1 I saac was now old, and had become blind. He called to his older son Esau, saying, “My son.” And Esau answered, “Here I am.”

Quando Isacco era divento vecchio e i suoi occhi erano così deboli che non vedeva piú, egli chiese Esaú, suo figlio maggiore, e gli disse: «Figlio mio!».

2 I saac said, “See, I am old. I do not know when I will die.

Egli disse: «Eccomi!». Allora Isacco disse: Ecco, io sono vecchio e non conosco il giorno della mia morte.

3 T ake your bow and arrows, and go out to the field to get meat for me.

Deh, prendi ora le tue armi, il tuo turcasso e il tuo arco, esci fuori nei campi e prendi per me della selvaggina;

4 G et some food ready for me that I love. Bring it to me to eat, so that before I die I will pray that good will come to you.”

poi preparami una pietanza saporita di quelle che mi piacciono, e portamela, perché io ne mangi e l'anima mia ti benedica prima che io muoia».

5 A nd Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for meat to bring home,

Ora Rebecca stava ad ascoltare, mentre Isacco parlava a Esaú suo figlio. Così Esaú andò nei campi a cacciare selvaggina per portarla a suo padre.

6 R ebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father talking to your brother Esau. He said,

Allora Rebecca parló a Giacobbe suo figlio e gli disse: Ecco, io ho udito tuo padre che parlava a Esaú tuo fratello egli diceva:

7 ’ Bring me some meat. Make good-tasting food for me to eat. And before I die I will pray to the Lord for good to come to you.’

«portami della selvaggina e preparami una pietanza saporita, perché io ne mangi e ti benedica alla presenza dell'Eterno, prima che io muoia».

8 S o now, my son, listen to what I tell you to do.

Or dunque, figlio mio, ubbudisci alla mia voce e fa' quello che io ti comando.

9 G o to the flock and bring me two fat young goats. I will cook them into good-tasting food, just what your father loves to eat.

Va' ora al gregge e portami due bei capretti; e io ne faró una pietanza saporita per tuo padre, di quelle che gli piacciono.

10 T hen you will take it to your father for him to eat. So before he dies he will pray for good to come to you.”

Poi tu la porterai a tuo padre, perché la mangi, e così ti benedica prima di morire».

11 J acob said to his mother Rebekah, “But my brother Esau has much hair. And my skin is smooth.

Giacobbe disse a Rebecca sua madre: «Ecco, Esaú mio fratello é peloso, mentre io ho la pelle liscia.

12 I f my father touches me, he will think of me as one trying to fool him. Then he will bring a curse upon me instead of good.”

Può darsi che mio padre mi tasti; sembrerò a lui un ingannatore, e mi trarró addosso una maledizione invece di una benedizione».

13 H is mother said to him, “The curse will come upon me instead of you, my son. You do what I say, and go get them for me.”

Ma sua madre gli rispose: «Questa maledizione ricada su di me, figlio mio! Ubbidisci soltanto a ciò che ho detto e va' a prendere i capretti».

14 S o Jacob went and got them, and brought them to his mother. And his mother made good-tasting food, just what his father loved to eat.

Egli dunque andò a prenderli e li portò da sua madre; e sua madre ne preparò una pietanza saporita, di quelle che piacevano a suo padre.

15 T hen Rebekah took the best clothes that belonged to her older son Esau, that were with her in the house. And she put them on her younger son Jacob.

Poi Rebecca prese il piú bel vestito di Esaú, suo figlio maggiore, che teneva in casa presso di sé, e lo fece indossare a Giacobbe suo figlio minore;

16 S he put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

e con le pelli dei capretti rivestì le sue mani e la parte liscia del suo collo.

17 A nd she gave her son Jacob the bread and the good-tasting food she had made.

Quindi mise in mano a Giacobbe suo figlio la pietanza saporita e il pane che aveva preparato.

18 T hen he went to his father and said, “My father.” Isaac said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

Allora egli andò da suo padre e gli disse: «Padre mio!». Isacco rispose: «Eccomi; chi sei tu, figlio mio?».

19 J acob said to his father, “I am Esau, your first-born. I have done as you told me. Sit up and eat the meat I brought, so you will pray that good will come to me.”

