1 « L'uomo nato da donna vive pochi giorni ed è pieno di inquietudini.

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

2 S punta come un fiore poi è reciso; fugge come un'ombra e non dura.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 S opra un tale essere tu tieni gli occhi aperti, e mi fai comparire in giudizio con te.

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 C hi può trarre una cosa pura da una impura? Nessuno.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 P oiché i suoi giorni sono fissati, il numero dei suoi mesi dipende da te, e tu gli hai posto dei limiti che non può oltrepassare;

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 d istogli da lui lo sguardo e lascialo stare, finché abbia terminato la sua giornata come un bracciante,

turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7 A lmeno per l'albero c'è speranza; se è tagliato, cresce nuovamente e continua a mettere germoglio.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 A nche se la sua radice invecchia sotto terra e il suo tronco muore nel suolo

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 a l sentore dell'acqua germoglia nuovamente e mette rami come una pianta.

yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10 L 'uomo invece muore e rimane atterrato; quando egli esala l'ultimo respiro, dov'è mai?

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 P ossono venir meno le acque nel mare e un fiume prosciugarsi e seccare.

As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 m a l'uomo che giace non si rialza piú; finché non vi siano piú cieli, non si risveglierà né piú si desterà dal suo sonno.

so man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 O h, volessi tu nascondermi nello Sceol, occultarmi finché la tua ira sia passata, fissarmi un termine e ricordarti di me!

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 S e l'uomo muore può ancora tornare in vita? Aspetterei tutti i giorni del mio duro servizio, finché giungesse l'ora del mio cambiamento.

If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15 M i chiameresti e io risponderei; tu avresti un grande desiderio per l'opera delle tue mani.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16 A llora tu conteresti i miei passi ma non osserveresti i miei peccati;

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 s igilleresti il mio peccato in un sacco e copriresti la mia colpa.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18 M a come una montagna cade e si sgretola e come una rupe è rimossa dal suo posto;

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19 c ome le acque corrodono le pietre e come le alluvioni portano via il suolo della terra, cosí tu distruggi la speranza dell'uomo.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 T u lo sopraffai per sempre, ed egli se ne va; tu sfiguri il suo volto e lo cacci via.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 S e i suoi figli sono onorati, egli non lo sa; se sono disprezzati, egli non lo nota.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 E gli sente solamente il grande dolore della sua carne e si affligge per se stesso».

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
