1 J osiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.

Giosia aveva otto anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme.

2 A nd he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

Egli fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore e camminò per le vie di Davide suo padre, senza scostarsene né a destra né a sinistra.

3 F or in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

L’ottavo anno del suo regno, mentre era ancora ragazzo, cominciò a cercare il Dio di Davide suo padre; e il dodicesimo anno cominciò a purificare Giuda e Gerusalemme dagli alti luoghi, dagli idoli di Astarte, dalle immagini scolpite e dalle immagini fuse.

4 A nd they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

In sua presenza furono demoliti gli altari dei Baal e abbattute le colonne solari che c’erano sopra. Frantumò gli idoli di Astarte, le immagini scolpite e le statue, e le ridusse in polvere, che sparse sulle tombe di quelli che avevano offerto loro dei sacrifici;

5 A nd he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

bruciò le ossa dei sacerdoti sui loro altari. Così purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme.

6 A nd so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.

Lo stesso fece nelle città di Manasse, di Efraim, di Simeone e fino a Neftali: dappertutto, in mezzo alle loro rovine,

7 A nd when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

demolì gli altari, frantumò e ridusse in polvere gli idoli di Astarte e le immagini scolpite, abbatté tutte le colonne solari in tutto il paese d’Israele e tornò a Gerusalemme.

8 N ow in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God.

Il diciottesimo anno del suo regno, dopo aver purificato il paese e la casa del Signore, mandò Safan, figlio di Asalia, Maaseia, governatore della città, e Ioa, figlio di Ioacaz, l’archivista, per restaurare la casa del Signore, suo Dio.

9 A nd when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.

Quelli si recarono dal sommo sacerdote Chilchia, e fu loro consegnato il denaro che era stato portato nel tempio di Dio e che i Leviti, custodi della soglia, avevano raccolto in Manasse, in Efraim, in tutto il rimanente d’Israele, in tutto Giuda e Beniamino e fra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

10 A nd they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair and amend the house:

Essi lo rimisero nelle mani dei direttori preposti ai lavori della casa del Signore, e i direttori lo diedero a quelli che lavoravano nella casa del Signore per ripararla e restaurarla.

11 E ven to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

Lo diedero ai falegnami e ai costruttori, per comprare delle pietre da tagliare e del legname per l’armatura e la travatura delle case che i re di Giuda avevano distrutte.

12 A nd the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.

Quegli uomini facevano il loro lavoro con fedeltà; ad essi erano preposti Iaat e Obadia, Leviti dei figli di Merari, e Zaccaria e Mesullam dei figli di Cheat, per la direzione, e tutti quelli dei Leviti che erano abili a suonare strumenti musicali.

13 A lso they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

Questi sorvegliavano pure i portatori di pesi e dirigevano tutti gli operai occupati nei diversi lavori; fra i Leviti addetti a quei lavori ce n’erano di quelli che erano segretari, commissari, portinai. Il libro della legge trovato nel tempio

14 A nd when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses.

Mentre si prelevava il denaro che era stato portato nella casa del Signore, il sacerdote Chilchia trovò il libro della legge del Signore, data per mezzo di Mosè.

15 A nd Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

Chilchia parlò a Safan, il segretario, e gli disse: «Ho trovato nella casa del Signore il libro della legge». E Chilchia diede il libro a Safan.

16 A nd Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.

Safan portò il libro al re e gli fece al tempo stesso la sua relazione, dicendo: «I tuoi servi hanno fatto tutto quello che è stato loro ordinato.

17 A nd they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.

Hanno versato il denaro che si è trovato nella casa del Signore e l’hanno consegnato a quelli che sono responsabili dei lavori e degli operai».

18 T hen Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

Safan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: «Il sacerdote Chilchia m’ha dato un libro». E Safan lo lesse in presenza del re.

19 A nd it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

Quando il re udì le parole della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

20 A nd the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying,

Poi il re diede quest’ordine a Chilchia, ad Aicam, figlio di Safan, ad Abdon, figlio di Mica, a Safan il segretario e ad Asaia, servitore del re:

21 G o, enquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do after all that is written in this book.

«Andate a consultare il Signore per me e per ciò che rimane d’Israele e di Giuda riguardo alle parole di questo libro che si è trovato; poiché grande è l’ira del Signore che si è riversata su di noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno osservato la parola del Signore e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello che è scritto in questo libro».

22 A nd Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.

Chilchia e quelli che il re aveva designati andarono dalla profetessa Culda, moglie di Sallum, figlio di Tocat, figlio di Casra, il custode del vestiario. Lei abitava a Gerusalemme, nel secondo quartiere; e quelli le parlarono nel senso indicato dal re.

23 A nd she answered them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,

Lei disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati da me:

24 T hus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:

‘Così dice il Signore: Ecco, io farò venire delle sciagure su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti, farò venire tutte le maledizioni che sono scritte nel libro, che è stato letto in presenza del re di Giuda.

25 B ecause they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

Poiché essi mi hanno abbandonato e hanno offerto incenso ad altri dèi, provocando la mia ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani; perciò la mia ira si è accesa contro questo luogo e non si spegnerà’.

26 A nd as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the Lord, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;

Al re di Giuda, che vi ha mandati a consultare il Signore, direte questo: ‘Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele, riguardo alle parole che tu hai udite:

27 B ecause thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the Lord.

Poiché il tuo cuore è stato toccato, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a Dio, udendo le sue parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a me e ti sei stracciate le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch’io ti ho ascoltato’, dice il Signore.

28 B ehold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

‘Ecco, io ti riunirò con i tuoi padri e te ne andrai in pace nella tua tomba; e i tuoi occhi non vedranno tutte le sciagure che io farò piombare su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti’”». E quelli riferirono al re la risposta.

29 T hen the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

Allora il re mandò a chiamare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

30 A nd the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the Lord.

Il re salì alla casa del Signore con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e tutto il popolo, grandi e piccoli, e lesse in loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, che era stato trovato nella casa del Signore.

31 A nd the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

Il re, stando in piedi sul palco, fece un patto davanti al Signore, impegnandosi a seguire il Signore, a osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e le sue leggi con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, per mettere in pratica le parole del patto scritte in questo libro.

32 A nd he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

E fece aderire al patto tutti quelli che si trovavano a Gerusalemme e in Beniamino; e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si conformarono al patto di Dio, Dio dei loro padri.

33 A nd Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the Lord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

Giosia fece sparire tutte le abominazioni da tutti i paesi che appartenevano ai figli d’Israele, e impose a tutti quelli che si trovavano in Israele di servire il Signore, loro Dio. Durante tutto il tempo della vita di Giosia essi non cessarono di seguire il Signore, Dio dei loro padri.
