1 B ut now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

«Ora invece i piú giovani di me mi deridono, quelli i cui padri avrei rifiutato di mettere fra i cani del mio gregge.

2 Y ea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?

Del resto, a che cosa mi sarebbe valsa la forza delle loro mani? Il loro vigore è distrutto.

3 F or want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.

Emaciati per la miseria e per la fame, fuggono di notte nel deserto desolato e arido.

4 W ho cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.

strappando erba amara accanto ai cespugli e radici di ginestra per loro cibo.

5 T hey were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)

Sono scacciati di mezzo agli uomini che gridano dietro a loro come a ladri.

6 t o dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.

Sono costretti a vivere nei dirupi delle valli, nelle caverne della terra e fra le rocce;

7 A mong the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.

urlano fra i cespugli e si stringono insieme sotto i rovi;

8 T hey were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.

gente stupida, sí, gente spregevole, cacciati via dal paese.

9 A nd now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.

Ora sono diventato il loro canto di scherno, sí, sono il loro zimbello.

10 T hey abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.

Hanno orrore di me, stanno lontano da me e non esitano a sputarmi in faccia.

11 B ecause he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.

Poiché Dio ha allentato la corda della mia tenda e mi ha umiliato, essi hanno rotto ogni freno davanti a me.

12 U pon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.

Questa gentaglia si leva alla mia destra, spingono lontano i miei piedi e preparano contro di me le vie per distruggermi.

13 T hey mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.

Sovvertono il mio cammino, peggiorano la mia sventura, anche se nessuno li soccorre.

14 T hey came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.

Si avvicinano come attraverso un'ampia breccia, si lanciano su di me come un uragano.

15 T errors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.

Mi piombano addosso terrori, danno la caccia al mio onore come il vento, e la mia prosperità si dilegua come una nube.

16 A nd now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

Ora mi struggo dentro di me, e i giorni di afflizione mi sono venuti addosso,

17 M y bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.

Di notte mi sento trafiggere le ossa, e i dolori che mi rodono non mi danno tregua.

18 B y the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.

Per la grande violenza la mia veste si deforma, mi stringe attorno come il colletto del mio mantello.

19 H e hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

Egli mi ha gettato nel fango e sono diventato come polvere e cenere.

20 I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.

Io grido a te, e tu non mi rispondi; ti sto davanti, ma tu mi stai ad osservare.

21 T hou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.

Sei divenuto crudele verso di me; mi perseguiti con la potenza della tua mano.

22 T hou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.

Mi sollevi in alto sul vento, mi fai cavalcare su di esso e mi fai scomparire nella tempesta.

23 F or I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

So infatti che tu mi conduci alla morte, alla casa di convegno di tutti i viventi.

24 H owbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.

Certamente non stenderà la sua mano alla tomba, anche se nella sua sventura grida in cerca di aiuto.

25 D id not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?

Non ho forse io pianto per chi era nell'avversità, e non mi sono addolorato per il povero?

26 W hen I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

Quando aspettavo il bene, è venuto il male; quando aspettavo la luce, è venuta l'oscurità.

27 M y bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.

Le mie viscere ribollono senza tregua, sono venuti per me giorni d'afflizione.

28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

Vado attorno tutto annerito, ma non dal sole; mi alzo nell'assemblea e grido in cerca di aiuto.

29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.

Sono diventato fratello degli sciacalli e compagno degli struzzi.

30 M y skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.

La mia pelle si è annerita su di me e le mie ossa bruciano dal calore.

31 M y harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.

La mia cetra serve solo per lamenti e il mio flauto per voci di pianto»
