1 A nd it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

Or avvenne ai giorni di Achaz figlio di Jotham, figlio di Uzziah, re di Giuda, che Retsin re di Siria, e Pekah figlio di Remaliah, re d'Israele, salirono contro Gerusalemme per muoverle guerra, ma non riuscirono ad espugnarla.

2 A nd it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.

Fu perciò riferito alla casa di Davide, dicendo: «I Siri si sono accampati in Efraim». Cosí il cuore di Achaz e il cuore del suo popolo tremarono, come tremano gli alberi della foresta per il vento.

3 T hen said the Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;

Allora l'Eterno disse a Isaia: «Va' incontro ad Achaz, tu e tuo figlio Scear-Jashub, all'estremità del canale della piscina superiore sulla strada del campo del lavandaio,

4 a nd say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

e digli: Guarda di star tranquillo, non aver paura e il tuo cuore non venga meno a motivo di questi due mozziconi di tizzoni fumanti, per l'ira ardente di Retsin e della Siria, e del figlio di Remaliah.

5 B ecause Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,

Poiché la Siria, Efraim e il figlio di Remaliah hanno ideato del male contro di te, dicendo:

6 L et us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:

Saliamo contro Giuda, terrorizziamolo, apriamoci una breccia nelle sue mura e stabiliamo come re nel suo mezzo il figlio di Tabeel"».

7 t hus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

Cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Questo non avverrà, non succederà,

8 F or the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.

perché la capitale della Siria è Damasco e il capo di Damasco è Retsin. Fra sessantacinque anni Efraim sarà fatto a pezzi e non sarà piú popolo.

9 A nd the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.

La capitale di Efraim è Samaria, e il capo di Samaria è il figlio di Remaliah. Se non credete, certamente non sarete resi stabili».

10 M oreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying,

L'Eterno parlò di nuovo ad Achaz gli disse:

11 A sk thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

«Chiedi per te un segno all'Eterno, il tuo DIO; chiedilo o nelle profondità o nelle altezze».

12 B ut Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.

Ma Achaz rispose: «Io non chiederò nulla, non voglio tentare l'Eterno».

13 A nd he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

Allora Isaia disse: «Ascoltate ora, o casa di Davide! E forse poca cosa per voi lo stancare gli uomini, che volete stancare anche il mio DIO?

14 T herefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Perciò il Signore stesso vi darà un segno: Ecco, la vergine concepirà e darà alla luce un figlio e gli porrà nome Emmanuele

15 B utter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Egli mangerà panna e miele fino a quando sappia rigettare il male e scegliere il bene.

16 F or before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

Ma prima che il fanciullo sappia rigettare il male e scegliere il bene, il paese che temi a motivo dei suoi due re sarà abbandonato.

17 T he Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.

L'Eterno farà venire il re di Assiria su di te, sul tuo popolo e sulla casa di tuo padre dei giorni quali non vennero da quando Efraim si separò da Giuda.

18 A nd it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

In quel giorno avverrà che l'Eterno fischierà alle mosche che sono all'estremità dei fiumi d'Egitto, e alle api che sono nel paese di Assiria.

19 A nd they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.

Esse verranno e si poseranno tutte nelle valli desolate, nelle fenditure delle rocce, su tutti i cespugli spinosi e su tutti i pascoli.

20 I n the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.

In quel giorno il Signore con un rasoio preso a nolo oltre il Fiume, cioè con il re di Assiria, raderà la testa e i peli delle gambe, e raschierà via anche la barba.

21 A nd it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;

In quel giorno avverrà che uno manterrà una giovane vacca e due pecore,

22 a nd it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

e per l'abbondanza del latte che daranno, egli mangerà panna, perché panna e miele mangeranno tutti i superstiti lasciati in mezzo al paese.

23 A nd it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.

In quel giorno ogni luogo dove ci potevano essere mille viti del valore di mille sicli d'argento, diventerà preda dei rovi e dei pruni.

24 W ith arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

Vi si entrerà con frecce e arco, perché tutto il paese sarà rovi e pruni.

25 A nd on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.

E su tutti i colli che erano dissodati con la zappa non si passerà piú per paura dei rovi e dei pruni; saranno un luogo dove si manderanno i buoi e che sarà calpestato dalle pecore».
