1 П існя навчальна Асафова. Послухай, мій люду, науки моєї, нахиліть своє ухо до слів моїх уст,

Give ear, O my people, to my law; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2 н ехай я відкрию уста свої приказкою, нехай стародавні прислів'я я висловлю!

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,

3 Щ о ми чули й пізнали, і що розповідали батьки наші нам,

Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.

4 т ого не сховаємо від їхніх синів, будемо розповідати про славу Господню аж до покоління останнього, і про силу Його та про чуда Його, які Він учинив!

We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

5 В ін поставив засвідчення в Якові, а Закона поклав ув ізраїлі, про які наказав був Він нашим батькам завідомити про них синів їхніх,

For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children;

6 щ об знало про це покоління майбутнє, сини, що народжені будуть, устануть і будуть розповідати своїм дітям.

That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children,

7 і положать на Бога надію свою, і не забудуть діл Божих, Його ж заповіді берегтимуть.

That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments;

8 і не стануть вони, немов їхні батьки, поколінням непокірливим та бунтівничим, поколінням, що серця свого не поставило міцно, і що дух його Богу невірний.

And may not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not set its heart aright, And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

9 С ини Єфрема, озброєні лучники, повернулися взад у день бою:

The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, Turned back in the day of battle.

10 в они не берегли заповіту Божого, а ходити в Законі Його відреклися,

They did not keep the covenant of God; They refused to walk in His law,

11 і забули вони Його чини та чуда Його, які їм показав.

And forgot His works And His wonders that He had shown them.

12 В ін чудо вчинив був для їхніх батьків ув єгипетськім краї, на полі Цоанськім:

Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13 В ін море розсік, і їх перепровадив, а воду поставив, як вал;

He divided the sea and caused them to pass through; And He made the waters stand up like a heap.

14 і провадив їх хмарою вдень, а сяйвом огню цілу ніч;

In the daytime also He led them with the cloud, And all the night with a light of fire.

15 н а пустині Він скелі розсік, і щедро усіх напоїв, як з безодні.

He split the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.

16 В ін витягнув із скелі потоки, і води текли, немов ріки.

He also brought streams out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 Т а грішили вони проти Нього ще далі, і в пустині гнівили Всевишнього,

But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.

18 і Бога вони випробовували в своїм серці, для душ своїх їжі бажаючи.

And they tested God in their heart By asking for the food of their fancy.

19 і вони говорили насупроти Бога й казали: Чи Бог зможе в пустині трапезу зготовити?

Yes, they spoke against God: They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

20 Т ож ударив у скелю і води линули, і полилися потоки! Чи Він зможе також дати хліба? Чи Він наготує м'ясива народові Своєму?

Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?”

21 Т ому то почув це Господь та й розгнівався, і огонь запалав проти Якова, і проти ізраїля теж знявся гнів,

Therefore the Lord heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel,

22 б о не вірували вони в Бога, і на спасіння Його не надіялись.

Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation.

23 А Він хмарам згори наказав, і відчинив двері неба,

Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven,

24 і спустив, немов дощ, на них манну для їжі, і збіжжя небесне їм дав:

Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven.

25 Х ліб ангольський їла людина, Він послав їм поживи до ситости!

Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full.

26 К рім цього, Він східнього вітра порушив на небі, і міццю Своєю привів полудневого вітра,

He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind.

27 і дощем на них м'ясо пустив, немов порох, а птаство крилате, як морський пісок,

He also rained meat on them like the dust, Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;

28 і спустив його серед табору його, коло наметів його.

And He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.

29 і їли вони та й наситились дуже, Він їм їхнє бажання приніс!

So they ate and were well filled, For He gave them their own desire.

30 Т а ще не вдовольнили жадання свого, ще їхня їжа була в їхніх устах,

They were not deprived of their craving; But while their food was still in their mouths,

31 а гнів Божий піднявся на них, та й побив їхніх ситих, і вибранців ізраїлевих повалив...

The wrath of God came against them, And slew the stoutest of them, And struck down the choice men of Israel.

32 П роте ще й далі грішили вони та не вірили в чуда Його,

In spite of this they still sinned, And did not believe in His wondrous works.

33 і Він докінчив у марноті їхні дні, а їхні літа у страху.

Therefore their days He consumed in futility, And their years in fear.

34 Я к Він їх побивав, то бажали Його, і верталися, й Бога шукали,

When He slew them, then they sought Him; And they returned and sought earnestly for God.

35 і пригадували, що Бог їхня скеля, і Бог Всевишній то їхній Викупитель.

Then they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.

36 і своїми устами влещували Його, а своїм язиком лжу сплітали Йому,

Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue;

37 б о їхнє серце не міцно стояло при Нім, і не були вони вірні в Його заповіті...

For their heart was not steadfast with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.

