1 T hus saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

Così parla il Signore: «Scendi nella casa del re di Giuda e là pronuncia questa parola:

2 A nd say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

“Ascolta la parola del Signore, o re di Giuda, che siedi sul trono di Davide: tu, i tuoi servitori e il tuo popolo, che entrate per queste porte!

3 T hus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

Così parla il Signore: ‘Esercitate il diritto e la giustizia; liberate dalla mano dell’oppressore colui al quale è tolto il suo; non fate torto né violenza allo straniero, all’orfano e alla vedova; non spargete sangue innocente in questo luogo.

4 F or if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.

Infatti, se metterete realmente in pratica questa parola, dei re a cui appartiene il trono di Davide entreranno per le porte di questa casa su carri e su cavalli: entreranno essi, i loro servitori e il loro popolo.

5 B ut if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation.

Ma se non date ascolto a queste parole, io giuro per me stesso’, dice il Signore, ‘che questa casa andrà in rovina’”».

6 F or thus saith the Lord unto the king's house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.

Poiché così parla il Signore riguardo alla casa del re di Giuda: «Tu eri per me come Galaad, come la vetta del Libano. Ma, certo, io ti ridurrò simile a un deserto, a delle città disabitate.

7 A nd I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.

Preparo contro di te dei devastatori, armati ciascuno delle sue armi; essi abbatteranno i cedri tuoi più belli e li getteranno nel fuoco.

8 A nd many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

Molte nazioni passeranno presso questa città, e ognuno dirà all’altro: “Perché il Signore ha fatto così a questa grande città?”

9 T hen they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

Si risponderà: “Perché hanno abbandonato il patto del Signore, del loro Dio; perché si sono prostrati davanti ad altri dèi e li hanno serviti”».

10 W eep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

Non piangete per il morto, non vi affliggete per lui; ma piangete, piangete per colui che se ne va, perché non tornerà più e non vedrà più il suo paese natìo.

11 F or thus saith the Lord touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:

Infatti così parla il Signore riguardo a Sallum, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, che regnava al posto di Giosia, suo padre, e che è uscito da questo luogo: «Egli non vi ritornerà più,

12 B ut he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.

ma morirà nel luogo dove l’hanno deportato; non vedrà più questo paese».

13 W oe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

«Guai a colui che costruisce la sua casa senza giustizia e le sue camere senza equità, che fa lavorare il prossimo per nulla e non gli paga il suo salario

14 T hat saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

e dice: “Mi costruirò una casa grande con camere spaziose al piano di sopra”. Egli vi fa delle finestre, la riveste di legno di cedro e la dipinge di rosso!

15 S halt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?

Tu regni forse perché hai la passione del cedro? Tuo padre forse non mangiava e beveva? Però faceva ciò che è retto e giusto, e tutto gli andava bene.

16 H e judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord.

Egli giudicava la causa del povero e del bisognoso, e tutto gli andava bene. Questo non significa forse conoscermi?», dice il Signore.

17 B ut thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

«Ma tu non hai occhi né cuore che per la tua cupidigia, per spargere sangue innocente, per fare oppressione e violenza».

18 T herefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

Perciò così parla il Signore riguardo a Ioiachim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda: «Non lo si compiangerà, dicendo: “Ahimè, fratello mio, ahimè, sorella!” Non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: “Ahimè, signore, ahimè, maestà!”

19 H e shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Sarà sepolto come si seppellisce un asino, trascinato e gettato fuori dalle porte di Gerusalemme».

20 G o up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.

«Sali sul Libano e grida, alza la voce in Basan, grida dall’Abarim, perché tutti i tuoi amanti sono distrutti.

21 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

Io ti ho parlato al tempo della tua prosperità, ma tu dicevi: “Io non ascolterò”. Questo è stato il tuo modo di fare sin dalla tua adolescenza; tu non hai mai dato ascolto alla mia voce.

22 T he wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

Tutti i tuoi pastori saranno pastura del vento e i tuoi amanti saranno deportati; allora sarai svergognata, confusa, per tutta la tua malvagità.

23 O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!

Tu che abiti nel Libano, che ti annidi fra i cedri, come farai pietà quando ti coglieranno i dolori, le doglie come quelle di una donna che partorisce!

24 A s I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;

Com’è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, «anche se Conia, figlio di Ioiachim, re di Giuda, fosse un sigillo nella mia destra, io ti strapperei da lì.

25 A nd I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Io ti darò nelle mani di quelli che cercano la tua vita, nelle mani di quelli dei quali hai paura, nelle mani di Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, nelle mani dei Caldei.

26 A nd I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.

Caccerò te e tua madre, che ti ha partorito, in un paese straniero dove non siete nati, e là morirete.

27 B ut to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.

Ma quanto al paese in cui desiderano tornare, essi non vi torneranno».

28 I s this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?

Questo Conia è dunque un vaso spezzato, infranto? È forse un oggetto che non fa più alcun piacere? Perché sono dunque cacciati, lui e la sua discendenza, gettati in un paese che non conoscono?

29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.

O paese, o paese, o paese, ascolta la parola del Signore!

30 T hus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

Così parla il Signore: «Iscrivete quest’uomo come privo di figli, come un uomo che non prospererà durante i suoi giorni; perché nessuno della sua discendenza giungerà a sedersi sul trono di Davide e a regnare ancora su Giuda».
