1 N ow gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

Ora, radunati insieme, o figlia di schiere. Ci hanno cinto d'Assedio; con la verga percuotono sulla guancia il giudice d'Israele.

2 B ut thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

«Ma tu, o Betlemme Efratah, anche se sei piccola fra le migliaia di Giuda, da te uscirà per me colui che sarà dominatore in Israele, le cui origini sono dai tempi antichi, dai giorni eterni».

3 T herefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.

Perciò egli li abbandonerà fino al tempo in cui colei che deve partorire, partorirà, allora il resto dei suoi fratelli ritornerà ai figli d'Israele.

4 A nd he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

Egli rimarrà a pascere il suo gregge nella forza dell'Eterno, nella maestà del nome dell'Eterno, il suo DIO. Ed essi dimoreranno al sicuro, perché allora egli sarà grande fino alle estremità della terra.

5 A nd this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

Ed egli stesso sarà la pace. Quando l'Assiro verrà nel nostro paese e metterà il piede nei nostri palazzi, noi faremo sorgere contro di lui sette pastori e otto principi fra gli uomini comuni.

6 A nd they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Essi devasteranno il paese dell'Assiria con la spada e la terra di Nimrod alle sue porte; cosí egli ci libererà dall'Assiro se verrà nel nostro paese e metterà piede nei nostri confini.

7 A nd the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.

Il resto di Giacobbe, in mezzo a molti popoli, sarà come una rugiada mandata dall'Eterno, come una fitta pioggia sull'erba, che non aspetta l'uomo e non spera nulla dai figli degli uomini.

8 A nd the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.

Il resto di Giacobbe sarà fra le nazioni, in mezzo a molti popoli, come un leone tra le bestie della foresta, come un leoncello fra greggi di pecore, il quale, se passa in mezzo, calpesta e sbrana, senza che alcuno possa liberare.

9 T hine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

La tua mano si alzerà contro i tuoi avversari e tutti i tuoi nemici saranno sterminati.

10 A nd it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots:

«In quel giorno avverrà», dice l'Eterno, «che io farò scomparire i tuoi cavalli di mezzo a te e distruggerò i tuoi carri;

11 A nd I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:

farò scomparire le città del tuo paese e abbatterò tutte le tue fortezze;

12 A nd I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:

farò scomparire dalla tua mano le arti magiche e tu non avrai piú indovini;

13 T hy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.

farò scomparire di mezzo a te le tue immagini scolpite e le tue colonne sacre, e tu non ti prostrerai piú davanti all'opera delle tue mani.

14 A nd I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.

Estirperò di mezzo a te i tuoi Ascerah e distruggerò le tue città.

15 A nd I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.

Farò vendetta con ira e con furore delle nazioni che non hanno voluto ascoltare».
