1 S o I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

Mi sono quindi messo a considerare tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole, ed ecco, le lacrime degli oppressi, i quali non hanno chi li consoli; dal lato dei loro oppressori c'era la forza, ma neppure essi hanno chi li consoli.

2 W herefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

Per cui ho ritenuto i morti, che sono già morti, piú felici dei vivi che sono ancora in vita;

3 Y ea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

ma ancor piú felice degli uni e degli altri, colui che non è mai esistito e non ha ancora visto le azioni malvagie che si commettono sotto il sole.

4 A gain, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ho pure visto che ogni fatica e ogni successo nel lavoro risultano in invidia dell'uno contro l'altro. Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.

5 T he fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

Lo stolto incrocia le braccia e divora la propria carne.

6 B etter is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

Val piú una manciata con riposo che due manciate con fatica, cercando di afferrare il vento.

7 T hen I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

Ho visto anche un'altra vanità sotto il sole:

8 T here is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

uno è completamente solo e non ha né figlio né fratello, eppure la sua fatica non ha fine e i suoi occhi non sono sazi di ricchezze. Ma non si chiede: «Per chi mi affatico e mi privo di ogni bene?». Anche questo è vanità e una fatica penosa.

9 T wo are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

Due valgon meglio di uno solo, perché hanno una buona ricompensa per la loro fatica.

10 F or if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

Se infatti cadono, l'uno rialza l'altro; ma guai a chi è solo e cade, perché non ha nessun altro che lo rialzi!

11 A gain, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone ?

Cosí pure se due dormono assieme si possono riscaldare; ma uno solo come farà a riscaldarsi?

12 A nd if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Se uno può sopraffare chi è solo, due gli possono resistere; una corda a tre capi non si rompe tanto presto.

13 B etter is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

E' meglio un giovane povero e saggio che un re vecchio e stolto, che non sa piú ricevere ammonimenti.

14 F or out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

Poiché il giovane è uscito di prigione per regnare, anche se era nato povero nel suo regno.

15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

Ho visto tutti i viventi che camminano sotto il sole unirsi al giovane, che va a mettersi al posto dell'altro.

16 T here is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Era innumerevole tutto il popolo, tutti quelli che erano stati prima di loro. Tuttavia quelli che verranno dopo non saranno contenti di lui! Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.
