1 N ow the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

I Filistei raccolsero i loro eserciti per combattere e si radunarono a Soco, che appartiene a Giuda, e si accamparono tra Soco e Azeca, a Efes-Dammim.

2 A nd Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

Saul e gli uomini d’Israele si radunarono anch’essi, si accamparono nella valle dei terebinti e si schierarono in battaglia contro i Filistei.

3 A nd the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

I Filistei stavano sul monte da una parte e Israele stava sul monte dall’altra; in mezzo a loro c’era la valle.

4 A nd there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Dall’accampamento dei Filistei uscì un campione di nome Goliat, di Gat, alto sei cubiti e un palmo.

5 A nd he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

Aveva in testa un elmo di bronzo, indossava una corazza a squame che pesava cinquemila sicli di bronzo,

6 A nd he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

portava delle gambiere di bronzo e un giavellotto di bronzo dietro le spalle.

7 A nd the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

L’asta della sua lancia era robusta come un subbio di tessitore, la punta della lancia pesava seicento sicli di ferro e colui che portava il suo scudo lo precedeva.

8 A nd he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

Egli dunque si fermò e, rivolto alle schiere d’Israele, gridò: «Perché uscite a schierarvi in battaglia? Non sono io il Filisteo e voi dei servi di Saul? Scegliete uno dei vostri e scenda contro di me.

9 I f he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

Se egli potrà lottare con me e uccidermi, noi saremo vostri servi; ma se io sarò vincitore e l’ucciderò, voi sarete nostri sudditi e ci servirete».

10 A nd the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

Il Filisteo aggiunse: «Io lancio oggi questa sfida a disonore delle schiere d’Israele: datemi un uomo e ci batteremo!»

11 W hen Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

Quando Saul e tutto Israele udirono queste parole del Filisteo, rimasero sgomenti ed ebbero gran paura.

12 N ow David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

Or Davide era figlio di quell’uomo efrateo di Betlemme di Giuda, che si chiamava Isai. Questi aveva otto figli e al tempo di Saul era vecchio, molto avanti negli anni.

13 A nd the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

I tre figli maggiori d’Isai erano andati alla guerra con Saul; essi si chiamavano: Eliab il primogenito, Abinadab il secondo e Samma il terzo.

14 A nd David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

Davide era il più giovane; quando i tre maggiori ebbero seguito Saul,

15 B ut David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

Davide partì da Saul e tornò a Betlemme a pascolare le pecore di suo padre.

16 A nd the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

Intanto il Filisteo si faceva avanti mattina e sera; si presentò così per quaranta giorni.

17 A nd Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;

Un giorno Isai disse a Davide suo figlio: «Prendi per i tuoi fratelli quest’efa di grano arrostito e questi dieci pani, e portali presto ai tuoi fratelli nell’accampamento.

18 A nd carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

Porta anche questi dieci formaggi al comandante del loro migliaio; vedi se i tuoi fratelli stanno bene e riportami un segno da parte loro.

19 N ow Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Saul ed essi, con tutti gli uomini d’Israele, stanno nella valle dei terebinti a combattere contro i Filistei».

20 A nd David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

L’indomani Davide si alzò di buon mattino, lasciò le pecore a un guardiano, prese il suo carico e partì come Isai gli aveva ordinato; appena giunse al parco dei carri, l’esercito usciva per schierarsi in battaglia e alzava il grido di guerra.

21 F or Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

Israeliti e Filistei si erano schierati: un esercito di fronte all’altro.

22 A nd David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

Davide lasciò al guardiano dei bagagli le cose che portava e corse alla linea di battaglia; appena la raggiunse chiese ai suoi fratelli come stavano.

23 A nd as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

Mentr’egli parlava con loro, ecco uscire dalle file dei Filistei quel campione, quel Filisteo di Gat, di nome Goliat, ripetendo le solite parole; e Davide le udì.

24 A nd all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

Tutti gli uomini d’Israele, alla vista di quell’uomo, fuggirono davanti a lui, presi da gran paura.

25 A nd the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

Gli uomini d’Israele dicevano: «Avete visto quell’uomo che avanza? Egli avanza per coprire di vergogna Israele. Se qualcuno lo uccide, il re lo farà molto ricco, gli darà sua figlia ed esenterà la casa del padre di lui da ogni obbligo in Israele».

26 A nd David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

Davide, rivolgendosi a quelli che gli erano vicini, disse: «Che si farà dunque all’uomo che ucciderà il Filisteo e toglierà questa vergogna a Israele? Chi è questo Filisteo, questo incirconciso, che osa insultare le schiere del Dio vivente?»

27 A nd the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

La gente gli rispose con le stesse parole di prima, dicendo: «Si farà questo e questo a colui che lo ucciderà».

28 A nd Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

Eliab, suo fratello maggiore, avendo udito Davide parlare a quella gente, si accese d’ira contro di lui e disse: «Perché sei sceso qua? A chi hai lasciato quelle poche pecore nel deserto? Io conosco il tuo orgoglio e la malignità del tuo cuore; tu sei sceso qua per vedere la battaglia».

29 A nd David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

Davide rispose: «Che ho fatto ora? Non era che una semplice domanda!»

30 A nd he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

Poi, allontanandosi da lui, si rivolse a un altro facendo la stessa domanda; e la gente gli diede la stessa risposta di prima.

