1 N ow there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

2 a nd he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

3 A nd this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.

Ogni anno quest'uomo saliva dalla sua città per adorare ed offrire sacrifici all'Eterno degli eserciti a Sciloh, dove erano i due figli di Eli, Hofni e Finehas, sacerdoti dell'Eterno.

4 A nd when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

Quando per Elkanah veniva il giorno di offrire il sacrificio, egli soleva dare a sua moglie Peninna e a tutti i suoi figli e figlie le loro parti;

5 b ut unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb.

ma ad Anna dava una parte doppia, perché amava Anna, benché l'Eterno avesse chiuso il suo grembo.

6 A nd her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb.

Or la sua rivale la molestava continuamente per farla irritare, perché l'Eterno aveva chiuso il suo grembo.

7 A nd as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

Così succedeva ogni anno; tutte le volte che Anna saliva alla casa dell'Eterno, Peninna la molestava; per cui ella piangeva e non prendeva più cibo.

8 T hen said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

Allora suo marito Elkanah le disse: «Anna, perché piangi? Perché non mangi? Perché è triste il tuo cuore? Non sono io per te meglio di dieci figli?».

9 S o Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the Lord.

Dopo che ebbero mangiato e bevuto a Sciloh, Anna si levò. Or il sacerdote Eli stava seduto sul sedile all'entrata del tabernacolo dell'Eterno.

10 A nd she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.

Nell'amarezza della sua anima pregava l'Eterno piangendo dirottamente.

11 A nd she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

Poi fece un voto, dicendo: «O Eterno degli eserciti, se veramente riguardi all'afflizione della tua serva, ti ricordi di me e non dimentichi la tua serva, ma vuoi dare alla tua serva un figlio maschio, io lo darò all'Eterno per tutti i giorni della sua vita, e il rasoio non passerà sulla sua testa»

12 A nd it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth.

Mentre essa prolungava la sua preghiera davanti all'Eterno, Eli stava osservando la sua bocca.

13 N ow Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

Anna parlava in cuor suo, soltanto le sue labbra si muovevano, ma la sua voce non si udiva; per questo Eli pensava che fosse ubriaca.

14 A nd Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

Così Eli le disse: «Fino a quando sarai ubriaca? Smaltisci il tuo vino!».

15 A nd Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.

Ma Anna rispose e disse: «No signor mio, io sono una donna afflitta nello spirito e non ho bevuto né vino né bevanda inebriante, ma stavo effondendo la mia anima davanti all'Eterno.

16 C ount not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

Non considerare la tua serva una donna perversa, perché è l'accesso del mio dolore e della mia afflizione che mi ha fatto parlare finora»

17 T hen Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

Allora Eli le rispose: «Va' in pace, e il DIO d'Israele ti conceda ciò che gli hai richiesto».

18 A nd she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

Ella rispose: «Possa la tua serva trovare grazia ai tuoi occhi». Così la donna se ne andò per la sua via, prese cibo e il suo aspetto non fu più triste.

19 A nd they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her.

Essi si alzarono al mattino presto e si prostrarono davanti all'Eterno; poi partirono e ritornarono a casa loro a Ramah. Elkanah conobbe Anna, sua moglie, e l'Eterno si ricordò di lei.

20 W herefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.

A suo tempo, Anna concepì e partorì un figlio, a cui pose nome Samuele, dicendo: «Perché l'ho chiesto all'Eterno».

21 A nd the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

Allora il marito Elkanah salì con tutta la sua famiglia per offrire all'Eterno il sacrificio annuale e per adempiere il suo voto.

22 B ut Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever.

Ma Anna non salì perché disse a suo marito: «Io non salirò finché il bambino non sia divezzato; allora lo condurrò, perché sia presentato davanti all'Eterno e vi rimanga per sempre».

23 A nd Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the Lord establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

Suo marito Elkanah le rispose: «Fa' come meglio ti sembra; rimani finché tu l'abbia divezzato, purché l'Eterno adempia la sua parola!». Così la donna rimase a casa e allattò suo figlio finché non l'ebbe divezzato.

24 A nd when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh: and the child was young.

Dopo averlo divezzato, lo condusse con sé, assieme a tre torelli, un'efa di farina e un otre di vino; e lo condusse nella casa dell'Eterno a Sciloh. Il fanciullo era ancora giovane.

25 A nd they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

Quindi loro immolarono un torello e condussero il fanciullo ad Eli.

26 A nd she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord.

Anna gli disse: «Signor mio! Com'è vero che vive l'anima tua, o mio signore, io sono quella donna che stava qui vicino a te a pregare l'Eterno.

27 F or this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

Ho pregato per avere questo fanciullo, e l'Eterno mi ha concesso ciò che gli ho chiesto.

28 t herefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.

Perciò a mia volta lo dono all'Eterno; finché egli vive sarà ceduto all'Eterno». E là si prostrarono davanti all'Eterno.
