1 B elshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Il re Baldassar fece un grande banchetto per mille dei suoi grandi e bevve vino in loro presenza.

2 B elshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

Mentre stava assaporando il vino, Baldassar ordinò che si portassero i vasi d’oro e d’argento che Nabucodonosor, suo padre, aveva preso dal tempio di Gerusalemme, perché il re, i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine se ne servissero per bere.

3 T hen they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

Allora furono portati i vasi d’oro che erano stati presi nel tempio, nella casa di Dio, che era in Gerusalemme; il re, i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine li usarono per bere.

4 T hey drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Bevvero il vino e lodarono gli dèi d’oro, d’argento, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra.

5 I n the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

In quel momento apparvero le dita di una mano d’uomo, che si misero a scrivere, di fronte al candeliere, sull’intonaco della parete del palazzo reale. Il re vide quel pezzo di mano che scriveva.

6 T hen the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Allora il re cambiò colore e i suoi pensieri lo spaventarono; le giunture dei suoi fianchi si rilassarono e le sue ginocchia cominciarono a sbattere l’una contro l’altra.

7 T he king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

A voce alta il re gridò che si facessero entrare gli incantatori, i Caldei e gli astrologi, e il re disse ai saggi di Babilonia: «Chiunque leggerà questo scritto e me ne darà l’interpretazione sarà vestito di porpora, porterà una collana d’oro al collo e sarà terzo nel governo del regno».

8 T hen came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

Allora entrarono tutti i saggi del re, ma non furono capaci di leggere lo scritto né di darne l’interpretazione al re.

9 T hen was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

Il re Baldassar fu perciò preso da grande spavento e cambiò colore, e i suoi grandi furono costernati.

10 N ow the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

La regina udì le parole del re e dei suoi grandi, ed entrata nella sala del banchetto disse: «Vivi in eterno, o re! I tuoi pensieri non ti spaventino e non ti facciano impallidire!

11 T here is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

C’è un uomo, nel tuo regno, in cui è lo spirito degli dèi santi. Già al tempo di tuo padre si trovavano in lui una luce, un’intelligenza e una saggezza pari alla saggezza degli dèi. Il re Nabucodonosor, tuo padre, lo fece capo dei magi, degli incantatori, dei Caldei e degli astrologi,

12 F orasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

poiché in questo Daniele, che il re aveva chiamato Baltazzar, fu trovato uno spirito straordinario, conoscenza, intelligenza e la facoltà di interpretare i sogni, di spiegare enigmi e di risolvere questioni difficili. Si chiami dunque Daniele ed egli darà l’interpretazione».

13 T hen was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

Allora Daniele fu introdotto alla presenza del re, e il re gli disse: «Sei tu Daniele, uno dei Giudei che il re mio padre condusse qui in esilio dalla Giudea?

14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

Io ho sentito dire che tu possiedi lo spirito degli dèi, che in te si trovano luce, intelligenza e una saggezza straordinaria.

15 A nd now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

Poco fa sono stati introdotti davanti a me i saggi e gli incantatori per leggere questa scrittura e darmene l’interpretazione, ma non ne sono stati capaci.

16 A nd I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Però ho sentito dire che tu sai dare interpretazioni e risolvere questioni difficili; ora, se puoi leggere questo scritto e farmene conoscere l’interpretazione, tu sarai vestito di porpora, porterai al collo una collana d’oro e sarai il terzo nel governo del regno».

17 T hen Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

Allora Daniele rispose al re e disse: «Serba i tuoi doni per te e dà a un altro le tue ricompense! Tuttavia io leggerò lo scritto al re e gliene darò l’interpretazione.

18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

O re, il Dio altissimo aveva dato regno, grandezza, gloria e maestà a tuo padre Nabucodonosor.

19 A nd for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

Per questa grandezza che Dio gli aveva dato, le genti di ogni popolo, nazione e lingua temevano e tremavano alla sua presenza. Egli faceva morire chi voleva, lasciava in vita chi voleva; innalzava chi voleva, abbassava chi voleva.

20 B ut when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

Ma quando il suo cuore divenne orgoglioso e il suo spirito s’indurì fino a diventare tracotante, il re fu deposto dal suo trono e gli fu tolta la sua gloria;

21 A nd he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

fu scacciato di mezzo agli uomini e il suo cuore divenne simile a quello delle bestie. Abitò con gli asini selvatici, gli fu dato da mangiare erba come ai buoi e il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo finché non riconobbe che il regno degli uomini appartiene al Dio altissimo, il quale vi stabilisce sopra chi vuole.

22 A nd thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

E tu, Baldassar, suo figlio, non hai umiliato il tuo cuore, benché tu sapessi tutto questo,

23 B ut hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

ma ti sei innalzato contro il Signore del cielo. Ti sono stati portati i vasi della casa di Dio e in essi avete bevuto tu, i tuoi grandi, le tue mogli e le tue concubine; tu hai lodato gli dèi d’argento, d’oro, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra, i quali non vedono, non odono e non comprendono, e non hai glorificato il Dio che ha nella sua mano il tuo soffio vitale, e dal quale dipendono tutte le tue vie.

24 T hen was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

Perciò egli ha mandato quel pezzo di mano che ha tracciato quello scritto.

25 A nd this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.

Ecco le parole che sono state scritte: “Mené, Mené, Tèchel, U-Parsin ”.

26 T his is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

Questa è l’interpretazione delle parole: Mené, Dio ha fatto il conto del tuo regno e gli ha posto fine;

27 T ekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

Tèchel, tu sei stato pesato con la bilancia e sei stato trovato mancante.

28 P eres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

Perès, il tuo regno è diviso e dato ai Medi e ai Persiani».

29 T hen commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Allora, per ordine di Baldassar, Daniele fu vestito di porpora, gli fu messa al collo una collana d’oro e fu proclamato terzo nel governo del regno.

30 I n that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

In quella stessa notte Baldassar, re dei Caldei, fu ucciso,

31 A nd Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

e Dario il Medo ricevette il regno all’età di sessantadue anni.
