1 T hen I saw all the bad powers that were ruling under the sun. I saw the tears of the people who were suffering under these powers, with no one to comfort them. Those who made it hard for them had the power. But the people had no one to comfort them.

Mi sono quindi messo a considerare tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole, ed ecco, le lacrime degli oppressi, i quali non hanno chi li consoli; dal lato dei loro oppressori c'era la forza, ma neppure essi hanno chi li consoli.

2 S o I thought that those who are already dead are better off than those who are still living.

Per cui ho ritenuto i morti, che sono già morti, piú felici dei vivi che sono ancora in vita;

3 B ut better than both is the one who has never been, who has never seen the wrong that is done under the sun.

ma ancor piú felice degli uni e degli altri, colui che non è mai esistito e non ha ancora visto le azioni malvagie che si commettono sotto il sole.

4 I have seen that all the work done is because a man wants what his neighbor has. This also is for nothing, like trying to catch the wind.

Ho pure visto che ogni fatica e ogni successo nel lavoro risultano in invidia dell'uno contro l'altro. Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

5 T he fool folds his hands and has no food to eat.

Lo stolto incrocia le braccia e divora la propria carne.

6 O ne hand full of rest is better than two hands full of work and trying to catch the wind.

Val piú una manciata con riposo che due manciate con fatica, cercando di afferrare il vento.

7 T hen I looked again at what is of no use under the sun.

Ho visto anche un'altra vanità sotto il sole:

8 T here was a certain man who lived alone. He did not have a son or a brother. Yet he worked all the time. His eyes were never happy with the riches he had, and he never asked, “For whom am I working and why am I keeping myself from happiness?” This also is for nothing. It is work that brings sorrow. uno è completamente solo e non ha né figlio né fratello, eppure la sua fatica non ha fine e i suoi occhi non sono sazi di ricchezze. Ma non si chiede: «Per chi mi affatico e mi privo di ogni bene?». Anche questo è vanità e una fatica penosa.

9 T wo are better than one, because they have good pay for their work.

Due valgon meglio di uno solo, perché hanno una buona ricompensa per la loro fatica.

10 F or if one of them falls, the other can help him up. But it is hard for the one who falls when there is no one to lift him up.

Se infatti cadono, l'uno rialza l'altro; ma guai a chi è solo e cade, perché non ha nessun altro che lo rialzi!

11 A nd if two lie down together, they keep warm. But how can one be warm alone?

Cosí pure se due dormono assieme si possono riscaldare; ma uno solo come farà a riscaldarsi?

12 O ne man is able to have power over him who is alone, but two can stand against him. It is not easy to break a rope made of three strings.

Se uno può sopraffare chi è solo, due gli possono resistere; una corda a tre capi non si rompe tanto presto.

13 A poor and wise boy is better than an old and foolish king who will no longer listen to words of wisdom.

E' meglio un giovane povero e saggio che un re vecchio e stolto, che non sa piú ricevere ammonimenti.

14 A man can come out of prison to become king, even if he was born poor in his nation.

Poiché il giovane è uscito di prigione per regnare, anche se era nato povero nel suo regno.

15 I have seen all the living under the sun gather to the side of the boy who becomes king in his place.

Ho visto tutti i viventi che camminano sotto il sole unirsi al giovane, che va a mettersi al posto dell'altro.

16 T here was no end to all the people. He ruled over all of them. Yet those who come later will not be happy with him. For this also is for nothing, like trying to catch the wind.

Era innumerevole tutto il popolo, tutti quelli che erano stati prima di loro. Tuttavia quelli che verranno dopo non saranno contenti di lui! Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.
