1 I n quel giorno si lesse alla presenza del popolo il libro di Mosè e vi si trovò scritto che l'Ammonita e i Moabita non dovrebbero mai entrare nell'assemblea di DIO,

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

2 p erché non erano venuti incontro ai figli d'Israele con pane e acqua e perchè avevano assoldato contro di loro Balaam, per maledirli; ma il nostro DIO cambiò la maledizione in benedizione.

because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

3 C ome ebbero udito la legge, essi separarono da Israele tutta le gente straniera che si era mescolata a loro.

Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

4 P rima di questo, il sacerdote Eliascib, che era preposto alle camere della casa del nostro DIO ed era imparentato con Tobiah,

And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:

5 a veva preparato per costui una grande camera, dove prima riponevano le offerte, l'incenso, gli utensili, la decima del grano, del vino e dell'olio, tutto ciò che spettava per legge ai Leviti, ai cantori, ai portinai, come pure le offerte raccolte per i sacerdoti.

and he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

6 M a durante tutto questo tempo io non ero a Gerusalemme, perché nell'anno trentaduesimo di Artaserse, re di Babilonia, ero tornato presso il re. Un po' di tempo dopo ottenni un congedo dal re

But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

7 e tornai a Gerusalemme; cosí mi resi conto del male che Eliascib aveva fatto per favorire Tobiah, preparando per lui una camera nei cortili della casa di DIO.

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

8 L a cosa mi dispiacque grandemente, e cosí feci gettare fuori dalla camera tutte le masserizie di casa appartenenti a Tobiah;

And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

9 p oi ordinai che si purificassero quelle camere e vi feci ricollocare gli utensili della casa di DIO, le offerte e l'incenso.

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

10 V enni anche a sapere che le porzioni dovute ai Leviti non erano state loro date e che i Leviti e i cantori, che prestavano servizio, erano fuggiti ciascuno alla sua terra.

And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

11 A llora rimproverai i magistrati e dissi loro: «Perché la casa di DIO è stata abbandonata?». Poi li radunai e li ristabilii nel loro ufficio.

Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12 T utto Giuda quindi portò nei magazzini le decime a del frumento, del mosto e dell'olio.

Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

13 A ffidai la sorveglianza dei magazzini al sacerdote Scelemiah, allo scriba, Tsadok e a Pedaiah, uno dei Leviti; come loro aiutante, scelsi Hanan, figlio di Zakkur, figlio di Mattaniah, perché costoro erano ritenuti uomini fedeli. A loro spettava il compito di fare le ripartizioni tra i loro fratelli.

And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

14 P er questo ricordati di me, o DIO mio, e non cancellare le buone opere che ho fatto per la casa del mio DIO e per la sua custodia.

Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

15 I n quei giorni osservai in Giuda alcuni che pigiavano l'uva in giorno di sabato e portavano sacchi di grano, caricandoli sugli asini, assieme a vino, uva, fichi e ogni sorta di fardelli che facevano venire a Gerusalemme, in giorno di sabato; e io li rimproverai a motivo del giorno in cui vendevano i generi alimentari.

In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

16 I noltre alcuni uomini di Tiro, che risiedevano a Gerusalemme, importavano pesce e ogni genere di mercanzie e le vendevano ai figli di Giuda in giorno di sabato e in Gerusalemme.

There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 A llora rimproverai i notabili di Giuda e dissi loro: «Che cos'è questo male che fate profanando il giorno di sabato?

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

18 N on fecero i nostri padri la stessa cosa? E non fece il nostro DIO cadere su di noi e su questa città tutta questa calamità? Ma voi fate venire maggior ira su Israele, profanando il sabato!».

Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 C osí, appena le porte di Gerusalemme cominciavano ad essere al buio, prima che il sabato cominciasse, io ordinai che le porte fossero chiuse e che non si riaprissero fin dopo il sabato; collocai pure alcuni dei miei servi alle porte, affinché nessun carico entrasse in città durante il sabato.

And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

20 M a i mercanti e i venditori di ogni genere di mercanzie passarono la notte fuori di Gerusalemme una o due volte.

So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

21 A llora io li rimproverai e dissi loro: «Perché passate la notte davanti alle mura? Se lo fate un'altra volta, metterò le mani su di voi». Da quel momento non vennero piú in giorno di sabato.

Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

22 O rdinai pure ai Leviti, che si purificassero e venissero a custodire le porte per santificare il giorno del sabato. Anche per questo ricordati di me, o mio DIO, e abbi pietà di me secondo la grandezza della tua misericordia!

And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

23 I n quei giorni vidi pure alcuni Giudei che avevano sposato donne di Ashdod, di Ammon e di Moab;

In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

24 l a metà dei loro figli parlava la lingua di Ashdod e non sapeva parlare la lingua giudaica, ma parlava soltanto la lingua di questo o di quel popolo.

and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

25 A llora io li rimproverai, li maledissi, ne picchiai alcuni, strappai loro i capelli, li feci quindi giurare nel nome di DIO che non avrebbero dato le loro figlie ai figli di costoro e non avrebbero preso le figlie di quelli per i loro figli né per se stessi.

And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

26 E dissi: «Non peccò forse Salomone, re d'Israele, per queste cose? Eppure fra tante nazioni, non ci fu re simile a lui; era amato dal suo DIO, e DIO l'aveva stabilito re su tutto Israele; ma le donne straniere fecero peccare anche lui.

Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

27 D ovremmo dunque udire di voi che commettete questo grande male, che peccate contro il nostro DIO, prendendo mogli straniere?».

Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

28 U no dei figli di Joiada, figlio di Eliscib, il sommo sacerdote, era genero di Sanballat, lo Horonita; io lo cacciai via da me.

And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

29 R icordati di loro, o mio DIO, perché hanno contaminato il sacerdozio e il patto del sacerdozio e dei Leviti!

Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 C osí io li purificai da ogni persona straniera e assegnai le mansioni ai sacerdoti e ai Leviti, ciascuno al suo compito.

Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

31 D iedi pure disposizioni circa l'offerta della legna ai tempi stabiliti e circa le primizie. Ricordati di me, o DIO mio, per farmi del bene!

and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
