1 S ave me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

Al direttore del coro. Sopra «i gigli». Di Davide. Salvami, o Dio, perché le acque mi sono penetrate fino all’anima.

2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

Sprofondo in un pantano senza trovare sostegno; sono scivolato in acque profonde e la corrente mi travolge.

3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

Sono stanco di gridare, la mia gola è riarsa; i miei occhi si spengono nell’attesa del mio Dio.

4 T hey that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

Più numerosi dei capelli del mio capo sono quelli che mi odiano senza ragione; sono potenti quelli che vogliono distruggermi e che a torto mi sono nemici; ho dovuto consegnare ciò che non avevo rubato.

5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

O Dio, tu conosci la mia stoltezza, e le mie colpe non ti sono nascoste.

6 L et not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

Non siano confusi, per causa mia, quelli che sperano in te, o Signore, Dio degli eserciti! Non siano coperti di vergogna per causa mia, quelli che ti cercano, o Dio d’Israele!

7 B ecause for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

Per amor tuo io sopporto gli insulti, la vergogna mi copre la faccia.

8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

Sono un estraneo per i miei fratelli, un forestiero per i figli di mia madre.

9 F or the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Poiché mi divora lo zelo per la tua casa, gli insulti di chi ti oltraggia sono caduti su di me.

10 W hen I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

Ho pianto, ho afflitto l’anima mia con il digiuno, ma ciò mi ha causato disonore.

11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

Ho indossato come vestito il cilicio, ma essi ridono di me.

12 T hey that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

Le persone sedute alla porta sparlano di me, sono divenuto lo zimbello degli ubriaconi.

13 B ut as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

Ma io rivolgo a te la mia preghiera, o Signore, nel momento favorevole! Per la tua grande misericordia, rispondimi, o Dio, assicurandomi la tua salvezza.

14 D eliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

Salvami dal pantano, perché io non affondi! Liberami da chi mi odia e dalle acque profonde.

15 L et not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

Non mi sommerga la corrente delle acque, non m’inghiottisca il vortice, non chiuda il pozzo la sua bocca su di me!

16 H ear me, O Lord; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

Rispondimi, Signore, perché la tua grazia è benefica; vòlgiti a me nella tua grande misericordia.

17 A nd hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

Non nascondere il tuo volto al tuo servo, perché sono in pericolo; affrèttati a rispondermi.

18 D raw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.

Avvicìnati all’anima mia, e riscattala; liberami a causa dei miei nemici.

19 T hou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.

Tu conosci la mia vergogna, il mio disonore e la mia infamia; davanti a te sono tutti i miei nemici.

20 R eproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

L’oltraggio m’ha spezzato il cuore e sono tutto dolente; ho aspettato chi mi confortasse, ma invano; ho atteso dei consolatori, ma non ne ho trovati.

21 T hey gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Hanno messo fiele nel mio cibo e mi hanno dato da bere aceto per dissetarmi.

22 L et their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

La loro tavola imbandita sia per essi come una trappola, un tranello quando si credono al sicuro!

23 L et their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

Gli occhi loro si offuschino e più non vedano; indebolisci per sempre i loro fianchi.

24 P our out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

Riversa su di loro il tuo furore, li raggiunga l’ardore della tua ira.

25 L et their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

Sia desolata la loro dimora, nessuno abiti le loro tende,

26 F or they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

poiché perseguitano colui che hai percosso e godono a raccontarsi i dolori di chi hai ferito.

27 A dd iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

Aggiungi questo peccato ai loro peccati e non abbiano parte alcuna nella tua giustizia.

28 L et them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Siano cancellati dal libro della vita e non siano iscritti fra i giusti.

29 B ut I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

Io sono misero e afflitto; il tuo soccorso, o Dio, mi porti in salvo.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Celebrerò il nome di Dio con un canto, lo esalterò con le mie lodi,

31 T his also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

che il Signore gradirà più dei buoi, più dei tori con corna e unghie.

32 T he humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.

Gli umili lo vedranno e gioiranno; o voi che cercate Dio, fatevi animo,

33 F or the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

poiché il Signore ascolta i bisognosi e non disprezza i suoi prigionieri.

34 L et the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.

Lo lodino i cieli e la terra, i mari e tutto ciò che si muove in essi!

35 F or God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.

Poiché Dio salverà Sion, e ricostruirà le città di Giuda; il suo popolo abiterà in Sion e la possederà.

36 T he seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

Anche la discendenza dei suoi servi l’avrà in eredità, e quanti amano il suo nome vi abiteranno.
