1 W hy, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?

«Perché mai l'Onnipotente non si riserva dei tempi e quelli che lo conoscono non vedono i suoi giorni?

2 S ome remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.

Alcuni spostano i confini, prendono a forza le greggi e le portano al pascolo;

3 T hey drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

portano via l'asino degli orfani e prendono in pegno il bue della vedova:

4 T hey turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.

spingono fuori strada i bisognosi, cosí tutti i poveri del paese sono costretti a nascondersi.

5 B ehold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.

Eccoli, come onagri nel deserto escono al loro lavoro di buon mattino in cerca di cibo; il deserto fornisce cibo per loro e per i loro figli.

6 T hey reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.

Raccolgono il loro foraggio nei campi e racimolano nella vigna dell'empio

7 T hey cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.

Passano la notte nudi, senza vestiti, e non hanno di che coprirsi dal freddo.

8 T hey are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.

Bagnati dagli acquazzoni dei monti, per mancanza di riparo si stringono alle rocce.

9 T hey pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.

Altri strappano dalla mammella l'orfano e prendono pegni dai poveri.

10 T hey cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;

Costringono il povero ad andare senza vestiti e portano via i covoni dell'affamato.

11 W hich make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.

Fanno l'olio fra le mura degli empi, pigiano l'uva nei torchi, ma hanno sete.

12 M en groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.

Il gemito dei morenti sale dalla città; l'anima dei feriti implora aiuto, ma Dio non presta attenzione al male loro fatto.

13 T hey are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.

Altri si ribellano alla luce, non conoscono le sue vie e non rimangono nei suoi sentieri.

14 T he murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.

L'assassino si alza sul far del giorno, per uccidere il povero e il bisognoso; nella notte invece fa come il ladro.

15 T he eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.

L'occhio dell'adultero aspetta il crepuscolo, pensando: "Nessuno mi vedrà" e si mette un velo sulla faccia.

16 I n the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

Di notte penetrano nelle case; di giorno se ne stanno rinchiusi; non conoscono la luce.

17 F or the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

Il mattino è per loro come ombra di morte, perché essi conoscono bene i terrori dell'ombra di morte.

18 H e is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.

Passano velocemente sulla superficie delle acque, la loro porzione è maledetta sulla terra, e nessuno entrerebbe piú nelle loro vigne.

19 D rought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned.

Come la siccità e il calore consumano le acque della neve, cosí fa lo Sceol con chi ha peccato.

20 T he womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

Il grembo materno lo dimentica, i vermi ne mangiano con gusto e non sarà piú ricordato; il malvagio sarà troncato come un albero.

21 H e evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.

Egli divorava la sterile che non ha figli e non faceva alcun bene alla vedova!

22 H e draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.

Ma Dio con la sua forza trascina via i potenti e, anche se sorgono di nuovo, nessuno può essere sicuro della vita.

23 T hough it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.

Dà loro sicurezza, ed essi fanno affidamento su di essa; tuttavia i suoi occhi osservano le loro vie.

24 T hey are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

Sono innalzati per breve tempo, ma poi non sono piú; sono abbattuti e sono portati via come tutti gli altri; sono falciati come le teste delle spighe di grano.

25 A nd if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

Se cosí non è, chi potrà smentirmi e annullare il valore delle mie parole?».
