1 A nd the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Poi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Vendica il male che i Madianiti hanno fatto ai figli d’Israele;

2 A venge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.

poi sarai riunito ai tuoi padri».

3 A nd Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian.

Allora Mosè disse al popolo: «Mobilitate fra voi degli uomini per la guerra, e marcino contro Madian per eseguire la vendetta del Signore su Madian.

4 O f every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.

Manderete alla guerra mille uomini per ciascuna delle tribù d’Israele».

5 S o there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

Così furono forniti, dalle schiere d’Israele, mille uomini per tribù: cioè dodicimila uomini, armati per la guerra.

6 A nd Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.

Mosè mandò alla guerra quei mille uomini per tribù, e con loro Fineas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar, il quale portava gli oggetti sacri e aveva in mano le trombe squillanti.

7 A nd they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.

Essi marciarono dunque contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.

8 A nd they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

Uccisero pure, con tutti gli altri, i re di Madian: Evi, Rechem, Sur, Cur e Reba, cinque re di Madian. Uccisero pure con la spada Balaam, figlio di Beor.

9 A nd the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.

I figli d’Israele presero prigioniere le donne di Madian e i loro bambini, predarono tutto il loro bestiame, tutte le loro greggi e ogni loro bene;

10 A nd they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.

appiccarono il fuoco a tutte le città che quelli abitavano e a tutti i loro accampamenti,

11 A nd they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.

e presero tutte le spoglie e tutta la preda: gente e bestiame.

12 A nd they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.

Poi condussero i prigionieri, la preda e le spoglie a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazar e alla comunità dei figli d’Israele, accampati nelle pianure di Moab, presso il Giordano di fronte a Gerico.

13 A nd Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.

Mosè, il sacerdote Eleazar e tutti i capi della comunità uscirono per incontrarli fuori dal campo.

14 A nd Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.

Mosè si adirò contro i comandanti dell’esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.

15 A nd Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?

Mosè disse loro: «Avete lasciato la vita a tutte le donne?

16 B ehold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.

Ecco, sono esse che, per suggerimento di Balaam, trascinarono i figli d’Israele all’infedeltà verso il Signore, nel fatto di Peor, per cui il flagello scoppiò nella comunità del Signore.

17 N ow therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

Ora dunque uccidete ogni maschio tra i bambini, e uccidete ogni donna che ha avuto rapporti sessuali con un uomo;

18 B ut all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

ma tutte le fanciulle che non hanno avuto rapporti sessuali con uomini lasciatele in vita per voi.

19 A nd do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.

«E voi accampatevi per sette giorni fuori del campo; chiunque ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato una persona uccisa si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno: questo tanto per voi quanto per i vostri prigionieri.

20 A nd purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood.

Purificherete anche ogni veste, ogni oggetto di pelle, ogni tessuto di pelo di capra e ogni utensile di legno».

21 A nd Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses;

Il sacerdote Eleazar disse ai soldati che erano andati alla guerra: «Queste sono le disposizioni della legge che il Signore ha prescritto a Mosè:

22 O nly the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

l’oro, l’argento, il bronzo, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,

23 E very thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.

tutte le cose che resistono al fuoco, le farete passare per il fuoco e saranno rese pure; ma saranno purificate anche con l’acqua di purificazione; e tutte le cose che non resistono al fuoco, le farete passare nell’acqua.

24 A nd ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

Vi laverete le vesti il settimo giorno e sarete puri; poi potrete entrare nel campo».

25 A nd the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè:

26 T ake the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:

«Tu, con il sacerdote Eleazar e con i capi famiglia della comunità, fa’ il conto di tutta la preda che è stata fatta: della gente e del bestiame;

27 A nd divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:

e dividi la preda fra i combattenti, che sono andati in guerra, e tutta la comunità.

28 A nd levy a tribute unto the Lord of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:

Dalla parte spettante ai soldati, che sono andati in guerra, preleverai un tributo per il Signore: cioè uno su cinquecento, tanto delle persone quanto dei buoi, degli asini e delle pecore.

29 T ake it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an heave offering of the Lord.

Lo prenderete sulla loro metà e lo darai al sacerdote Eleazar come offerta al Signore.

30 A nd of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.

Dalla metà che spetta ai figli d’Israele prenderai uno su cinquanta, tanto delle persone quanto dei buoi, degli asini, delle pecore, di tutto il bestiame e lo darai ai Leviti, che hanno l’incarico del tabernacolo del Signore ».

31 A nd Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazar fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.

32 A nd the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,

Or la preda, cioè quello che rimaneva del bottino fatto dagli uomini che erano stati alla guerra, consisteva in seicentosettantacinquemila pecore,

33 A nd threescore and twelve thousand beeves,

settantaduemila buoi, sessantunmila asini

34 A nd threescore and one thousand asses,

e trentaduemila persone, ossia donne

35 A nd thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.

che non avevano avuto rapporti sessuali con uomini.

36 A nd the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:

La metà, cioè la parte di quelli che erano andati alla guerra, fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento pecore,

37 A nd the Lord 'S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.

delle quali seicentosettantacinque per il tributo al Signore;

38 A nd the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the Lord 'S tribute was threescore and twelve.

trentaseimila bovini, dei quali settantadue per il tributo al Signore;

39 A nd the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the Lord 'S tribute was threescore and one.

trentamilacinquecento asini, dei quali sessantuno per il tributo al Signore,

40 A nd the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the Lord 'S tribute was thirty and two persons.

e sedicimila persone, delle quali trentadue per il tributo al Signore.

41 A nd Moses gave the tribute, which was the Lord 'S heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Mosè diede al sacerdote Eleazar il tributo prelevato per l’offerta al Signore, come il Signore gli aveva ordinato.

42 A nd of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,

La metà che spettava ai figli d’Israele, dopo che Mosè ebbe fatta la spartizione con gli uomini andati alla guerra, la metà spettante alla comunità

43 ( Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,

fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento pecore,

44 A nd thirty and six thousand beeves,

trentaseimila buoi,

45 A nd thirty thousand asses and five hundred,

trentamilacinquecento asini e sedicimila persone.

46 A nd sixteen thousand persons;)

Da questa metà,

47 E ven of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.

che spettava ai figli d’Israele, Mosè prese uno su cinquanta, tanto degli uomini quanto degli animali, e li diede ai Leviti che hanno l’incarico del tabernacolo del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.

48 A nd the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:

I comandanti dei reparti dell’esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:

49 A nd they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.

«I tuoi servi hanno fatto il conto dei soldati che erano ai nostri ordini e non ne manca neppure uno.

50 W e have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord.

Noi portiamo, come offerta al Signore, ciascuno gli oggetti d’oro che ha trovato: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, pendenti, collane, per fare l’espiazione per le nostre persone davanti al Signore ».

51 A nd Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.

Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazar presero dalle loro mani tutto quell’oro in gioielli lavorati.

52 A nd all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

Tutto l’oro dell’offerta che essi presentarono al Signore, da parte dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia, pesava sedicimilasettecentocinquanta sicli.

53 ( For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)

Ma gli uomini dell’esercito si tennero il bottino che ognuno aveva fatto per conto suo.

54 A nd Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.

Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazar presero l’oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono nella tenda di convegno per ricordare al Signore i figli d’Israele.
