L'uomo invece muore e rimane atterrato; quando egli esala l'ultimo respiro, dov'è mai?

11 A s the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

Possono venir meno le acque nel mare e un fiume prosciugarsi e seccare.

12 s o man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

ma l'uomo che giace non si rialza piú; finché non vi siano piú cieli, non si risveglierà né piú si desterà dal suo sonno.

13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Oh, volessi tu nascondermi nello Sceol, occultarmi finché la tua ira sia passata, fissarmi un termine e ricordarti di me!

14 I f a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Se l'uomo muore può ancora tornare in vita? Aspetterei tutti i giorni del mio duro servizio, finché giungesse l'ora del mio cambiamento.

15 T hou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

19 T he waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

come le acque corrodono le pietre e come le alluvioni portano via il suolo della terra, cosí tu distruggi la speranza dell'uomo.

20 T hou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

Tu lo sopraffai per sempre, ed egli se ne va; tu sfiguri il suo volto e lo cacci via.

21 H is sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

Se i suoi figli sono onorati, egli non lo sa; se sono disprezzati, egli non lo nota.

22 B ut his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

Egli sente solamente il grande dolore della sua carne e si affligge per se stesso».
