A nd all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

Când l-au văzut pe filistean, toţi israeliţii au fugit dinaintea lui foarte înspăimântaţi,

25 A nd the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

zicând: – L-aţi văzut pe acel bărbat înaintând? A ieşit ca să batjocorească pe Israel. Pe cel care-l va ucide, regele îl va răsplăti cu mari bogăţii, îi va da pe fiica sa de soţie şi-i va scuti neamul de dări în Israel.

26 A nd David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

David i-a întrebat pe luptătorii care se aflau lângă el: – Ce i se va face celui care-l va ucide pe acest filistean şi va ridica astfel batjocura de peste Israel? Cine este acest filistean, acest necircumcis, ca să batjocorească oştirile Dumnezeului celui Viu?

27 A nd the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

Ei i-au repetat ceea ce spuseseră înainte, zicând: „Astfel i se va face celui care-l va ucide.“

28 A nd Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

Eliab, fratele lui cel mai mare, l-a auzit vorbind cu luptătorii, s-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui şi i-a spus: – De ce ai venit aici şi cu cine ai lăsat acele puţine oi în pustie? Îţi cunosc eu mândria şi răutatea inimii. Ai venit să vezi lupta.

29 A nd David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

– Cu ce am greşit acum? Nu pot nici măcar să vorbesc? i-a răspuns David.

30 A nd he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

După aceea, s-a întors de la el spre un altul şi l-a întrebat acelaşi lucru. Toţi i-au dat acelaşi răspuns ca mai înainte.

31 A nd when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

Cuvintele rostite de David au fost auzite şi raportate lui Saul, care a trimis după el.

32 A nd David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

David i-a zis lui Saul: – Nimeni să nu fie descurajat din cauza acestui filistean. Slujitorul tău va merge şi se va lupta cu el.

33 A nd Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

Saul însă i-a răspuns: – Nu poţi să mergi împotriva acestui filistean ca să te lupţi cu el, fiindcă tu eşti doar un tinerel, pe când el este un luptător încă din tinereţea lui.

34 A nd David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

Dar David i-a răspuns: – Slujitorul tău era păstor la oile tatălui său. Când venea un leu sau un urs şi lua o oaie din turmă,

35 A nd I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

mă duceam după el, îl loveam şi salvam oaia din gura lui. Dacă se ridica împotriva mea, îl apucam de coamă şi-l loveam până îl omoram.

36 T hy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

Slujitorul tău a omorât şi leul şi ursul, iar cu filisteanul acesta, cu acest necircumcis, va fi ca şi cu unul dintre ei, pentru că a batjocorit oştirile Dumnezeului celui Viu.

37 D avid said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

David a mai zis: – Domnul, Care m-a izbăvit din laba leului şi a ursului, mă va izbăvi şi din mâna acestui filistean. Atunci Saul i-a spus lui David: – Du-te şi Domnul să fie cu tine.

38 A nd Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

Saul l-a îmbrăcat pe David cu armura sa: i-a pus un coif de bronz pe cap şi l-a îmbrăcat cu o platoşă din zale.

39 A nd David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

David a legat sabia lui Saul peste armură şi a încercat să meargă, deoarece nu era obişnuit cu ele. S-a dezbrăcat însă de ele, spunându-i lui Saul: – Nu pot să merg cu ele, căci nu sunt obişnuit.

40 A nd he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

După aceea şi-a luat toiagul în mână, a ales cinci pietre netede din ued, pe care le-a pus în buzunarul traistei sale de păstor, şi-a luat praştia şi s-a îndreptat înspre filistean.

41 A nd the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

Filisteanul se apropia din ce în ce mai mult de David, iar cel ce-i ducea scutul era înaintea lui.

42 A nd when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

Filisteanul s-a uitat şi când l-a văzut pe David, l-a dispreţuit, căci acesta nu era decât un tânăr cu păr roşcat şi cu înfăţişare frumoasă.

43 A nd the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

El i-a zis lui David: – Sunt eu un câine de vii la mine cu toiege? Apoi a început să-l blesteme în numele zeilor săi.

44 A nd the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

Filisteanul i-a mai zis lui David: – Vino la mine şi voi da trupul tău păsărilor văzduhului şi fiarelor câmpului.

45 T hen said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

David i-a răspuns: – Tu vii la mine cu sabie, suliţă şi lance dar eu vin la tine în Numele Domnului Oştirilor, Dumnezeul oştirilor lui Israel, pe Care tu L-ai batjocorit.

46 T his day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

În ziua aceasta Domnul te va da în mâna mea, te voi lovi şi-ţi voi tăia capul. Astăzi voi da păsărilor văzduhului şi fiarelor pământului hoiturile oştirii filistenilor şi întreg pământul va şti că Israel are un Dumnezeu.

47 A nd all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord 's, and he will give you into our hands.

Şi toţi cei care sunt adunaţi aici vor şti că nu prin sabie şi prin suliţă dă Domnul izbăvire. Căci lupta este a Domnului, iar El vă va da în mâinile noastre.

48 A nd it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

De îndată ce filisteanul a început să se apropie de David, acesta a alergat repede înspre liniile de luptă ca să-l înfrunte.

49 A nd David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

David şi-a băgat mâna în traistă de unde a scos o piatră. A aruncat piatra cu ajutorul praştiei şi l-a lovit pe filistean în frunte. Piatra a pătruns în fruntea lui, iar el a căzut cu faţa la pământ.

50 S o David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

David a avut biruinţă asupra filisteanului. Deşi David nu avea sabie în mână, el l-a lovit pe filistean şi l-a ucis doar cu o praştie şi cu o piatră.

51 T herefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Apoi David a alergat şi s-a oprit lângă filistean. I-a luat sabia, a scos-o din teaca ei şi i-a tăiat capul cu ea. Când au văzut că eroul lor era mort, filistenii au luat-o la fugă.

52 A nd the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

Atunci luptătorii lui Israel şi cei ai lui Iuda s-au ridicat, au scos un strigăt de război şi i-au urmărit pe filisteni până la intrarea în Gat şi până la porţile Ekronului. Filistenii, răniţi de moarte, au căzut pe drumul Şaarayimului până la Gat şi la Ekron.

53 A nd the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

Când s-au întors de la urmărirea filistenilor, israeliţii le-au prădat tabăra.

54 A nd David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

David a luat capul filisteanului şi l-a adus la Ierusalim, iar armele filisteanului le-a dus la el în cort.

55 A nd when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

Când l-a văzut Saul pe David înaintând împotriva filisteanului, l-a întrebat pe Abner, conducătorul oştirii: – Abner, al cui fiu este acest tânăr? – Viu este sufletul tău, rege, că nu ştiu, i-a răspuns Abner.

56 A nd the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.

Atunci regele i-a zis: – Află al cui fiu este acest tânăr.

57 A nd as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Îndată ce David s-a întors de la uciderea filisteanului, Abner l-a luat şi l-a adus înaintea lui Saul. David avea în mână capul filisteanului.

58 A nd Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

Saul l-a întrebat: – Al cui fiu eşti, tinere? – Sunt fiul slujitorului tău Işai, din Betleem, i-a răspuns David
