1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

Then Job answered and said,

2 « Anche oggi il mio lamento è doloroso; la mia mano è fiacca a motivo del mio gemito.

Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

3 O h, sapessi dove trovarlo, per poter arrivare fino al suo trono!

Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!

4 E sporrei la mia causa davanti a lui, riempirei la mia bocca di argomenti.

I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

5 S aprei le parole con le quali mi risponderebbe, e capirei ciò che avrebbe da dirmi.

I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

6 C ontenderebbe egli con me con grande forza? No, invece mi presterebbe attenzione.

Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.

7 L à l'uomo retto potrebbe discutere con lui, cosí sarei assolto dal mio giudice per sempre.

There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

8 E cco, vado ad oriente, ma là non c'è; ad occidente, ma non lo scorgo;

Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

9 o pera a settentrione, ma non lo vedo; si volge a mezzogiorno, ma non riesco a vederlo.

on the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

10 M a egli conosce la strada che io prendo; se mi provasse, ne uscirei come l'oro.

But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

11 I l mio piede ha seguito fedelmente le sue orme, mi sono tenuto sulla sua via senza deviare;

My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

12 n on mi sono allontanato dai comandamenti delle sue labbra, ho fatto tesoro delle parole della sua bocca piú della mia porzione di cibo.

Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

13 M a egli non ha uguali, e chi mai può farlo cambiare? Ciò che egli vuole, lo fa;

But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

14 c osí egli compirà ciò che ha decretato nei miei confronti e di piani come questo ne ha molti altri.

For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.

15 P erciò alla sua presenza io sono atterrito; quando considero questo, ho paura di lui.

Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

16 D io fa venire meno il mio cuore, l'Onnipotente mi spaventa.

For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

17 P oiché non sono stato messo a tacere davanti alle tenebre; ed egli non ha nascosto la fitta oscurità alla mia faccia».

because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