31 A nd when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

Le parole che Davide aveva dette furono sentite e riportate a Saul, che lo fece venire.

32 A nd David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

Davide disse a Saul: «Nessuno si perda d’animo a motivo di costui! Il tuo servo andrà e si batterà con quel Filisteo».

33 A nd Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

Saul disse a Davide: «Tu non puoi andare a batterti con quel Filisteo; poiché tu non sei che un ragazzo, ed egli è un guerriero fin dalla sua giovinezza».

34 A nd David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

Davide rispose a Saul: «Il tuo servo pascolava il gregge di suo padre e talvolta veniva un leone o un orso a portare via una pecora dal gregge.

35 A nd I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

Allora gli correvo dietro, lo colpivo, gli strappavo dalle fauci la preda; e se quello mi si rivoltava contro, lo afferravo per le mascelle, lo ferivo e l’ammazzavo.

36 T hy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

Sì, il tuo servo ha ucciso il leone e l’orso; questo Filisteo incirconciso sarà come uno di quelli, perché ha coperto di vergogna le schiere del Dio vivente».

37 D avid said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

Davide soggiunse: «Il Signore, che mi liberò dalla zampa del leone e dalla zampa dell’orso, mi libererà anche dalla mano di questo Filisteo». Saul disse a Davide: «Va’, e il Signore sia con te».

38 A nd Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

Saul rivestì Davide della sua armatura, gli mise in capo un elmo di bronzo e gli fece mettere la corazza.

39 A nd David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

Poi Davide cinse la spada di Saul sopra la sua armatura e cercò di camminare, perché non aveva ancora provato; allora disse a Saul: «Non posso camminare con questa armatura, non ci sono abituato». E se la tolse di dosso.

40 A nd he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

Poi prese in mano il suo bastone, si scelse nel torrente cinque pietre ben lisce, le pose nella sacchetta da pastore che gli serviva da bisaccia, e con la fionda in mano si diresse verso il Filisteo.

41 A nd the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

Intanto avanzava anche il Filisteo, avvicinandosi sempre più a Davide, mentre il suo scudiero lo precedeva.

42 A nd when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

Quando il Filisteo vide Davide, lo disprezzò, perché egli non era che un ragazzo, biondo e di bell’aspetto.

43 A nd the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

Il Filisteo disse a Davide: «Sono forse un cane, che tu vieni contro di me con il bastone?» E maledisse Davide in nome dei suoi dèi.

44 A nd the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

Poi il Filisteo disse a Davide: «Vieni qua, e darò la tua carne in pasto agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie dei campi».

45 T hen said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

Allora Davide rispose al Filisteo: «Tu vieni verso di me con la spada, con la lancia e con il giavellotto; ma io vengo verso di te nel nome del Signore degli eserciti, del Dio delle schiere d’Israele che tu hai insultate.

46 T his day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

Oggi il Signore ti darà nelle mie mani e io ti abbatterò; ti taglierò la testa, e darò oggi stesso i cadaveri dell’esercito dei Filistei in pasto agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie della terra; così tutta la terra riconoscerà che c’è un Dio in Israele,

47 A nd all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord 's, and he will give you into our hands.

e tutta questa moltitudine riconoscerà che il Signore non ha bisogno di spada né di lancia per salvare; poiché l’esito della battaglia dipende dal Signore ed egli vi darà nelle nostre mani».

48 A nd it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

Appena il Filisteo si mosse e si fece avanti per avvicinarsi a Davide, anche Davide corse verso la linea di battaglia contro il Filisteo;

49 A nd David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

mise la mano nella sacchetta, prese una pietra, la lanciò con la fionda e colpì il Filisteo in fronte; la pietra gli si conficcò nella fronte ed egli cadde con la faccia a terra.

50 S o David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

Così Davide, con una fionda e una pietra, vinse il Filisteo; lo colpì e lo uccise, senza avere spada in mano.

51 T herefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Poi Davide corse, si gettò sul Filisteo, gli prese la spada e, sguainatala, lo uccise e gli tagliò la testa. I Filistei, vedendo che il loro eroe era morto, si diedero alla fuga.

52 A nd the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

Allora gli uomini d’Israele e di Giuda si alzarono, lanciarono il grido di guerra, e inseguirono i Filistei fino all’ingresso di Gat e alle porte di Ecron. I Filistei feriti a morte caddero sulla via di Saaraim, fino a Gat e fino a Ecron.

53 A nd the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

I figli d’Israele, dopo aver dato la caccia ai Filistei, tornarono e saccheggiarono il loro accampamento.

54 A nd David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

Davide prese la testa del Filisteo e la portò a Gerusalemme, ma ripose le armi di lui nella sua tenda.

55 A nd when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

Quando Saul aveva visto Davide che andava contro il Filisteo, aveva chiesto ad Abner, capo dell’esercito: «Abner, di chi è figlio questo ragazzo?» Abner aveva risposto: «Com’è vero che tu vivi, o re, io non lo so».

56 A nd the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.

Allora il re disse: «Infòrmati di chi sia figlio questo ragazzo».

57 A nd as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Quando Davide tornò, dopo aver ucciso il Filisteo, Abner lo prese e lo condusse da Saul; egli aveva ancora in mano la testa del Filisteo.

58 A nd Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

Saul gli chiese: «Ragazzo, di chi sei figlio?» Davide rispose: «Sono figlio del tuo servo Isai di Betlemme».