Allora Giacobbe disse a suo padre: «Sono Esaú, il tuo primogenito. Ho fatto come tu mi hai detto. Deh, alzati mettiti a sedere e mangia della mia cacciagione, affinché l'anima tua mi benedica».

20 B ut Isaac said to his son, “How have you found it so fast, my son?” And Jacob said, “Because the Lord your God made it happen.”

Ma Isacco disse a suo figlio: «Come hai fatto a trovarne così presto, figlio mio?». Egli rispose: «Perché l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, l'ha fatta venire a me».

21 T hen Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know for sure if you are my son Esau or not.”

Allora Isacco disse a Giacobbe: «Avvicinati e lascia che ti palpi, figlio mio, per sapere se sei proprio mio figlio Esaú, o no».

22 S o Jacob came near his father Isaac. Isaac touched him, and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice. But the hands are Esau’s hands.”

Giacobbe dunque si avvicinò a Isacco suo padre; e, come questi lo ebbe palpato disse: «La voce è la voce di Giacobbe, ma le mani sono le mani di Esaú».

23 H e did not know who he was, because his hands were covered with hair like his brother Esau’s hands. So Isaac prayed that good would come to him.

Così non lo riconobbe, perché le mani di lui erano pelose come le mani di Esaú suo fratello; e lo benedisse.

24 I saac said, “Is it true that you are my son Esau?” Jacob answered, “I am.”

E disse: «Sei tu veramente mio figlio Esaú?». Egli rispose: «Si».

25 S o Isaac said, “Bring it to me so I may eat the meat my son has made ready. And I will pray that good will come to you.” He brought it to him, and he ate. He brought him wine also, and he drank.

Allora Isacco gli disse: «Servimi affinché io mangi della cacciagione di mio figlio e l'anima mia ti benedica». Così Giacobbe lo servì e Isacco mangiò. Giacobbe gli portò anche del vino ed egli bevve.

26 T hen his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.”

Poi suo padre Isacco gli disse: «Ora avvicinati e baciami, figlio mio».

27 S o Jacob came near and kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothes, he prayed that good would come to him. He said, “The smell of my son is like the smell of a field that has received good from the Lord.

Ed egli si avvicinò e lo baciò. E Isacco sentì l'odore dei suoi vestiti e lo benedisse dicendo: «ecco, l'odore di mio figlio è come l'odore di un campo, che l'Eterno ha benedetto.

28 M ay God give you from heaven water on the grass in the early morning, and the riches of the earth, and more than enough grain and new wine.

DIO ti dia la rugiada dei cieli e la fertilità della terra e abbondanza di frumento e di vino.

29 M ay nations serve you, and the people bow down in front of you. Be the ruler of your brothers. May your mother’s sons bow down in front of you. Cursed be those who curse you, and may good come to those who honor you.”

Ti servano i popoli e le nazioni si inchinino davanti a te. Sii padrone dei tuoi fratelli e i figli di tua madre si inchinino davanti a te. Maledetto sia chiunque ti maledice, benedetto sia chiunque ti benedice!».

30 W hen Isaac had finished praying that good would come to Jacob, Jacob left his father Isaac. Just then his brother Esau came in from hunting.

E avvenne che, come Isacco ebbe finito di benedire Giacobbe e Giacobbe si era appena allontanato dalla presenza di suo padre Isacco, Esaú suo fratello rientrò dalla caccia.

31 T hen Esau made good-tasting food and brought it to his father, and said, “Sit up, my father, and eat the meat your son has made ready, so you will pray that good will come to me.”

Anch'egli preparò una pietanza saporita, la portò a suo padre e gli disse: «Si alzi mio padre e mangi della caccia di suo figlio, affinché l'anima tua mi benedica».

32 H is father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your first-born, Esau.”

Isacco suo padre gli disse: «Chi sei tu?». Egli rispose: Sono Esaú, il tuo figlio primogenito».

33 T hen Isaac shook all over, and he said, “Who was it then who killed an animal and brought meat to me? I ate all of it before you came! And I prayed that good would come to him! Yes, and good will come to him!”

Allora Isacco fu preso da un tremito fortissimo e disse: «Chi è dunque colui che ha cacciato della selvaggina e me l'ha portata? Io ho mangiato tutto prima che tu venissi e l'ho benedetto; benedetto egli resterà».

