1 A nd it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

In quel tempo, quando non c'era re in Israele, un Levita, che dimorava nella parte più remota della regione montuosa di Efraim, si prese per concubina una donna di Betlemme di Giuda.

2 A nd his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.

Questa concubina commise adulterio contro di lui e lo lasciò per tornare a casa di suo padre a Betlemme di Giuda, dove rimase quattro mesi.

3 A nd her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

Suo marito allora si levò e andò da lei per parlare al suo cuore e riportarla a casa. Egli aveva preso con sé il suo servo e due asini. Così ella lo condusse in casa di suo padre; come il padre della giovane lo vide, lo accolse con gioia.

4 A nd his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

Suo suocero, il padre della giovane, lo trattenne, ed egli rimase con lui tre giorni; così mangiarono e bevvero e passarono la notte là.

5 A nd it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.

Il quarto giorno si levarono al mattino presto, e il Levita si disponeva a partire; ma il padre della giovane disse al suo genero: «Prendi un boccone di pane per ristorarti; poi ve ne andrete».

6 A nd they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.

Così si posero ambedue a sedere e mangiarono e bevvero assieme. Poi il padre della giovane disse al marito: «Ti prego, acconsenti a passare qui la notte, e il tuo cuore si rallegri».

7 A nd when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.

Quell'uomo si alzò per andarsene; ma il suocero insistette tanto che egli passò ancora la notte là.

8 A nd he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.

Il quinto giorno egli si alzò al mattino presto per andarsene; e il padre della giovane gli disse: «Ti prego, ristorati il cuore». Così si fermarono fino al pomeriggio, ed entrambi mangiarono.

9 A nd when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

Quando quell'uomo si alzò per andarsene con la sua concubina e col suo servo, il suocero, il padre della giovane, gli disse: «Ecco, il giorno volge a sera; ti prego, passa qui la notte; vedi, il giorno sta per finire; passa qui la notte e il tuo cuore si rallegri; domani vi metterete in cammino presto e andrai a casa».

10 B ut the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.

Ma quell'uomo non volle passare la notte là; così si alzò, partì e giunse di fronte a Jebus, che è Gerusalemme, con i suoi due asini sellati e con la sua concubina.

11 A nd when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

Quando furono vicini a Jebus, il giorno era completamente trascorso; il servo disse al suo padrone: «Vieni, ti prego, entriamo in questa città dei Gebusei e passiamo in essa la notte».

12 A nd his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.

Il padrone gli rispose: «No, non entreremo in una città di stranieri che non sono figli d'Israele, ma andremo fino a Ghibeah».

13 A nd he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

Disse quindi al suo servo: «Vieni, raggiungiamo uno di questi luoghi e passeremo la notte a Ghibeah o a Ramah».

14 A nd they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

Così passarono oltre e continuarono il viaggio; e il sole tramontò su di loro presso Ghibeah, che appartiene a Beniamino.

15 A nd they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.

Là si volsero per entrare e passare la notte a Ghibeah. Così il Levita entrò e si fermò sulla piazza della città; ma nessuno li accolse in casa per passare la notte.

16 A nd, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.

Proprio allora un vecchio rientrava di sera dal suo lavoro nei campi; egli era della regione montuosa di Efraim e risiedeva come forestiero in Ghibeah, ma la gente del luogo era Beniaminita.

17 A nd when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

Alzati gli occhi, vide il viandante sulla piazza della città. Il vecchio gli disse: «Dove vai e da dove vieni?».

18 A nd he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the Lord; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.

Il Levita gli rispose: «Stiamo andando da Betlemme di Giuda verso la parte piú remota della regione montuosa di Efraim, lo sono di là ed ero andato a Betlemme di Giuda; ora mi reco alla casa dell'Eterno, ma non c'è nessuno che mi riceva in casa sua.

19 Y et there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.

Eppure abbiamo paglia e foraggio per i nostri asini e anche pane e vino per me, per la tua serva e per il garzone che è con i tuoi servi; non ci manca nulla».

20 A nd the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

Il vecchio gli disse: «La pace sia con te! Tuttavia lascia che io mi prenda cura di ogni tuo bisogno; ma non devi passare la notte sulla piazza».

21 S o he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

Così lo condusse in casa sua e diede foraggio agli asini; i viandanti si lavarono i piedi, poi mangiarono e bevvero.

22 N ow as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

Mentre stavano rallegrandosi, ecco alcuni uomini della città, gente perversa, circondarono la casa, picchiando alla porta, e dissero al vecchio padrone di casa: «Fa' uscire quell'uomo che è entrato in casa tua, perché lo vogliamo conoscerò!».

23 A nd the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

Ma il padrone di casa, uscito fuori, disse loro: «No, fratelli miei, vi prego, non comportatevi in modo così malvagio; poiché quest'uomo è venuto in casa mia, non commettete una simile infamia!

24 B ehold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

Ecco qui mia figlia vergine e la concubina di quest'uomo; io ve le condurrò fuori, e voi umiliatele e fatene ciò che vi pare; ma non commettete contro quest'uomo una simile infamia!».

25 B ut the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

Ma quegli uomini non vollero dargli ascolto. Allora l'uomo prese la sua concubina e la condusse fuori da loro; essi la conobbero e abusarono di lei tutta la notte fino al mattino; la lasciarono andare solo quando cominciava ad albeggiare.

26 T hen came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.

Sul far del giorno quella donna venne a cadere alla porta di casa dell'uomo presso cui stava suo marito e là rimase finché fu giorno.

27 A nd her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.

Al mattino suo marito si levò, aperse la porta di casa e uscì per continuare il suo viaggio; ed ecco la sua concubina giaceva distesa alla porta di casa con le mani sulla soglia.

28 A nd he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

Egli le disse: «Alzati e andiamocene!». Ma non ci fu risposta. Allora il marito la caricò sull'asino e partì per tornare a casa sua.

29 A nd when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

Come giunse a casa, afferrò un coltello, prese la sua concubina e la tagliò, membro per membro, in dodici pezzi, che mandò per tutto il territorio d'Israele.

30 A nd it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

Or chiunque vide ciò disse: «Non è mai accaduta e non si è mai vista una cosa simile, da quando i figli d'Israele salirono dal paese d'Egitto fino al giorno d'oggi! Considerate la cosa; consigliatevi e parlate».
