1 B y the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Pe malurile râurilor Babilonului, stăteam jos şi plângeam amintindu-ne de Sion.

2 W e hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

Ne atârnaserăm lirele în sălciile din ţinutul acela,

3 F or there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

căci acolo, cei ce ne-au înrobit ne cereau cântece, asupritorii noştri ne cereau bucurie: „Cântaţi-ne din cântecele Sionului!“

4 H ow shall we sing the Lord 's song in a strange land?

Cum să cântăm noi cântecele Domnului pe un pământ străin?

5 I f I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

Ierusalime, dacă te voi uita, să-şi uite şi dreapta mea destoinicia!

6 I f I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Limba mea să se lipească de cerul gurii mele dacă nu îmi voi aminti de tine şi dacă nu voi face din Ierusalim culmea bucuriei mele!

7 R emember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

Doamne, adu-Ţi aminte de edomiţii care, la căderea Ierusalimului, ziceau: „Radeţi! Radeţi tot până la temelie!“

8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

Fiică a Babilonului, sortită pustiirii! Ferice de acela care-ţi va răsplăti ceea ce tu ne-ai făcut!

9 H appy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

Ferice de cel ce-i va apuca pe copiii tăi şi-i va zdrobi de stâncă!
