1 « Ora dunque, Giobbe, ascolta ciò che ho da dire e porgi orecchio a tutte le mie parole!

Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

2 E cco, io apro la bocca e la mia lingua parla nella mia bocca.

Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

3 L e mie parole vengono da un cuore retto, le mie labbra proferiranno pura conoscenza.

My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

4 L o Spirito di Dio mi ha fatto e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi dà la vita,

The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

5 S e puoi, rispondimi; preparati pure a difendere le tue posizioni.

If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

6 E cco, io sono uguale a te davanti a Dio; anch'io sono stato formato dall'argilla.

Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

7 E cco, nessuna paura di me ti dovrebbe spaventare, e la mia mano non graverà su di te.

Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

8 T u però hai detto alle mie orecchie, e ho udito il suono delle tue parole, che dicevano:

Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

9 " Io sono puro, senza peccato, sono innocente, non c'è in me alcuna colpa.

I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

10 M a Dio trova contro di me motivi di ostilità e mi considera suo nemico.

Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,

11 p one i miei piedi nei ceppi e osserva tutti i miei passi".

he putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

12 E bbene, io ti dico che in questo non hai ragione, perché Dio è piú grande dell'uomo.

Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

13 P erché contendi con lui, dato che egli non rende conto di alcuno dei suoi atti?

Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

14 D io infatti parla in un modo o nell'altro, ma l'uomo non ci bada:

For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

15 i n un sogno, in una visione notturna, quando un sonno profondo cade sui mortali, quando stanno assopiti sui loro letti.

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

16 A llora egli apre le orecchie degli uomini e sigilla gli ammonimenti che dà loro.

then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,

17 p er distogliere l'uomo dalle sue azioni e tener l'uomo lontano dalla superbia.

that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

18 p er scampare la sua anima dalla fossa e impedire che la sua vita perisca per la spada.

He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

19 L 'uomo è pure ammonito con il dolore sul suo letto e con il tormento incessante nelle sue ossa.

He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

20 s í da aver nausea del pane e persino dei cibi più squisiti.

So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.

21 L a carne si consuma a vista d'occhio, mentre le sue ossa, che prima non si vedevano, spuntano fuori;

His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

22 c osí la sua anima si avvicina alla fossa e la sua vita a quelli che danno la morte.

Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.

23 M a se presso a lui vi è un angelo, un interprete, uno solo fra mille, che mostri all'uomo il suo dovere.

If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:

24 D io ha pietà di lui e dice: "risparmialo dallo scendere nella fossa; ho trovato il riscatto per lui"

then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

25 A llora la sua carne diventerà piú fresca che nella, sua fanciullezza ed egli tornerà ai giorni della sua giovinezza.

His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth:

26 S upplicherà Dio, troverà grazia presso di lui e potrà contemplare il suo volto con giubilo, perché Dio avrà ristabilito l'uomo nella sua giustizia.

he shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

27 R ivolgendosi alla gente dirà: "ho peccato e violato la giustizia, e non sono stato punito come meritavo.

He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

28 D io ha riscattato la mia anima, perché non scendesse nella fossa e la mia vita può vedere la luce".

he will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

29 E cco. Dio fa tutto questo due volte, tre volte con l'uomo.

Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,

30 p er scampare la sua anima dalla fossa e per illuminarlo con la luce della vita.

to bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 S ta' attento, Giobbe, ascoltami; sta in silenzio, e io parlerò.

Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.

32 S e hai qualcosa da dire, rispondimi, parla, perché vorrei poterti dar ragione.

If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 S e no, ascoltami; taci, e io ti insegnerò la sapienza».

If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.
