1 M y son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

Figlio mio, se ricevi le mie parole e serbi con cura i miei comandamenti,

2 S o that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

prestando orecchio alla saggezza e inclinando il cuore all’intelligenza,

3 Y ea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

sì, se chiami il discernimento e rivolgi la tua voce all’intelligenza,

4 I f thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

se la cerchi come l’argento e ti dai a scavarla come un tesoro,

5 T hen shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

allora comprenderai il timore del Signore e troverai la scienza di Dio.

6 F or the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Il Signore infatti dà la saggezza; dalla sua bocca provengono la scienza e l’intelligenza.

7 H e layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

Egli tiene in serbo per gli uomini retti un aiuto potente, uno scudo per quelli che camminano nell’integrità,

8 H e keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.

allo scopo di proteggere i sentieri della giustizia e di custodire la via dei suoi fedeli.

9 T hen shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

Allora comprenderai la giustizia, l’equità, la rettitudine e tutte le vie del bene.

10 W hen wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

Perché la saggezza ti entrerà nel cuore, la scienza sarà la delizia dell’anima tua,

11 D iscretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

la riflessione veglierà su di te, l’intelligenza ti proteggerà;

12 T o deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

essa ti scamperà così dalla via malvagia, dalla gente che parla di cose perverse,

13 W ho leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

da quelli che lasciano i sentieri della rettitudine per camminare nelle vie delle tenebre,

14 W ho rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;

che godono a fare il male e si compiacciono delle perversità del malvagio,

15 W hose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:

i cui sentieri sono contorti e percorrono vie tortuose.

16 T o deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

Ti salverà dalla donna adultera, dalla infedele che usa parole seducenti,

17 W hich forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.

che ha abbandonato il compagno della sua gioventù e ha dimenticato il patto del suo Dio.

18 F or her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

Infatti la sua casa pende verso la morte e i suoi sentieri conducono ai defunti.

19 N one that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

Nessuno di quelli che vanno da lei ne ritorna, nessuno riprende i sentieri della vita.

20 T hat thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.

Così camminerai per la via dei buoni e rimarrai nei sentieri dei giusti.

21 F or the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.

Gli uomini retti infatti abiteranno la terra, quelli che sono integri vi rimarranno;

22 B ut the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

ma gli empi saranno sterminati dalla terra, gli sleali ne saranno estirpati.
