1 B ut Job answered and said,

Allora Giobbe rispose e disse:

2 H ear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

«Ascoltate attentamente ciò che dico, e sia questo il conforto che mi date.

3 S uffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

Abbiate pazienza con me e lasciatemi parlare e, quando avrò parlato, deridetemi pure.

4 A s for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

Mi lamento forse di un uomo? E perché il mio spirito non dovrebbe rattristarsi?

5 M ark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

Guardatemi e stupite, e mettetevi la mano sulla bocca.

6 E ven when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

Quando ci penso, ne sono spaventato e la mia carne è presa da un tremito.

7 W herefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

Perché mai vivono gli empi, e perchè invecchiano ed accrescono le loro ricchezze?

8 T heir seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

La loro discendenza si afferma insieme ad essi sotto i loro sguardi e i loro rampolli fioriscono sotto i loro occhi.

9 T heir houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

Le loro case sono al sicuro, senza spaventi, e la verga di Dio non grava su di loro.

10 T heir bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

Il loro toro feconda e non falla, la loro vacca figlia senza abortire.

11 T hey send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

Mandano fuori come un gregge i loro piccoli, e i loro figli saltano.

12 T hey take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

Cantano al suono di timpano e di cetra e si rallegrano al suono del flauto.

13 T hey spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

Trascorrono nel benessere i loro giorni, poi in un momento scendono nello Sceol.

14 T herefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

Eppure dicevano a Dio: "Allontanati da noi, perché non desideriamo affatto conoscere le tue vie.

15 W hat is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

Chi è l'Onnipotente perché dobbiamo servirlo? Che ci giova inoltre pregarlo?

16 L o, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Ecco, la loro prosperità non sta forse nelle loro mani? Il consiglio degli empi è ben lontano da me.

17 H ow oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

Quante volte si spegne la lampada dei malvagi o la distruzione si abbatte su di loro, le sofferenze che Dio assegna nella sua ira?

18 T hey are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

Sono essi come paglia davanti al vento o come pula portata via dall'uragano?

19 G od layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

Voi dite che Dio conserva la punizione dell'iniquità di uno per i suoi figli. Lo ripaghi Dio, perché egli possa capire.

20 H is eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

Veda con i suoi occhi la sua distruzione e beva dell'ira dell'Onnipotente!

21 F or what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

Che cosa gl'importa infatti della sua casa dopo la morte, quando il numero dei suoi mesi è compiuto?

22 S hall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

Può qualcuno insegnare a Dio conoscenza, a lui che giudica quelli di lassú?

23 O ne dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

Uno muore nel suo pieno vigore, tutto tranquillo e sicuro

24 H is breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

ha i secchi pieni di latte e il midollo delle sue ossa è fresco.

25 A nd another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

Un altro invece muore con l'anima amareggiata, senza aver mai gustato il bene.

26 T hey shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

Ambedue giacciono insieme nella polvere e i vermi li ricoprono.

27 B ehold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

Ecco, io conosco i vostri pensieri e i piani con i quali mi vorreste fare violenza

28 F or ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

Infatti voi dite: "Dov'è la casa del principe, e dov'è la tenda, la dimora dei malvagi?

29 H ave ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,

Non avete interrogato quelli che viaggiano e non riconoscete i loro segni?

30 t hat the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

I malvagi infatti sono risparmiati nel giorno della distruzione e sono portati in salvo nel giorno dell'ira.

31 W ho shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

Chi gli rinfaccia la sua condotta e chi lo ripaga per ciò che ha fatto?

32 Y et shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

Egli è portato alla sepoltura e si farà la guardia sulla sua tomba.

33 T he clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

Le zolle della valle gli saranno dolci, tutta la gente lo seguirà, mentre una folla immensa lo precede.

34 H ow then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

Come potete dunque consolarmi con parole vane, dato che dalle vostre parole non rimane che falsità?».
