1 J osiah was eight years old when he became king. He ruled for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

Giosia aveva otto anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Jedidah, figlia di Adaiah di Botskath.

2 J osiah did what is right in the eyes of the Lord. He walked in all the way of his father David. He did not turn aside to the right or to the left. Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law

3 I n the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan the writer, the son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, to the house of the Lord. He said,

4 “ Go up to Hilkiah the head religious leader, that he may add up the money brought into the Lord’s house which the door-keepers have gathered from the people.

«Sali dal sommo sacerdote Hilkiah e digli che metta assieme il denaro che è stato portato nella casa dell'Eterno e che i portinai hanno raccolto dal popolo,

5 L et the money be given to the workmen who are watching over the work on the Lord’s house. And let them give it to the workmen who are doing the work on the Lord’s house.

Lo si consegni nelle mani di coloro che fanno il lavoro, a cui è affidata la sorveglianza della casa dell'Eterno; e questi lo consegnino agli operai che sono nella casa dell'Eterno per riparare i guasti del tempio:

6 H ave them pay the builders and the men who work with wood and with stone. Have them use it for buying wood and cut stone needed to work on the house.

ai falegnami, ai costruttori e ai muratori, e per comprare legname e pietre squadrate, necessarie per riparare il tempio.

7 B ut do not make them tell you how the money was spent that was given to them. For they are honest men.”

Ma non si chieda loro alcun conto del denaro consegnato nelle loro mani, perché agiscono con fedeltà».

8 T hen Hilkiah the head religious leader said to Shaphan the writer, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

Allora il sommo sacerdote Hilkiah disse a Shafan, il segretario: «Ho trovato nella casa dell'Eterno il libro della legge». Hilkiah diede quindi il libro a Shafan, che lo lesse.

9 T hen Shaphan the writer came to the king and told him, “Your servants have taken all the money found in the house. And they have given it to the workmen who are watching over the work on the Lord’s house.”

Cosí Shafan, il segretario, andò dal re a riferire la cosa, dicendo: «I tuoi servi hanno raccolto il denaro trovato nel tempio e l'hanno consegnato nelle mani di coloro che fanno il lavoro, a cui è affidata la sorveglianza della casa dell'Eterno».

10 T hen Shaphan the writer told the king, “Hilkiah the religious leader has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in front of the king.

Inoltre Shafan, il segretario, riferì al re: «Il sacerdote Hilkiah mi ha dato un libro». E Shafan lo lesse alla presenza del re.

11 W hen the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.

Or avvenne che, quando il re udì le parole del libro della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

12 T hen he told Hilkiah the religious leader, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the writer, and Asaiah the king’s servant,

Poi il re ordinò al sacerdote Hilkiah ad Ahikam figlio di Shafan, ad Akbor figlio di Mikaiah, a Shafan il segretario e ad Asaiah servo del re:

13 “ Go, ask the Lord for me and all Judah about the words of this book that has been found. For the Lord is very angry with us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book. They have not done all that is written for us to do.”

«Andate a consultare l'Eterno per me, per il popolo e per tutto Giuda, riguardo alle parole di questo libro che è stato trovato; poiché grande è l'ira dell'Eterno che si è accesa contro di noi perché i nostri padri non hanno ubbidito alle parole di questo libro e non hanno agito in conformità a tutto ciò che è scritto per noi».

14 S o Hilkiah the religious leader, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to Huldah the woman who spoke for God. She was the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, and watched over the clothes of the house. (She lived in the Second Part of Jerusalem.) They spoke to her.

Allora il sacerdote Hilkiah, Ahikam, Akbor, Shafan e Asaiah andarono dalla profetessa Huldah, moglie di Shallum figlio di Tikvah, figlio di Harhas, il guardarobiere, (ella abitava a Gerusalemme nel secondo quartiere), e parlarono con lei.

15 S he said to them, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says. Tell the man who sent you to me

Ella rispose loro: «Così dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Riferite a colui che vi ha mandati da me:

16 t hat the Lord says, ‘See, I will bring trouble upon this place and upon its people. All the words of the book which the king of Judah has read will come true

"Cosi dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io farò venire una sciagura su questo luogo e sui suoi abitanti, tutte le parole del libro che il re di Giuda ha letto,

17 b ecause they have turned away from Me and have burned special perfume to other gods. They have made Me angry with all the work of their hands. So My anger burns against this place, and it will not be stopped.’

perché essi mi hanno abbandonato e hanno bruciato incenso ad altri dèi per provocarmi ad ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani. Perciò la mia ira si è accesa contro questo luogo e non si spegnerà".

18 B ut tell the king of Judah who sent you to ask of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words you have heard.

Ma al re di Giuda che vi ha mandato a consultare l'Eterno, gli direte questo: "Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: riguardo alle parole che tu hai udito,

19 “ You heard how I spoke against this place and against its people. I said that they should be destroyed and laid waste. They should be hated and destroyed. But when you heard this, you were sorry in your heart. You put away your pride before the Lord. You have torn your clothes and cried before Me, and I have heard you,” says the Lord.

poiché il tuo cuore si è intenerito e ti sei umiliato davanti all'Eterno quando hai udito ciò che ho detto contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, che sarebbero divenuti una desolazione e una maledizione, e ti sei stracciato le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch'io ti ho ascoltato", dice l'Eterno.

20 “ So I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the trouble which I will bring upon this place.”’” So they returned to the king and told him what was said.

"Perciò, ecco, io ti riunirò ai tuoi padri e sarai deposto in pace nel tuo sepolcro; e i tuoi occhi non vedranno tutto il male che io farò venire su questo luogo"». E quelli riferirono il messaggio al re.
