1 A ll the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings by the sea heard how the Lord had dried up the water of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed. And their hearts became weak. There was no spirit in them any more because of the people of Israel.

Quando tutti i re degli Amorei che erano di là dal Giordano verso ovest e tutti i re dei Cananei che erano presso il mare vennero a sapere che l'Eterno aveva prosciugato le acque del Giordano davanti ai figli d'Israele finché furono passati il loro cuore venne meno e non rimase piú in loro alcun coraggio di fronte ai figli d'Israele.

2 T hen the Lord said to Joshua, “Make knives for yourselves out of hard stone. And cut the piece of skin from the sex part of the sons of Israel as before.”

In quel tempo l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Fatti dei coltelli di pietra e torna di nuovo a circoncidere i figli d'Israele».

3 S o Joshua made knives of hard stone. Then he had the sons of Israel go through this religious act at Gibeath-haaraloth.

Così Giosuè si fece dei coltelli di pietra e circoncise i figli d'Israele sul colle di Haaraloth.

4 T his is the reason why Joshua had them go through this religious act. All the males who had come out of Egypt, all the soldiers, had died in the desert on the way from Egypt.

Questo fu il motivo per cui Giosuè li circoncise: tutto il popolo che era uscito dall'Egitto, i maschi, tutti gli uomini di guerra, erano morti nel deserto lungo la strada, dopo essere usciti dall'Egitto.

5 A ll the people who came out went through this religious act. But all the people who were born in the desert on the way from Egypt had not gone through this religious act.

Mentre tutto il popolo uscito dall'Egitto era circonciso, tutto il popolo nato nel deserto, lungo la strada dopo l'uscita dall'Egitto, non era stato circonciso.

6 F or the people of Israel walked forty years in the desert, until all the men of war who came out of Egypt died, because they did not listen to the voice of the Lord. The Lord had promised them that He would not let them see the land He had promised to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Infatti i figli d'Israele avevano camminato quarant'anni nel deserto finché tutto il popolo, cioè gi uomini di guerra che erano usciti dall'Egitto, furono distrutti, perché non avevano ubbidito alla voce dell'Eterno. Ad essi l'Eterno aveva giurato che non avrebbe fatto loro vedere il paese che aveva giurato ai loro padri di darci, un paese dove scorre latte e miele.

7 S o Joshua went through the religious act on their children, whom the Lord raised up in their place. For they had not gone through this religious act along the way.

Così Giosuè circoncise i loro figli, che Dio aveva suscitato al loro posto, perché erano incirconcisi, non essendo stati circoncisi lungo la strada.

8 W hen the whole nation had gone through this religious act, they stayed in their places among the tents until they were healed.

Quando si finì di circoncidere tutto il popolo, essi rimasero al loro posto nello accampamento, finché furono guariti.

9 T hen the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the shame of Egypt.” So the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.

Allora l'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Oggi ho rimosso da voi il vituperio d'Egitto», e quel luogo fu chiamato Ghilgal fino a questo giorno.

10 T he people of Israel stayed at Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the desert plains of Jericho.

I figli d'Israele si accamparono a Ghilgal e celebrarono la Pasqua il quattordicesimo giorno del mese, sull'imbrunire, nelle pianure di Gerico.

11 O n the very next day after the Passover, they ate some of the food of the land. They ate bread without yeast, and dry grain.

Il giorno dopo la Pasqua mangiarono dei prodotti del paese, pane azzimo e grano arrostito in quello stesso giorno.

12 T he bread from heaven stopped on the day after they had eaten some of the food of the land. So the people of Israel no longer had bread from heaven. But they ate food of the land of Canaan during that year.

Il giorno dopo che ebbero mangiato dei prodotti del paese, la manna cessò; così i figli d'Israele non ebbero piú manna, ma quell'anno mangiarono dei frutti del paese di Canaan.

13 W hen Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing near him with his sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said, “Are you for us or for those who hate us?”

Or avvenne che, mentre Giosuè era presso Gerico, alzò gli occhi e guardò, ed ecco un uomo gli stava davanti, con in mano la sua spada sguainata. Giosuè gli andò incontro e gli disse: «Sei tu per noi o per i nostri nemici?».

14 “ No,” He said, “I have now come as Captain of the army of the Lord.” Joshua fell on his face to the ground and worshiped, and said to Him, “What has my Lord to say to His servant?”

Egli rispose: «No, io sono il capo dell'esercito dell'Eterno; arrivo in questo momento». Allora Giosuè cadde con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e gli disse: «Che cosa vuol dire il mio Signore al suo servo?».

15 T he Captain of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your shoes off your feet. For the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Il capo dell'esercito dell'Eterno disse a Giosuè: «Togliti i sandali dai piedi, perché il luogo dove stai è santo». E Giosuè fece così.
