1 E in uno di quei giorni avvenne che, mentre egli istruiva il popolo nel tempio e predicava l'evangelo, sopraggiunsero i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi, con gli anziani,

And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

2 e gli dissero: «Dicci con quale autorità fai queste cose; o, chi è colui che ti ha dato questa autorità?».

and spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

3 E d egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Anch'io vi domanderò una cosa, e voi rispondetemi.

And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

4 I l battesimo di Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini?».

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

5 E d essi ragionavano fra loro, dicendo: «Se diciamo dal cielo, egli ci dirà: "Perché dunque non gli avete creduto?".

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

6 S e invece diciamo dagli uomini, tutto il popolo ci lapiderà perché è convinto che Giovanni era un profeta».

But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

7 R isposero dunque che non sapevano da dove venisse.

And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

8 A llora Gesú disse loro: «Neppure io vi dirò con quale autorità faccio queste cose».

And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

9 P oi cominciò a raccontare al popolo questa parabola: «Un uomo piantò una vigna, l'affidò a certi vignaioli e se ne andò lontano per lungo tempo.

Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

10 A l tempo del raccolto, mandò un servo da quei vignaioli perché gli dessero la sua parte del frutto della vigna; ma i vignaioli, battutolo, lo rimandarono a mani vuote.

And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

11 E gli mandò di nuovo un altro servo ma essi, dopo aver battuto e insultato anche questo, lo rimandarono a mani vuote.

And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

12 E gli ne mandò ancora un terzo, ma essi ferirono anche questo e lo cacciarono.

And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

13 A llora il padrone della vigna disse: "Che devo fare? Manderò il mio amato figlio. Forse, vedendo lui, lo rispetteranno!".

Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

14 M a i vignaioli, quando lo videro, dissero tra di loro: "Costui è l'erede; venite, uccidiamolo affinché l'eredità diventi nostra".

But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

15 C osí cacciatolo fuori dalla vigna, lo uccisero. Che farà dunque a costoro il padrone della vigna?

So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

16 E gli verrà, sterminerà quei vignaioli, e darà la vigna ad altri». Ma essi, udito ciò, dissero: «Cosí non sia».

He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

17 A llora egli, guardandoli in faccia, disse: «Che cosa è dunque ciò che sta scritto: "La pietra che gli edificatori hanno rigettata è diventata la testata d'angolo"?

And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

18 C hiunque cadrà su questo sasso si sfracellerà, e colui sul quale esso cadrà sarà stritolato».

Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19 I n quello stesso momento, i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi, cercarono di mettergli le mani addosso, perché avevano compreso che aveva raccontato quella parabola per loro, ma temettero il popolo.

And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

20 E ssi lo osservavano attentamente e gli mandarono degli istigatori che, fingendosi giusti, lo sorprendessero in fallo in un suo discorso, per poi consegnarlo al potere e all'autorità del governatore.

And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

21 C ostoro lo interrogarono, dicendo: «Maestro, noi sappiamo che tu parli e insegni rettamente e che non usi alcuna parzialità ma insegni la via di Dio in verità.

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

22 C i è lecito pagare il tributo a Cesare o no?».

is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no?

23 M a egli, accortosi della loro malizia, disse loro: «Perché mi tentate?

But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

24 M ostratemi un denaro: di chi è l'immagine e l'iscrizione che porta?». Ed essi, rispondendo, dissero: «Di Cesare».

Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cæsar’s.

25 A llora egli disse loro: «Rendete dunque a Cesare ciò che è di Cesare, e a Dio ciò che è di Dio».

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which be Cæsar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.

26 E cosí non poterono coglierlo in fallo nel suo discorso davanti al popolo e, meravigliati della sua risposta, tacquero.

And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

27 O r gli si accostarono alcuni sadducei, i quali negano che vi sia la risurrezione, e lo interrogarono,

Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

28 d icendo: «Maestro, Mosé ci ha scritto che se il fratello di qualcuno muore avendo moglie e muore senza figli, il suo fratello prenda la moglie e susciti una discendenza a suo fratello.

saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

29 O r vi furono sette fratelli; il primo prese moglie e morí senza lasciare figli.

There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

30 I l secondo la prese come moglie, e morí anch'egli senza lasciare figli.

And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

31 L a prese poi il terzo; e cosí tutti e sette morirono senza lasciare figli.

And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

32 D opo tutti, morí anche la donna.

Last of all the woman died also.

33 N ella risurrezione, dunque, di chi sarà moglie? Poiché tutti e sette l'hanno avuta per moglie».

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

34 E Gesú, rispondendo, disse loro: «I figli di questa età si sposano e si maritano

And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35 m a coloro che sono ritenuti degni di ottenere l'altra età e la risurrezione dei morti, non si sposano né si maritano;

but they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36 e ssi infatti non possono piú morire, perché sono come gli angeli e sono figli di Dio, essendo figli della risurrezione.

neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

37 E che i morti risuscitino, lo ha dichiarato Mosé stesso nel passo del roveto, quando chiama Signore, il Dio di Abrahamo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe.

Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 O r egli non è il Dio dei morti ma dei viventi, poiché tutti vivono per lui».

For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

39 A llora alcuni degli scribi presero la parola e dissero: «Maestro, hai detto bene».

Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

40 E non ardirono piú fargli alcuna domanda.

And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

41 E d egli disse loro: «Come mai dicono che il Cristo è Figlio di Davide?

And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?

42 N el libro dei Salmi Davide stesso dice: "Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra,

And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43 f inché io abbia posto i tuoi nemici come sgabello dei tuoi piedi".

till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

44 D avide dunque lo chiama Signore come può essere suo figlio?».

David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

45 O ra, mentre tutto il popolo stava ascoltando, egli disse ai suoi discepoli:

Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

46 « Guardatevi dagli scribi, i quali passeggiano volentieri in lunghe vesti e amano i saluti nelle piazze, i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti nei conviti;

Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

47 e ssi divorano le case delle vedove e fanno lunghe preghiere per farsi vedere. Essi riceveranno una piú dura condanna».

which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