34 W hen he heard what his father said, Esau cried out with a loud and sad cry. He said to his father, “Pray that good will come to me also, O my father!”

All'udire le parole di suo padre, Esaú diede un grido forte ed amarissimo. Poi disse a suo padre: «Benedici anche me, padre mio!».

35 B ut Isaac said, “Your brother came in and fooled me. He has taken away the good that was to come to you.”

Ma Isacco rispose: «Tuo fratello è venuto con inganno e si è presa la tua benedizione».

36 T hen Esau said, “Was it not right that he was given the name Jacob? Two times now he has taken what should have been mine. He took away my right as a first-born. And now he has taken away the good that was to come to me.” Then he said, “Can you not pray that good will come to me also?”

Esaú disse: «Non è a ragione chiamato Giacobbe? Egli mi ha soppiantato già due volte: mi tolse la primogenitura, ed ecco ora si è presa la mia benedizione». Poi aggiunse: Non hai tu riservato una benedizione per me?».

37 I saac answered Esau, “See, I have made him to rule over you. I have given him all his brothers as servants. I have given him grain and new wine to keep him alive and well. What then can I do for you, my son?”

Allora Isacco rispose e disse a Esaú: «Ecco, io l'ho costituito tuo padrone e gli ho dato tutti i suoi fratelli per servi, e l'ho provvisto di frumento e di vino; che potrò fare per te, figlio mio?».

38 E sau said to his father, “Do you have only one prayer for good to come, my father? Pray that good will come to me also, O my father.” And Esau gave out a loud cry.

Esaú disse a suo padre: «Non hai tu che questa benedizione, padre mio? Benedici anche me, o padre mio!». Ed Esaú alzò la voce e pianse.

39 T hen his father Isaac answered him: “See, the place where you live will be away from the riches of the earth, and away from the water on the grass in the early morning.

Isacco suo padre rispose e gli disse: «Ecco, la tua dimora sarà priva della fertilità della terra e della rugiada che scenderà dall'alto dei cieli.

40 Y ou will live by your sword and you will serve your brother. But when you break loose, you will throw his load off your back.” Jacob Goes to Laban

Tu vivrai della tua spada e sarai servo di tuo fratello; ma avverrà che, quando combatterai, spezzerai il suo giogo dal tuo collo».

41 E sau hated Jacob because his father had prayed that good would come to Jacob. Esau said to himself, “The days when I will have sorrow for the loss of my father are soon. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

Così Esaú prese a odiare Giacobbe a motivo della benedizione datagli da suo padre, e disse in cuor suo: «I giorni del lutto per mio padre si avvicinano; allora ucciderò mio fratello Giacobbe»

42 B ut the words of her older son Esau were told to Rebekah. She called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “See, your brother Esau comforts himself by planning to kill you.

Quando le parole di Esaú, suo figlio maggiore, furono riferite a Rebecca, ella mandò a chiamare Giacobbe, suo figlio minore, e gli disse: «Ecco, Esaú, tuo fratello, si consola nei tuoi riguardi, pensando di ucciderti.

43 S o now, my son, do what I tell you. Get ready, and go at once to my brother Laban at Haran.

Or dunque, figlio mio, ubbidisci fai ciò che ti dico: Alzati e fuggi a Haran da Labano mio fratello;

44 S tay with him for a few days, until your brother’s anger goes away.

e rimani con lui un po' di tempo, finché la collera di tuo fratello sia passata,

45 W hen your brother’s anger against you is gone and he forgets what you did to him, then I will send for you and have you return from there. Why should I have sorrow for both of you in one day?”

finché l'ira di tuo fratello sia distolta da te ed egli abbia dimenticato quello che tu gli hai fatto; allora io manderò a prenderti di là. Perché dovrei io essere privata di voi due in un sol giorno».

46 T hen Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of living because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob marries one of the daughters of Heth, like these, from the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Poi Rebecca disse ad Isacco: «Io sono disgustata della vita a motivo di queste figlie di Heth. Se Giacobbe prende in moglie una tra le figlie di Heth, una donna come quelle del paese, a che mi servirà la vita?».
