1 I n the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Or avvenne nel quarto anno di Jehoiakim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, che questa parola fu rivolta dall'Eterno a Geremia, dicendo:

2 “ Take a book and write in it all the words which I have said to you about Israel, Judah, and all the nations. Write all I have said since the day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today.

«Prenditi un rotolo da scrivere e scrivi su di esso tutte le parole che ti ho detto contro Israele, contro Giuda e contro tutte le nazioni, dal giorno in cui ti ho parlato, dai giorni di Giosia, fino a questo giorno.

3 I t may be that the house of Judah will hear all the trouble I am planning to bring on them, so that everyone will turn from his sinful way. Then I will forgive their wrong-doing and their sin.”

Forse la casa di Giuda udrà tutto il male che io penso di far loro e si ritrarrà ciascuno dalla propria via malvagia, e cosí io perdonerò la loro iniquità e il loro peccato».

4 S o Jeremiah called Baruch, the son of Neriah. And Baruch wrote in the book all the words which Jeremiah told him that the Lord had said to him.

Allora Geremia chiamò Baruka, figlio di Neriah e Baruk scrisse su un rotolo per scrivere, sotto dettatura di Geremia, tutte le parole che l'Eterno gli aveva detto.

5 T hen Jeremiah said to Baruch, “I am shut up here and cannot go into the house of the Lord.

Poi Geremia diede quest'ordine a Baruk: «Io sono impedito e non posso entrare nella casa dell'Eterno.

6 S o you go to the Lord’s house on the special day of no food, and read to the people the words of the Lord which you have written down as I told them to you. And also read them to all the people of Judah who come from their cities.

Perciò andrai tu a leggere, dal rotolo che hai scritto sotto mia dettatura, le parole dell'Eterno, negli orecchi del popolo nella casa dell'Eterno, nel giorno del digiuno; le leggerai anche negli orecchi di tutti quelli di Giuda che vengono dalle loro città.

7 I t may be that their prayer will come before the Lord, and everyone will turn from his sinful way. For the punishment that the Lord said would come to these people because of His anger is very bad.”

Forse presenteranno le loro suppliche all'Eterno e si ritrarrà ciascuno dalla propria via malvagia, perché grande è l'ira e il furore che l'Eterno ha pronunciato contro questo popolo».

8 B aruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the man of God told him. He read from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.

Baruk quindi, figlio di Neriah, fece secondo tutto ciò che gli aveva comandato il profeta Geremia e lesse dal libro le parole dell'Eterno.

9 I n the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, all the people in Jerusalem and all those from the cities of Judah set apart to the Lord a day when they would not eat.

Nel quinto anno di Jehoiakim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, nel nono mese, fu proclamato un digiuno davanti all'Eterno per tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme, e per tutto il popolo venuto dalle città di Giuda a Gerusalemme.

10 T hen Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah to all the people in the house of the Lord, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the writer, in the upper place by the New Gate of the Lord’s house. The Book Is Read to the Leaders

Allora Baruk lesse dal libro le parole di Geremia agli orecchi di tutto il popolo, nella casa dell'Eterno, nella camera di Ghemariah, figlio di Shafan lo scriba, nel cortile superiore, all'ingresso della Porta Nuova della casa dell'Eterno.

11 W hen Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the Lord from the book,

Mikaiah, figlio di Ghemariah, figlio di Shafan, udí tutte le parole dell'Eterno lette dal libro.

12 h e went down to the king’s house, into the writer’s room. And he saw that all the leaders were sitting there. There was Elishama the writer, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other leaders.

Scese quindi alla casa del re, nella camera dello scriba, ed ecco là stavano seduti tutti i principi: Elishama lo scriba, Delaiah figlio di Scemaiah, Elnathan figlio di Akbor, Ghemariah figlio di Shafan, Sedekia figlio di Hananiah, e tutti gli altri principi.

13 A nd Micaiah told them all that he had heard Baruch read to the people from the book.

Mikaiah riferí loro tutte le parole che aveva udito mentre Baruk leggeva il libro agli orecchi del popolo.

14 T hen all the leaders sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take the book you have read to the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the book in his hand and went to them.

Allora tutti i principi mandarono Jehudi, figlio di Nethaniah, figlio di Scelemiah, figlio di Kusci a Baruk per dirgli: «Prendi in mano il rotolo dal quale hai letto agli orecchi del popolo e vieni». Cosí Baruk, figlio di Neriah, prese in mano il rotolo e venne da loro.

15 T hey told him, “Sit down and read it to us.” So Baruch read it to them.

Essi gli dissero: «Siediti e leggilo davanti a noi». E Baruk lo lesse ai loro orecchi.

16 W hen they had heard all the words, they turned in fear to one another and said to Baruch, “For sure we will tell all these words to the king.”

Quando udirono tutte quelle parole, ebbero paura e guardandosi l'un l'altro, dissero a Baruk: «Dobbiamo senz'altro riferire tutte queste parole al re».

