1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

La risposta dolce calma la collera, ma la parola pungente eccita l'ira.

2 T he tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

La lingua dei saggi usa la conoscenza rettamente, ma la bocca degli stolti riversa follia.

3 T he eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Gli occhi dell'Eterno sono in ogni luogo, per guardare i cattivi e i buoni.

4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

Una lingua sana è un albero di vita, ma la lingua perversa strazia lo spirito.

5 A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Lo stolto disprezza la correzione di suo padre, ma chi apprezza la riprensione agisce con accortezza.

6 I n the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

Nella casa del giusto c'è grande abbondanza, ma nella rendita dell'empio ci sono guai.

7 T he lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.

Le labbra dei saggi spargono conoscenza, ma non cosí il cuore degli stolti.

8 T he sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Il sacrificio degli empi è un abominio all'Eterno, ma la preghiera degli uomini retti gli è gradita.

9 T he way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

La via dell'empio è un abominio all'Eterno, ma egli ama chi segue la giustizia.

10 C orrection is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Una dura correzione attende chi lascia la diritta via; chi odia la riprensione morirà.

11 H ell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

Lo Sceol e Abaddon sono davanti all'Eterno; tanto piú lo sono i cuori dei figli degli uomini!

12 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

Lo schernitore non ama chi lo riprende; egli non va dai saggi.

13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Un cuore gioioso rende il viso raggiante, ma per l'afflizione del cuore lo spirito è abbattuto,

14 T he heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

Il cuore di chi ha intendimento cerca la conoscenza, ma la bocca degli stolti si pasce di follia.

15 A ll the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

Tutti i giorni dell'indigente sono cattivi, ma per un cuore contento è sempre festa.

16 B etter is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Meglio poco con il timore dell'Eterno, che un gran tesoro con preoccupazioni.

17 B etter is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

Meglio un piatto di verdura dove c'è amore, che un bue ingrassato dove c'è odio.

18 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

L'uomo irascibile fomenta contese, ma chi è lento all'ira acqueta le liti.

19 T he way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.

La via del pigro è come una siepe di spine, ma il sentiero degli uomini retti è reso piano.

20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Il figlio saggio allieta il padre, ma l'uomo stolto disprezza sua madre.

21 F olly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

La follia è gioia per chi è privo di senno, ma l'uomo che ha intendimento cammina diritto.

22 W ithout counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

I disegni falliscono dove non c'è consiglio, ma riescono dove c'è una moltitudine di consiglieri.

23 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

Uno prova gioia quando può dare una risposta, e quanto è buona una parola detta al tempo giusto!

24 T he way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

Per l'uomo prudente la via della vita conduce in alto, per fargli evitare lo Sceol in basso.

25 T he Lord will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.

L'Eterno distruggerà la casa dei superbi, ma renderà stabili i confini della vedova.

26 T he thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

I pensieri malvagi sono un abominio all'Eterno, ma le parole affabili sono pure.

27 H e that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

Chi è avido di guadagno mette nei guai la sua stessa casa, ma chi odia i regali vivrà.

28 T he heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Il cuore del giusto medita come deve rispondere, ma la bocca degli empi vomita cose malvagie.

29 T he Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

L'Eterno è lontano dagli empi, ma ascolta la preghiera dei giusti.

30 T he light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.

La luminosità degli occhi rallegra il cuore, una buona notizia irrobustisce le ossa.

31 T he ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

L'orecchio che ascolta la riprensione di vita, dimorerà fra i saggi.

32 H e that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Chi rifiuta la correzione disprezza la sua stessa anima, ma chi dà ascolto alla riprensione acquista senno.

33 T he fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Il timore dell'Eterno è un ammaestramento di sapienza, e prima della gloria c'è l'umiltà.