38 Т а він, Милосердний, гріх прощав і їх не губив, і часто відвертав Свій гнів, і не будив усю Свою лютість,

But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath;

39 і Він пам'ятав, що вони тільки тіло, вітер, який переходить і не повертається!

For He remembered that they were but flesh, A breath that passes away and does not come again.

40 С кільки вони прогнівляли Його на пустині, зневажали Його на степу!

How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, And grieved Him in the desert!

41 і все знову та знов випробовували вони Бога, і зневажали Святого ізраїлевого,

Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 в они не пам'ятали руки Його з дня, як Він вибавив їх із недолі,

They did not remember His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,

43 я к в Єгипті чинив Він знамена Свої, а на полі Цоанському чуда Свої,

When He worked His signs in Egypt, And His wonders in the field of Zoan;

44 і в кров обернув річки їхні та їхні потоки, щоб вони не пили...

Turned their rivers into blood, And their streams, that they could not drink.

45 В ін послав був на них рої мух, і їх жерли вони, і жаб і вони їх губили.

He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them, And frogs, which destroyed them.

46 А врожай їхній віддав був Він гусені, а їхню працю сарані.

He also gave their crops to the caterpillar, And their labor to the locust.

47 В иноград їхній Він градом побив, а приморозком їхні шовковиці.

He destroyed their vines with hail, And their sycamore trees with frost.

48 і Він градові віддав їхній скот, а блискавкам череди їхні.

He also gave up their cattle to the hail, And their flocks to fiery lightning.

49 В ін послав був на них Свій гнів запальний, і лютість, й обурення, й утиск, наслання злих анголів.

He cast on them the fierceness of His anger, Wrath, indignation, and trouble, By sending angels of destruction among them.

50 В ін дорогу зрівняв був для гніву Свого, їхні душі не стримав від смерти, життя ж їхнє віддав моровиці.

He made a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But gave their life over to the plague,

51 і побив Він усіх перворідних в Єгипті, первістків сили в наметах Хамових.

And destroyed all the firstborn in Egypt, The first of their strength in the tents of Ham.

52 і повів Він, немов ту отару, народ Свій, і їх попровадив, як стадо, в пустині.

But He made His own people go forth like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;

53 і провадив безпечно Він їх, і вони не боялись, а море накрило було ворогів їхніх.

And He led them on safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 і Він їх привів до границі святині Своєї, до тієї гори, що правиця Його набула.

And He brought them to His holy border, This mountain which His right hand had acquired.

55 і народи Він повиганяв перед їхнім обличчям, і кинув для них жеребка про спадок, і в їхніх наметах племена ізраїлеві оселив.

He also drove out the nations before them, Allotted them an inheritance by survey, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

56 Т а й далі вони випробовували та гнівили Всевишнього Бога, і Його постанов не додержували,

Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, And did not keep His testimonies,

57 і відступали та зраджували, немов їхні батьки відвернулись, як обманливий лук.

But turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers; They were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58 і жертівниками своїми гнівили Його, і дрочили Його своїми фіґурами.

For they provoked Him to anger with their high places, And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.

59 Б ог почув усе це і розгнівався, і сильно обридивсь ізраїлем,

When God heard this, He was furious, And greatly abhorred Israel,

60 і покинув оселю в Шіло, скинію ту, що вмістив був посеред людей,

So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

61 і віддав до неволі Він силу Свою, а величність Свою в руку ворога...

And delivered His strength into captivity, And His glory into the enemy’s hand.

62 і віддав для меча Свій народ, і розгнівався був на спадщину Свою:

He also gave His people over to the sword, And was furious with His inheritance.

63 й ого юнаків огонь пожирав, а дівчатам його не співали весільних пісень,

The fire consumed their young men, And their maidens were not given in marriage.

64 й ого священики від меча полягли, і не плакали вдови його.

Their priests fell by the sword, And their widows made no lamentation.

65 Т а небавом збудився Господь, немов зо сну, як той велет, що ніби вином був підкошений,

Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, Like a mighty man who shouts because of wine.

66 і вдарив Своїх ворогів по озадку, вічну ганьбу їм дав!

And He beat back His enemies; He put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Т а Він погордив намет Йосипів, і племена Єфремового не обрав,

Moreover He rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

68 а вибрав Собі плем'я Юдине, гору Сіон, що її полюбив!

But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved.

69 і святиню Свою збудував Він, як місце високе, як землю, що навіки її вґрунтував.

And He built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has established forever.

70 і вибрав Давида, Свого раба, і від кошар його взяв,

He also chose David His servant, And took him from the sheepfolds;

71 в ід кітних овечок його Він привів, щоб Якова пас він, народа Свого, та ізраїля, спадок Свій,

From following the ewes that had young He brought him, To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance.

72 і він пас їх у щирості серця свого, і провадив їх мудрістю рук своїх!

So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.