17 A nd they asked Baruch, “Tell us, how did you write all this? Did Jeremiah tell it to you?”

Poi chiesero a Baruk, dicendo: «Dicci ora come hai scritto tutte queste parole: sotto sua dettatura?».

18 B aruch said to them, “He told me all these words, and I wrote them down in the book.”

Baruk rispose loro: «Egli mi ha dettato tutte queste parole con la sua stessa bocca, e io le ho scritte con inchiostro nel libro».

19 T hen the leaders said to Baruch, “Go and hide, both you and Jeremiah. And do not let anyone know where you are.” The King Burns Jeremiah’s Book

Allora i principi dissero a Baruk: «Va' e nasconditi assieme a Geremia, e nessuno sappia dove siete».

20 S o they went to the king in the open space, but they had put the book in the room of Elishama the writer. And they told all the words to the king.

Poi andarono dal re, nel cortile dopo aver riposto il rotolo nella camera di Elishama lo scriba, e riferirono al re tutte quelle parole.

21 T hen the king sent Jehudi to get the book, and he took it out of the room of Elishama the writer. And Jehudi read it to the king and to all the leaders who stood beside him.

Allora il re mandò Jehudi a prendere il rotolo; ed egli lo prese dalla camera di Elishama lo scriba. Quindi Jehudi lo lesse agli orecchi del re e agli orecchi di tutti i principi che stavano presso il re.

22 I t was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house with a fire burning in the fireplace in front of him.

Ora il re stava seduto nel suo palazzo d'inverno, (era il nono mese), con un braciere che ardeva davanti a lui.

23 W hen Jehudi had read three or four parts, the king cut them with a small knife and threw them into the fire in the fireplace. He did this until the book was destroyed in the fire.

Quando Jehudi ne ebbe letto tre o quattro colonne, il re lo tagliò col coltellino da scriba e lo gettò nel fuoco che era nel braciere, finché il rotolo fu interamente consumato dal fuoco che era nel braciere.

24 T he king and all his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, and they did not tear their clothes.

Né il re né alcuno dei suoi servi che udirono tutte queste parole si spaventarono o si stracciarono le vesti.

25 E lnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the book, but he would not listen to them.

E sebbene Elnathan, Delaiah e Ghemariah supplicassero il re perché non bruciasse il rotolo, egli non volle ascoltarli.

26 A nd the king told Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to take hold of Baruch the writer and Jeremiah the man of God. But the Lord had hidden them. Jeremiah Writes Another Book

Anzi il re ordinò a Jerahmeel figlio del re, a Seraiah, figlio di Azriel e a Scelemiah, figlio di Abdel di prendere Baruk lo scriba e il profeta Geremia. Ma l'Eterno li nascose.

27 N ow the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the book with the words Jeremiah had told Baruch to write down. The Lord said,

Dopo che il re ebbe bruciato il rotolo e le parole che Baruk aveva scritto sotto dettatura di Geremia, la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Geremia, dicendo:

28 “ Take another book and write in it all the words that were in the first book which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned.

«Prenditi di nuovo un altro rotolo e scrivi su di esso tutte le parole di prima, che erano nel primo rotolo bruciato da Jehoiakim, re di Giuda.

29 A nd about Jehoiakim the king of Judah you will say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You have burned this book, saying, ‘Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will be sure to come and destroy this land and put an end to every man and animal in it?’”

E a Jehoiakim, re di Giuda, dirai: Cosí dice l'Eterno: Tu hai bruciato questo rotolo, dicendo: "Perché hai scritto in esso che il re di Babilonia verrà certamente e distruggerà questo paese e farà scomparire da esso uomini e bestie?"

30 S o this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He will have no one to sit on the throne of David. And his dead body will be thrown out to the heat of the day and the cold of the night.

Perciò cosí dice l'Eterno riguardo a Jehoiakim re di Giuda: Egli non avrà alcuno che sieda sul trono di Davide, e il suo cadavere sarà gettato fuori ed esposto al calore del giorno e al gelo della notte.

31 I will punish him and his children and his servants for their sin. And I will bring on them and the people of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the trouble that I have said would come to them, because they would not listen.”’”

Io punirò lui, la sua discendenza e i suoi servi per la loro iniquità e farò venire su di loro, sugli abitanti di Gerusalemme e sugli uomini di Giuda tutto il male che ho pronunciato contro di loro, perché non hanno ascoltato».

32 T hen Jeremiah took another book and gave it to Baruch the son of Neraiah, the writer. And as Jeremiah told them to him, he wrote down all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many words of the same kind were added to them.

Geremia quindi prese un altro rotolo e lo diede a Baruk, figlio di Neriah, lo scriba, il quale scrisse su di esso, sotto dettatura di Geremia, tutte le parole del libro che Jehoiakim, re di Giuda, aveva bruciato nel fuoco; vi furono inoltre aggiunte molte altre parole simili a quelle.
