1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

La risposta dolce calma il furore, ma la parola dura eccita l’ira.

2 T he tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

La lingua dei saggi è ricca di scienza, ma la bocca degli stolti sgorga follia.

3 T he eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Gli occhi del Signore sono in ogni luogo, osservano i cattivi e i buoni.

4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

La lingua che calma è un albero di vita, ma la lingua perversa strazia lo spirito.

5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

L’insensato disprezza l’istruzione di suo padre, ma chi tiene conto della riprensione diviene accorto.

6 I n the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

Nella casa del giusto c’è grande abbondanza, ma nell’accumulo dell’empio c’è imbroglio.

7 T he lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.

Le labbra dei saggi diffondono scienza, ma non così il cuore degli stolti.

8 T he sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Il sacrificio degli empi è in abominio al Signore, ma la preghiera degli uomini retti gli è gradita.

9 T he way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

La via dell’empio è in abominio al Signore, ma egli ama chi segue la giustizia.

10 C orrection is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Una dura correzione spetta a chi lascia la retta via; chi odia la riprensione morirà.

11 H ell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

Il soggiorno dei morti e l’abisso stanno davanti al Signore; quanto più i cuori dei figli degli uomini!

12 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

Il beffardo non ama che altri lo riprenda; egli non va dai saggi.

13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Il cuore allegro rende gioioso il volto, ma quando il cuore è triste lo spirito è abbattuto.

14 T he heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

Il cuore dell’uomo intelligente cerca la scienza, ma la bocca degli stolti si pasce di follia.

15 A ll the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

Tutti i giorni sono brutti per l’afflitto, ma per il cuore contento è sempre allegria.

16 B etter is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Meglio poco con il timore del Signore, che gran tesoro con turbamento.

17 B etter is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

Meglio un piatto d’erbe dov’è l’amore, che un bue ingrassato dov’è l’odio.

18 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

L’uomo collerico fa nascere contese, ma chi è lento all’ira calma le liti.

19 T he way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

La via del pigro è come una siepe di spine, ma il sentiero degli uomini retti è piano.

20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Il figlio saggio rallegra il padre, ma l’uomo stolto disprezza sua madre.

21 F olly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

La follia è una gioia per chi è privo di senno, ma l’uomo intelligente cammina diritto per la sua via.

22 W ithout counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

I disegni falliscono dove mancano i consigli, ma riescono dove sono molti i consiglieri.

23 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

Uno prova gioia quando risponde bene; è buona la parola detta a suo tempo!

24 T he way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

Per l’uomo sagace la via della vita conduce in alto, gli fa evitare il soggiorno dei morti, situato in basso.

25 T he Lord will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

Il Signore rovescia la casa dei superbi, ma rende stabili i confini della vedova.

26 T he thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

I pensieri malvagi sono in abominio al Signore, ma le parole benevole sono pure ai suoi occhi.

27 H e that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

Chi è avido di lucro turba la sua casa, ma chi odia i regali vivrà.

28 T he heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Il cuore del giusto medita la sua risposta, ma la bocca degli empi sgorga cose malvagie.

29 T he Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Il Signore è lontano dagli empi, ma ascolta la preghiera dei giusti.

30 T he light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.

Uno sguardo luminoso rallegra il cuore; una buona notizia fortifica le ossa.

31 T he ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

L’orecchio attento alla riprensione che conduce alla vita, abiterà tra i saggi.

32 H e that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Chi rifiuta l’istruzione disprezza se stesso, ma chi dà retta alla riprensione acquista senno.

33 T he fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Il timore del Signore è scuola di saggezza, e l’umiltà precede la gloria.
