1 B ut it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

Când Sanbalat a auzit că reconstruim zidul, s-a mâniat şi s-a supărat foarte tare. I-a batjocorit pe iudei,

2 A nd he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

zicând rudelor sale şi oştirii Samariei: – Ce fac amărâţii aceştia de iudei? Vor reface ei zidul ? Vor aduce ei jertfe? Vor isprăvi ei vreodată? Vor da ei viaţă unor pietre acoperite de grămezi de moloz şi arse de foc ?

3 N ow Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

Amonitul Tobia, care era în preajma lui, a zis: – Şi chiar dacă zidesc, până şi o vulpe, dacă se va sui pe el, le va putea dărâma zidul lor de piatră!

4 H ear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

„Ascultă -ne, Dumnezeul nostru, căci suntem dispreţuiţi! Fă să cadă jignirile lor asupra capului lor şi dă-i pradă unei ţări în care să fie captivi!

5 A nd cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

Nu le acoperi vina şi nu le şterge păcatele dinaintea Ta, căci i-au jignit pe cei ce zidesc!“

6 S o built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

Am continuat să reconstruim zidul şi l-am ridicat până la jumătate din înălţimea lui, iar poporul lucra cu inimă.

7 B ut it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

Când Sanbalat, Tobia, arabii, amoniţii şi aşdodiţii au auzit că restaurarea zidurilor Ierusalimului avansează şi că spărturile începeau să fie astupate, s-au mâniat foarte tare.

8 A nd conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

S-au aliat cu toţii ca să vină să lupte împotriva Ierusalimului şi să-i facă stricăciuni.

9 N evertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Ne-am rugat Dumnezeului nostru şi am pus o strajă ca să ne apere de ei zi şi noapte.

10 A nd Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

Însă cei din Iuda ziceau: „Puterea cărăuşilor slăbeşte, iar molozul este mult. Nu vom putea să reconstruim zidul!“

11 A nd our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

Totodată duşmanii noştri ziceau: „Nu vor şti şi nu vor vedea nimic până în clipa când vom ajunge în mijlocul lor! Îi vom ucide şi vom face astfel să înceteze lucrarea!“

12 A nd it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

Iudeii care locuiau în preajma lor au venit de zece ori şi ne-au înştiinţat despre toate locurile prin care aceştia urmau să vină împotriva noastră.

13 T herefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

Prin urmare, i-am pus pe unii din popor de-a lungul porţiunii mai joase a zidului, în locurile libere din spatele lui, aşezându-i, potrivit clanurilor lor, cu săbiile, suliţele şi arcurile în mâini.

14 A nd I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

După ce m-am uitat la toate acestea, m-am ridicat şi le-am zis nobililor, dregătorilor şi celorlalţi din popor astfel: „Nu vă temeţi de ei! Aduceţi-vă aminte de Stăpânul, Cel Care este mare şi înfricoşător, şi luptaţi pentru rudele voastre, pentru fiii voştri, pentru fiicele voastre, pentru soţiile voastre şi pentru casele voastre.“

15 A nd it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

Când duşmanii noştri au auzit că am fost înştiinţaţi, Dumnezeu le-a zădărnicit planurile, astfel încât ne-am putut întoarce cu toţii la zid, fiecare la lucrarea lui.

16 A nd it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

Din ziua aceea, jumătate din slujitorii mei lucrau, iar cealaltă jumătate dintre ei erau înarmaţi cu suliţe, cu scuturi, cu arcuri şi cu platoşe. Conducătorii se aşezaseră înapoia întregii case a lui Iuda,

17 T hey which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

care reconstruia zidul. Cei ce purtau poverile, cu o mână lucrau, iar cu cealaltă ţineau arma.

18 F or the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

Fiecare ziditor îşi avea sabia încinsă la brâu în timp ce zidea. Cel ce suna din trâmbiţă stătea lângă mine.

19 A nd I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

Le-am zis nobililor, dregătorilor şi celorlalţi din popor: „Lucrarea este mare şi întinsă, iar noi suntem împrăştiaţi pe zid, departe unii de ceilalţi.

20 I n what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

În locul în care veţi auzi sunetul trâmbiţei, acolo să vă alăturaţi nouă. Dumnezeul nostru va lupta pentru noi!“

21 S o we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

Am continuat să facem lucrarea cu jumătate dintre ei înarmaţi cu suliţe, din zorii zilei până la ivirea stelelor.

22 L ikewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

Tot în perioada aceea am mai zis poporului: „Fiecare om să înnopteze la Ierusalim împreună cu sluga lui, ca să ne slujească drept strajă noaptea, iar ziua să poată lucra!“

23 S o neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

Şi nu ne-am mai dezbrăcat de haine, nici eu, nici rudele mele, nici slujitorii mei şi nici bărbaţii care stăteau de strajă înapoia mea. Iar când mergeau la apă, fiecare avea arma la el.
