1 E very wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

2 H e that walketh in his uprightness feareth the Lord: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

Chi cammina nella rettitudine teme il Signore, ma chi è traviato nelle sue vie lo disprezza.

3 I n the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

Nella bocca dello stolto germoglia la superbia, ma le labbra dei saggi sono la loro custodia.

4 W here no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

Dove mancano i buoi è vuoto il granaio, ma l’abbondanza della raccolta sta nella forza del bue.

5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Il testimone fedele non mente, ma il testimone falso spaccia menzogne.

6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.

Il beffardo cerca la saggezza e non la trova, ma per l’uomo intelligente la scienza è cosa facile.

7 G o from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

Vattene lontano dallo stolto; sulle sue labbra certo non hai trovato scienza.

8 T he wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

La saggezza dell’uomo accorto sta nel discernere la propria strada, ma la follia degli stolti non è che inganno.

9 F ools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.

Gli insensati si burlano del peccato, ma il favore del Signore sta fra gli uomini retti.

10 T he heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.

Il cuore conosce la propria amarezza, e alla sua gioia non partecipa un estraneo.

11 T he house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.

La casa degli empi sarà distrutta, ma la tenda degli uomini retti fiorirà.

12 T here is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

C’è una via che all’uomo sembra diritta, ma essa conduce alla morte.

13 E ven in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

Anche ridendo, il cuore può essere triste; e la gioia può finire in dolore.

14 T he backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

Lo sviato di cuore avrà la ricompensa del suo modo di vivere, e l’uomo dabbene, quella delle opere sue.

15 T he simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

L’ingenuo crede a tutto quel che si dice, ma l’uomo prudente fa attenzione ai suoi passi.

16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Il saggio teme, ed evita il male, ma lo stolto è arrogante e presuntuoso.

17 H e that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

Chi è pronto all’ira commette follie, e l’uomo pieno di malizia diventa odioso.

18 T he simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Gli sciocchi ereditano stoltezza, ma i prudenti s’incoronano di scienza.

19 T he evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.

I malvagi si inchinano davanti ai buoni, e gli empi, alle porte dei giusti.

20 T he poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends.

Il povero è odiato anche dal suo compagno, ma gli amici del ricco sono molti.

21 H e that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.

Chi disprezza il prossimo pecca, ma beato chi ha pietà dei miseri!

22 D o they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.

Quelli che meditano il male non sono forse traviati? Ma quelli che meditano il bene trovano grazia e fedeltà.

23 I n all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

In ogni fatica c’è profitto, ma il chiacchierare procura la miseria.

24 T he crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.

La corona dei saggi è la loro ricchezza, ma la follia degli stolti non è che follia.

25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

Il testimone veritiero salva delle persone, ma spaccia menzogne il falso testimone.

26 I n the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

C’è grande sicurezza nel timore del Signore; egli sarà un rifugio per i figli di chi lo teme.

27 T he fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Il timore del Signore è fonte di vita e fa evitare le insidie della morte.

28 I n the multitude of people is the king's honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.

La moltitudine del popolo è la gloria del re, ma la scarsezza dei sudditi è la rovina del principe.

29 H e that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Chi è lento all’ira ha molto buon senso, ma chi è pronto ad andare in collera mostra la sua follia.

30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

Un cuore calmo è la vita del corpo, ma l’invidia è la carie delle ossa.

31 H e that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.

Chi opprime il povero offende colui che l’ha fatto, ma chi ha pietà del bisognoso lo onora.

32 T he wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

L’empio è travolto dalla sua sventura, ma il giusto spera anche nella morte.

33 W isdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

La saggezza riposa nel cuore dell’uomo intelligente, ma in mezzo agli stolti deve essere resa manifesta.

34 R ighteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

La giustizia innalza una nazione, ma il peccato è la vergogna dei popoli.

35 T he king's favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.

Il favore del re è per il servo prudente, ma la sua ira è per chi lo offende.
