1 S ul mio letto durante la notte, ho cercato colui che il mio cuore ama; ho cercato, ma non l'ho trovato,

By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.

2 O ra mi alzerò e andrò attorno per la città; per le strade e per le piazze cercherò colui che il mio cuore ama. L'ho cercato, ma non l'ho trovato.

I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.

3 L e guardie che vanno attorno per la città mi hanno incontrata. Ho chiesto loro: «Avete visto colui che il mio cuore ama?».

The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?

4 L e avevo appena oltrepassate, quando trovai colui che il mio cuore ama. L'ho stretto saldamente e non intendo lasciarlo finché non l'avrò condotto in casa di mia madre e nella camera di colei che mi ha concepito.

It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.

5 V i scongiuro, o figlie di Gerusalemme, per le gazzelle e per le cerve dei campi, non destate e non svegliate l'amore mio finché cosí le piace.

I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

6 C hi è costei che sale dal deserto, come colonne di fumo, profumata di mirra e d'incenso, e d'ogni polvere aromatica dei mercanti?

Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?

7 E cco il letto di Salomone, intorno al quale stanno sessanta uomini valorosi, dei prodi d'Israele.

Behold his bed, which is Solomon’s; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.

8 T utti maneggiano la spada, sono esperti nella guerra; ognuno porta la sua spada al fianco per gli spaventi notturni.

They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.

9 I l re Salomone si è fatto una lettiga con legno del Libano.

King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.

10 H a fatto le sue colonne d'argento, la sua spalliera d'oro, il suo seggio di porpora; il suo interno è ricamato con amore dalle figlie di Gerusalemme.

He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.

11 U scite, figlie di Sion, mirate il re Salomone con la corona di cui l'ha incoronato sua madre, nel giorno delle sue nozze, nel giorno dell'allegrezza del suo cuore.

Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.
